The ringing was really loud in the first 2 weeks after I stop the med. It reduces a lot during the 3rd and 4th weeks and now it's the 5th week, the ringing went up a little bit. I am worried.

I am a Hungarian adult 59 years old. I was on accutane about 30 years ago. The tinnitus started at the middle of my treatment. I continued taking the medcine. The buzzing (ss) sound is continous from these days. It is moderate like a normal ss voice. It can disappear very rare if 1. I drink white vine 2. I take a warm shower 3. I take Gingko Biloba. These methods are not absolute but I think the problem is that the accutane lifted my sugar level in the blood. I have about 6.2 value at mornings. I take medcine against blood sugar but it does not modify my ear (head) noise. I experienced that some eatings, those that cause "grains" in the blood worsen the problem immediatly. Sugar rich eatings also cause harder noise, because the sugar results in smaller diameter of micro blod wessels. The noise is absulute similar to water slag(? Tube) noise, when somebody applies smaller diameter to the flexible slag. Check it! My second experience was that my super brain destroyed by the accutane. This caused by the same effect. That is the brain micro tubes of blood become smaller. I suppose, the "oil" disappeared not only from my face, but from my all body, so from my ear and from my blood wessels too. The result is a more stupid brain, rigid walls of the blood wessels, tinnitus and a lower level of live quality...but my face become normal without oil..
Now I started to listen to music. High end music, as a hobby. It helps to hide the tinnitus, that I not hear if I not focuse to that. I heard about a special electronic small box (2000eur) that can normalize the conditioning of the neurons in the area of the hearing part of the brain. I don't know that it is good for us or not, because I know that my problem relates to the diameter of blood wessels. A good method to record the tinnitus level plus eatings, medcines, motion and other life parameters for a longer period then check the correlations between the tinnitus level and the others. Other good method to collect the experiences of others. I am here because of this. Thank you very much for your stories!

Upon noticing any change in hearing (either hearing loss, or sensation of other sounds such as tinnitus, changes in sound quality etc...) pursuant to treatment involving isotretinoin (Accutrane, Acnotin, among others), immediate cessation of these medications is indicated. Both hearing loss and tinnitus have been reported in patients receiving such treatment, enough so as to qualify for being listed as side-effects of the drugs by both NIH and FDA. The studies reporting this association typically have not been well-controlled (one of the reasons for the mount of time it took to recognize these two side effects), and began as independent anecdotes and case studies in the published research. Hearing loss could be permanent, or temporary, and even progressive (symptoms reportedly worsening even after cessation of the treatment drugs. Some patients have also reported aural fullness and unsteadiness, hence the need to differentiate this side effects from other pathologies such as Meniere's disease. A few studies have reported abnormal auditory brainstem function sometimes in the absence of hearing loss per se. If that is further substantiated, someone could indeed suffer abnormal auditory function which may not be manifest as hearing loss for some time after cessation of drug intake. In any case, patients should not hesitate to get immediate follow-up with ORL specialists (ear, nose and throat) and an audiologist both, upon noticing any such symptoms.

I'm 35 now. I had a couple of courses of Accutane back when I was 19/20. I developed severe tinnitus at the time and it is still there to this day. It's actually worse now then it was back then. Although the accutane did work wonders I can't help but think it wasn't worth it. The tinnitus is so loud I have trouble concentrating while reading. Makes study all but impossible. I still get the odd break out but nothing major. I wash using La Roche Posay products now and they are amazing. Highly recommended.

I have this now. On 40mg per day for 1.5 months and wake up in the morning with pressure/stuffiness/and sound of fan in my left ear. My doc is saying it's allergies...but I've never experienced this from allergies. How did your case resolve?

Do you remember what meds you where on, I'm not to sure if I'm going to have chronic ringing in my ear but I've felt like it's getting better not so sensitive to sound and feel like the ringing is going away it's been a week now.

I had just started accutane, 30mg twice a day and alby day 4 I developed an "ear infection" which turned into hearing loss. Both primary and dermatologist said it's not related to accutane so I continued the accutane. Well after 4 more days, hearing in R ear continues to feel muffled and stuffy. I stopped the accutane and went to an ENT, was put on high dose steroids with no improvement. Now I'm doing cortisone injection in the ear to try and regain some hearing. Crazy how this side effect is as known as it should be. I'm 36 and shouldn't have having hearing loss :(
