I have had hypothyroidism for years (having hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and all the typical menopause symptoms). I went to a muscle-testing nutritionist, who said my thyroid was not functioning well. She put me on iodine supplements, as well as Thyroxal (a natural thyroid support supplement). That solved all of my menopause symptoms. But the thing that helped the most was changing to a mostly-raw diet. I dove head-first into being raw, checked out a bunch of books from the library, and looked at countless YouTube videos for recipes. It's easy, and there is no counting calories or fat. When you're eating healthy, fresh food, your body doesn't need as much, so you almost instantly start losing body fat. Exercise helps that along more quickly.
Don't be intimidated by being raw. It's not salads every day. My typical day looks like this:
Breakfast
Several different fruits (a banana, mango, some pineapple and grapes do nicely) Or, I make a "granola" cereal using some raw flattened grains like oats/spelt/barley, a handful of hulled buckwheat groats, some chopped almonds/walnuts, some chopped up dried cherries, and some vegan mini chocolate chips. Sprinkle with cinnamon, ground cacao powder, and coconut flakes. Pour on some coconut milk and enjoy.
Lunch
A veggie sandwich with thin-sliced cucumber, carrots, celery and tomato either on sprouted bread or rolled in a collard leaf. Or, carrot and celery sticks dipped in almond butter.
Dinner
Raw tacos made by taking the insides from an avocado, mash them up, sprinkle liberally with taco seasonings, and spread on a Romaine lettuce leaf, throw on some chopped tomatoes, onions, fresh salsa, some cashew "cheese" on top, and hot peppers (if you like it hot), then enjoy.
It's really not hard being raw, and I do eat some cooked foods once in a while, but I make sure they are healthy cooked foods.
Our bodies were not meant to eat processed foods, so your whole body will function better if you only feed it fresh fruits and veggies. And for heaven's sake, NO carbonated drinks! Diet drinks are the WORST thing you can do to yourself. They will keep you fat.
I have been hypo for 26 years now and I am on 100 mcg. I have noticed over the last year or so that it is very easy for me to gain weight. I was walking 5 miles a day and I still gained weight even when I ate healthy. My issue is that I do not want to spend all of my spare time working out just to keep a teenagers body. I struggle with this everyday and I hate my body. I am now planning to go to a nutritionist to see if I can get a diet plan tailored for me. I have only found that exercise is what works but you have to be ruthless about it.
Wow, GrannyPeck, you need to make some drastic changes. First, you should look into pHMiracle Greens by Dr. Young. 1. You should try to switch at least half of your meals to raw fruits and veggies, and drink at least one glass of water with a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime in it during the day. Your body sounds extremely acidic, which is feeding all of your ailments. Read up on alkaline diets on the Internet, and you'll see what I mean. 2. Immediately stop any diet drinks, if you drink them (they are highly toxic and fattening). 3. Find a nutritionist who does muscle testing and have them test you. You'll be shocked at how much they can tell you without you telling them anything. I have been going to one for the last few years, and my hypothyroidism is MUCH better than it has ever been. Now I only take iodine and thyroid feeding supplements and feel better than I ever have. 4. Eliminate any foods with high fructose corn syrup or anything else corn-related unless it is organic. Do the same with soy (which is chaotic on hormones) and canola oil. You'd be surprised how many foods have soy or soybean oil in them. 5. Eliminate dairy from your diet. Dairy has actually been shown to CAUSE osteoporosis, while doctors tout it as a cure. You can get more (and better) calcium from eating a lot of greens. I did all of these things, and the excess body fat has practically fallen off, including the belly fat. I have a lot more energy and the gray in my hair is turning back to my natural brown. I hope you'll try my suggestions and let me know how it works for you.
hi, My name is Veena,I am hypo patient too, since I was 17years old and now am 38.the best thing u can do is walking and eat less rice n stop coke.I totally stop soft drinks from last 15 years.hope this will work
I went GF. It seems to have helped some of the "puffiness" associated with hypothyroid, but has made no impact on my weight whatsoever.
Also, bread is THE WORST thing you can do if you're trying to get rid of belly fat. It sits in your intestines for a very long time, continuing to "ferment."
I am hypo with low fx thyroid and underweight I wish I can gain at least 20 lbs. I am 4' 11" and petite 81lbs. what would be a good weight for me?
im 39 and on 350mcg a day i have half my thyroid and am fat as a bear i have tried so much to lose wieght since 2005 . every time they raise my meds i gain 10 lbs. i also take 100,000 units of vit d a week i need some help here cant staND TO LOOK IN THE MIRROR
I have been hypo for my whole life. I have used just about every type of medicine out there. For those using the synthetic type of thyroid. STOP! Its a waste of time and your money. Use Amour thyroid. Its a natural thyroid found in pig. But it contains the 2 types of hormones found in humans. T3 & T4.
Always try to eat lean protein with every meal and make sure you get a little exercise a day
