Same thing happened to me with the use of Crest Pro Health. It probably occurs with other whitening pastes. My question is: Is it bad or good? Is it removing a beneficial layer or a potentially pathogenic layer?

I had the same problem for years until the rheumatologists discovered I had Sjøgrens Syndrome with dry mouth and dry eyes, swullen lymphs. I asked them about the white slime threads in my mouth and they said decreased saliva changes the protein content so this could be the reason.

I do! I have also wondered about this and became a little concerned.

I am having this trouble with my mom now. She is complaining of strings and "staples", "stickers", etc. in her mouth. She is constantly pulling at her mouth or rubbing her tongue to get the strings out. Did you ever find anything that helped your mother? I am overwhelmed trying to find help for her. Please let me know if you found out what it was. Thank you. Jennifer

I started using an oral B whitening toothpaste and since then have had that awful stringy stuff. This all makes complete sense to me. Now I know to simply change toothpaste.

It's me again, from the above post. I also use Crest Pro Health toothpaste. Could they both be causing the issue?

Now I know what the issue is! I have had this stringy stuff for the last 4/5 days and I switched to crest pro health a little less than 2 weeks ago!!

You are rinsing with Listerine/mouth wash too often, it has alcohol in it and is what is drying your mouth out. Rinse only once a day, and try dry brushing (meaning without toothpaste) its actually really good for your teeth and gums. Its a common misconception by toothpaste ads and companies that you need to always use it, you don't. See your dental hygienist more often as well. Talk about your home care.

As soon as I stopped using Sensodyne whitening toothpaste the white stringy stuff disappeared. Thinking back, I think it did start at the time I changed to using that toothpaste.

The same thing happened to me. I spoke to my dentist about it and it is because of my mouthwash. Try gargling with salt water instead. I don't get it as often anymore. Hopefully, it will help. :)

I logged onto this site to see if anyone else has white, skin-like threads in their mouth. I have read most of the comments and it shed some light on it. It is really weird because I have never known anything like it. at first I thought it was coming out of my one tooth but after two visits to the dentist, he concluded that it was epidermia (skin) peeling off from my gums. Now, this has been going on for about two months, and the only thing I am doing differently, is eating home-made crunchies which are rather chewy (not to mention yummy), and full of seeds, nuts, granola, and everything healthy. I can only conclude that it's the roughness of the crunchies, or something in the crunchies that are affecting my gums. I have been using Sensodyne for a good few years so I don't think it would be that. However, I have been rinsing my mouth with it last thing at night. Maybe that's not such a good idea.

Sjogrens can cause this as well.
