Hi,
I’ve been having recurring ear infections for last six months and I’ve probably been on every antibiotic there is for treating ear infections. Augmentin and Zithromax are the two I was prescribed most often - both of them do clear up my infection, but then it just comes back again in a few weeks.
I’m currently on Augmentin again and the infection isn’t letting up as usual, so I’m wondering is Zithromax perhaps more effective than Augmentin? What is the difference between these two medications?
Hi Guest,
Both are antibiotics but how they work is different.
It is also possible that the bacteria causing the ear infection are becoming adapted to the Augmentin. In effect, it isn't working as well and you'd need a stronger dose.
It also depends on the bacteria. Some respond better to one antibiotic or another.
The real problem is that you aren't being cured. Your doctor needs to solve this problem with the recurring infections. If the bacteria aren't killed completely they will become tolerant to any antibiotic and the problem will worsen. Soon, augmentin and zythromax may NOT work at all for you.
Make sure you take all of the prescribed antibiotics even if you feel better. You must complete the full course of treatment.
Hello medic-dan, thanks for your reply. After the first time I got ear infection, took the antibiotic and only have it come back just three weeks later, I made sure I do always finish the full course of antibiotics and even make sure I'm careful to take them at the same time, as medication leaflet suggests. But, I'm suspecting pretty much the same thing you said - I think that whatever bacteria is that's causing my ear infections, it has become immune to both Augmentin or Zithromax and that I need a different antibiotic for my ear infections.
