Wow, I've had this additition since I was about 10 (I'm now 37) and thought I was probably the only nutty one! I was too embarrressed to research it until now, as I didn't want anyone finding out that I had it. What a relief to hear that this isn't completely uncommon. Talking to a therapist might be really helpful, but I'd feel ashamed to bring this disgusting addiction up to anyone (aside from you guys).
This addiction started for me right after I had lice. Throughout the years, I've seen my brother (who had lice the same time as me) also scratching at his dandruff, but I've never talked to him about it. I was addicted to hair pulling in early elementary school, and I've had issues with anxiety for as long as I can remember. I'm not sure if scratching for dandruff helps to relieve my stress/anxiety, but I do know that it can be really satisfying. Esp when I find big clumps of dandruff. (Strange and gross, I know!)
My hair has been thinning for about 8 years now, and I just assumed it was a herititary thing, but maybe it's also (or even primarily) due to the scratching? I wish I could stop this gross habit...
