After a lifetime of eating meat, I have recently decided to become a vegetarian. I know there are a bunch of meat replacers around, and I have tried a few of them so far. One that I have avoided thus far is tempeh, because it looks odd to me. Please tell me what the taste of tempeh is? How does one prepare tempeh?

To start with, I must say that tempeh looks the way it does because it is basically a load of fermented soybeans, stuck together. Perhaps that sounds less than lovely, but for what it is worth, Asians have been eating it for thousands of years now. I like the taste of tempeh, but find it very hard to describe. You can easily cook, stir fry or put it in some oven dish, and it easily takes on other flavors, like spices as well. I often marinate it in a mixture of spices and soy sauce overnight, and then use it the next day. I also love it when it is grilled.
