It is very discouraging especially since things were going very well from the surgery. It has been a year since my husband had total hip replacements and started 6 months after with severe thigh pain going down into his legs, one leg seems to be worse but still in both. I saw the suggestion of one person to put gel inserts into his work boots, which he has done and it has helped some, still not totally. He had been walking, playing disc golf, etc 3 months after surgery all pain free, on a regular basis, then had to come to a halt because of the pain. He has given his legs 3 months to try to let the swelling go down (assuming there must have been some) and now has started walking on the treadmill a little at a time to strengthen the muscles and stretch them. He says this has definitely helped and is encouraged. If this continues to work he will work on strengthening lateral muscles (once again). He believes it is more muscle related and maybe it is at the insertion point of the prosthesis put in.

I am not a doctor, but I find if I walk several times a day for 20 minutes, and sit less, that my hip, back and leg feel better. I had hip replacement surgery three months ago. However, if I stand a long time without moving, my groin area hurts a lot for several days and sometimes I even need to revert back to using a cane for a day or two. I am still getting to know this new leg.

Thigh pain after THR is common and can last for up to 4 years with in-growth (not using cement) components. The more "flexible" modern tapered implants have less incidence of thigh pain than those used in the past, but it still occurs.

The recalled Stryker implants can cause "metallosis" which can result in inflammation in the hip, but usually causes groin pain rather than thigh pain. Your doctor should consider ordering some blood tests, and to aspirate fluid from the hip to check for infection. The gross appearance of the fluid can give clues it there is metal staining. In some cases, an MRI is needed to try to identify if there is a mass caused by metal debris.  See the Stryker website for more info. The company will reimburse you for any tests that are needed in regards to a painful "Rejuvenate" hip.  Also of note is that previous versions of Stryker components coated with "Hydroxyapetite" were rumored to undergo "de-bonding" of the coating, which could cause thigh pain.  I have never seen this.

Also, lumbar spine arthritic issues can refer pain to the hip and surrounding areas. This should be considered as a possible pain-generator as well.  Good luck!

I am a 58 year old female who had a LTHR on January 30, 2012. The first few weeks were really rough.Although I did everything they said to do it just seemed to take me longer to heal. Although my hip moves better I have never been pain free. When I bend over and go back up the pain in my inner left thigh is very very sharp almost as if I am being stabbed. I also find now my hip is beginning to get very stiff again and my left foot seems to be having trouble totally picking it up when I am walking. My Ortho surgeon says the pain is coming from a spur on my lower back? The problem is the pain feels very similar to before the THR.

I don't expect any answers it just feels great to express my concerns here without burdening my husband with it. I think that is the worst part, he wants to help but there is little he can do.

My thigh pain has crippled me and now I can barely walk even w/ a cane. My hip implant was made with reverse barbs, coated with a substance "poracoat" and actually driven into my leg. Does anyone recognize the manufacturer of this hip joint? John

If you're taking cholesterol meds that could be the problem or another type of med. My husband was the same thing and ran out of cholesterole meds and didn't take any for 3 weeks, he is like a new man! A friend of his who is a trainer told him this is very true, he has seen this in quite a few of his patients. Talk to your doc!

I am now in my fourth month of hip replacement surgery and the pain I mentioned last month is now non-existent. I contribute my healing to walking frequently and climbing stairs. Also, I concentrate on my steps, planting my heel and rolling my foot to the toes, a rolling step, rather than just planting my foot. I encourage you to concentrate on heel-to-toe stepping with each foot. Good luck!!
