how about a set of towels for the bath?
kitchen towels and wash cloths, oven mitts
spices for cooking (does he actually cook?)
kitchen gadgets like can opener, knives, peeler, serving spoons, spatulas, etc
the cookbook is a nice idea, especially if he doesn't cook just yet and needs a bit of help. the gf did ok with that one imho.
