I went to the doctor to have my thyroid tested after I could not lose weight not matter what I did following the birth of my son. I found out that I had hypothyroidism. After many frustrations and much research I decided to stop taking my thyroid medicine (because it seemed to me it was making me gain weight) and I started taking iodine/iodide supplements. I got my blood results back today and I am on the low side of normal now. I am not a doctor and I am not saying anyone should go off their medicine. I just promised myself if it worked I would let people know. It could have been pregnancy related and went away naturally or it could have been the iodine/iodide. Take care and good luck! I am thinking of you!

I also was diagnosed with hypothyroidism after pregnancy and I was on medication for 5 months. After loosing a lot of hair I decided to stop the medication. I had my hormones checked and although they were in normal levels I couldn't loose weight no matter what I did. I tried diet, excercise, diet pills, accupuncture...notthing worked. Some doctors say I have to take medication to the rest of my life and some believe it will get back to normal naturally... I don't know. I's been 16 months now and I still can't loose weight and now I'm suffering from depression. Before pregnancy and hypothyroidism I was size 8 and modelling lingerie, now I'm 12 stone and can't look at myself in the mirror. I really would like to know what could work? what diet? what excercise? how to get control back to my life...

Hi I have been Hypo since I was 5 years old and I hate it. I don't have the energy to exercise and I'm tired all the time my medicine has been changed so many times. I am 43 years old and I'm 5 feet tall with a big belly and I have not found anything to work for me, there are so many diets and advertisements to lose weight but for people suffering from this is not at all fun. I wish I didn't have this problem!! Its always blood work after blood work, can someone please tell me will this ever get fixed.

This diet is from a program that is called the "6 week body makeover" and shouldn't be used by everyone. There is a formula for every individual to work out in this program. You need to "body type" yourself first and then go with the diet that fits your body type and gender. This diet that is here appears to be for a type B female. DO NOT USE this if you are male, you will not have enough nutrition in it to sustain you. I have bought and used this and it does work, even with my hypothyroidism. But you still have to walk! So you can't avoid the exercise to lose weight. Good luck!!

I have hypothyroidism for almost 4 years now. Have found it very difficult to regulate both with compounded natural thyroid (which made me very sick) and with synthroid. The best combo I found for a while was synthroid and cytomel. It was more controlled replacement of more than what synthroid alone could do and not as uncontrolled as compounded thyroid. Right now going through another phase which is high blood pressure and I always had very low blood pressure. I don't really have a big weight problem - I'm about 15lbs over my optimum weight so that is not an issue with me. It's how the disease affects my heart that is what I am facing.

I have lost 50 lbs this year by following Dr Oz's advice of not eating high glycemic carbs...white carbs. Instead I eat brown rice, sweet potatoes, wheat flour, substitute sugar, wheat pasta...lots of fresh fruits, veggies, nuts, and whole grains. Since losing the weight, I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. It was extremely easy to lose the weight, I wonder if eating so much fiber caused the low thyroid activity.

I have been hypo since 2008. When I first got on the med. my Dr. started me out on 10mg of Tapazole but i had to take 3 pills @ the same time each day..so (30mg.) Every 4 months I would go back to him and he would drop a pill.. Now I am taking 2.5mg of Tapazole.. soon I should be off if my blood work keeps coming out good.. He also told me to stay on a 800 cal. diet.. so I didn't gain wieght. It was hard for me to stick to so did gain 3-5 lbs..  So now I'm working out and going to try hard to stick to the 800 cal. a day.. I hope this helps someone..

If the med. your Dr. is giving you isn't working and the level is going up maybe you need a diff med. I am hypo and was put on Tapazole its worked great for me. Everyone is diff but Dr.'s are not always right. I was given the run around for years about what was wrong with me.. the Dr's always want to give you a depression pill.  I knew I wasn't depressed I was just tired all the time but when a started with the hair loss..that was it. After 4 years of thinking Im going crazy..they told me Oh your hypothyriod. You know your body and so don't give up!!

Okay lady, at the end of the day, you need to make exercise a priority. The reason you don't have time for exercise is because you don't MAKE the time. Everyone has 168 hours a week and trust me, when you finish college and your coursework, you'll have even less time. The key is balance, find 3 x 30 min sessions once a week and make them NON-NEGOTIABLE. If you don't make the time to exercise three times a week, then you need to make the time to feel groggy, to feel fat, to put your body under unnecessary stress from carrying extra weight, feeling unhappy in your clothes, whatever it is. And to be honest, I can't believe no one else has picked up on that. And because you have hypothyroidism, it's even MORE CRUCIAL that you over others NEED TO make that a priority! Yes, diet plays an incredibly important role, but you're making your job a hell of a lot easier if you get off your butt and go burn a few calories, be it brisk walking or whatever tickles your pickle. Good luck and let me know how it goes. If you need some motivation hit me up. It's my job, and I feel very passionately about it because I know exercise changes lives.

I have had hypothyroidism for about 11 years now.  I have went from 106 to as high as 245; it is depressing.  I am tired all the time; my meds have been adjusted so many times it isn't funny.  I have tried all the diets, do this and do that's and I am so sick of it I can't see straight.  I lost from 245 to 172 and felt my body changing again and relayed this to my dr. at  the time; who would not listen to me.  I gained 20 lbs in one month and have put on another 20 lbs since; which puts me at 212.  I changed dr.'s and with the first blood test; they changed my dosage of synthroid yet again.  I am tired of being overweight and my husband telling me I could do something about it if I wanted to.  People do NOT realize what we go through.  I do exercise daily.  I am not a slob; I am active.  My joints hurt and I have insomnia.  Can someone PLEASE help?
