The Source of the Problem:

Yeast, or candida albicans, is a fungus which lives naturally in our bodies but can become overgrown in the vagina (or the mouth, the digestive tract, etc.) when the body's ph becomes too alkaline or too acidic (the vagina is naturally acidic). Sex can change vaginal ph for a couple of reasons, but when we have chronic yeast infections after sex (I've struggled with them for almost 20 years), there are a number of other factors at work, and all of them have to be addressed. There is more than one cause of our problem, and each one has to be targeted.

All cells are surrounded by tiny cilia, or little hairs which protect them. Dietary changes, food over-processing, and industrialized farming shifts over the last fifty years mean that fruits and vegetables lack a large percentage of the nutrients which help our cells grow those little hairs. Without them, yeast and oxidizing free radicals (which damage cells) can attack. So, yeast infections can occur after intercourse because of the slight abrasion which happens to the vaginal walls during penetration. The body ramps up to heal those tiny tears, but yeast is in the way.

And the main reason that it's in the way is that our modern diet feeds yeast like a two-headed monster. It grows exponentially on just a little bit of glucose (sugar), simple carbohydrates (breads), and starchy foods. Yeast also likes a lot of other foods you'd be surprised to learn about. There is also the factor involving meats and dairy products which include antibiotics and estrogens. None of this is helping us to fight off yeast (and a lot else).

Remedies:

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a good guy bacterium which helps to compensate for yeast in the digestive tract, as well as in the vagina. You can buy it in most any typical grocery or natural food store. Be certain to get one which must be refrigerated so that you know you're getting the live culture; dead ones can do nothing for you. Lactobacillus acidophilus will help to regulate your digestive system, too.

Another home remedy for yeast is 100% pure essential tea tree oil. You can make a vaginal suppository with a tampon by first coating the tip of a tampon in a mild lubricant (like olive oil or KY Jelly) and then adding a few drops of the tea tree oil. Insert and wear the tampon once or twice per day for 30 minutes each time.

This remedy can also be made into a douche using warm water and tea tree oil. I use 1 part tea tree to 5 parts water. I don't use this method regularly, because douching isn't the best way to approach the vagina, but tea tree can and definitely has helped me. Be mindful that directly applying tea tree can irritate the vulva, so dilute it, don't apply directly, and use only the amount that feels best to you.

Below is a free eBook on chronic candida. The writer is very much about natural remedies (trust me that the alopathic, or medically prescribed and OTC ones will only set you up for rebound infections). She's also from the UK so she refers to yeast infection as thrush.

I also highly recommend Dr. Christiane Northrup's book, Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom. She's been a gynecologist for decades and has an approach which speaks not just to the physical body, but to your emotional and life history.

If you have the gut feeling that your body might be trying to get your attention, listen.

What needs to be done is this: when u get treated for yeast your bf should also be treated....because even tho it may not affect him....he will be a carrier of the fungus/yeast cell so everytime u guys have sex he will pass it back to u

Ladies, I suffered like you did for two years. See a specialist and ask about vulvodynia. Best of luck.

Alright Ive had this same problem and you know what go to the doctor get medicine and cure your yeast infection and then get medicine for your partner! Guys dont generally show symptoms of a yeast infection so they dont know! So if you had it and then cured it and then had sex your partner is still left with it and is giving it right back... cycle

If you are getting a yeast infection every time you have sex with the same petson and he's not receiving treatment himself, then he is passing it back to you. Men who are not circumcize are prone to yeast infections and usually have no symptoms. It doesnt mean he is not clean...bacteria lives under the foreskin causing yeast. Also men who are circumcized can give you a yeast infection by sleeping with multiple partners. Both partners must be treated for atleast 7 days. Dont do the 2 or 3 day creams, only 7 day. Yes its messy and its a long time, but it works much better.

There are indeed long term effects. They include kidney damage, and eventually kidney failure.

my issue too

Douching is not good for you. There are several reputable sources that are against douching, and douching often causes yeast infections because it gets rid of the bacteria you need in there.

Someone suggested plain Greek yogurt. To put it inside me.

I dealt with the same issue for many years, about ages 22-28. Every time I had sex, or even masterbated, I would get what I thought was a yeast infection. Monistat always worked to cure it, but made it very stressful having to use it every single time. After many different dr appointments about it, I went in while experiencing an infection and they took a sample to test for what kind/strand of yeast I had. To both our surprise, it came back that there was no yeast present at all! What I can chalk it up to is irritation from your own fluid. To help, cleanse or use a wipe before and after sex, ALWAYS be taking a daily probiotic (ph balance is key), and use a vagisil-type cream after intercourse to stop the irritation from spreading and possibly becoming an infection. Changing your diet to lessen bread/carbs and increase veggies/nuts/lean protein will do wonders. And also unfortunately it's a lot to do with hormones. Mine finally have seemed to balance out after years of having this issue, so don't give up hope. Eat better, take probiotics, maintain sanitary health and use the cream after intercourse! Also ask your doctor to do a yeast lab test to see if/which strands you have, as different strands can be tackled in different ways to be most effective.

Hi I know this post was a while ago but please help! I have the same exact situation! I go back and forth between yeast and bacterial infections every single time I have sex with my boyfriend. I have tried all the same medications. My doctor tells me to use lunrication during sex, condoms, and to wash up and pee after sex. Nothing is helping! Did you find a solution??
