I'm 51 and I've always loved scratching my scalp and getting rewarded with a little snow shower. I don't think it's writers and for me it's not even a compulsion. It just feels good. Who doesn't like having their back scratched? You should all be easy on yourselves.

I've been addicted to scratching my head, picking out the white stuff from under my nails, and collecting it into a big pile since I was in 8th grade. We were examining things under a microscope in biology class. I decided to scratch my head and look at the white oily residue under my scalp. Ever since I saw it under the microscope, I've had an addiction to it. I am 26 now. I like to scratch my scalp, face, behind my ears, inside my ears, and anywhere that I can scrape off dead skin like my chest, ankles, or legs. I like picking the dirt out of my toenails after taking a shower. It's easier to get all the dirt out when it's wet. I've had the sensation to collect all of the piles into Tupperware or a zip-lock bag, but I've never gone through with it. I have NEVER wanted to eat it. I love the way the dandruff/skin feels under my nails. When I'm done scratching, I roll the pile into a ball and look at it before throwing it away. I've never scratched to the point of creating scabs, bleeding, or bald spots. I get my hair done regularly at a nice salon. I have very long, thick, blonde hair. Surprisingly, there is more white stuff under my nails after I have washed my hair and it is completely dry. As my hair gets dirtier, I have less to collect. I do it daily, mostly out of boredom. Half the time, I don't realize I'm doing it. It's nice to know there are others out there like me.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who does this. My scalp started getting dry later in high school. I noticed that if I barely scratched my head in the car, I could see it come snowing down onto my pants or the car seat. I've always loved peeling off sunburn, since I was even younger. Now I love scratching my dandruff out. I found a black comb that makes it even more pleasurable to do, because the dandruff is very visible. I also love to see it land on my black pants, or my black desktop. I have never done it enough to give myself any scabs or scars; I don't want to hurt myself. I just love seeing the flakes! .. I even sometimes like to run my fingers through my boyfriend's hair when he gets sunburnt on the head and it peels, or if his hair doesnt wash thoroughly.. although he might start to think I'm insane if I do it any longer..

I have news for all of you felllow pickers out there.  I am 55 years old, been married to my husband for 28 years.  I have picked his dandruff for all 28 years and still a pickin!  He says it relazing to him most the time.  I never really understood why I have this obsession.  I used to save the biggest pieces of dandruff in a small black jewlery box so I could enjoy looking at them and feeling of them.  I have always been stable and have a professional career.  This has always been a source of relazation to me as well.  My fellow dandruff pickers, quit worrying!  Beleive me --There are bigger fish to fry!! Happy pickin

I swear to god this is so damn addictive . I am like always in front of the mirror scratching dandruff . My hand is always in my head . It might sound gross but nah.......the feeling is quite good. I dunno but I wanna stop doing the somehow . I've tried several shampoos and oils and some sorts of geese but it's all USELESS. It apparently goes a little less visible but it does stay there , and then I have the worst curly and dry type of hair (may be not the worst but yeah.....) which does nothing but creates more difficulties . The day I wash my hair it puffs off.

Wow, that sounds great! those little delicious shampoo-flavored crunchy flakes! I also add my dandruff to food when I am cooking! Just prepare and gather those little chicky flakes, and sprinkle to my frying pan with salt and pepper. If you can gather handful of those dandruffs, you can actually make a dip. It will take weeks to gather the enough amount of flakes for the dip. I have gathered little pinch so far, but I am going for it. You can adjust the taste by switching shampoos! But I don't recommend conditioners, because they are bad for you to consume.

I am glad I found this thread. I didn't think anyone else had this obsessive habit. I started this habit when I was younger, when I would find white greasy residue under my fingernails. One day, I found out it was from scratching at my head and it was dead skin cells under my nails. I used to be very obsessive compulsive about cleanliness and so I thought that if I scratched all of this dirty oily residue off of my head, my head would be clean. Now I know that our skin is always sluffing off dead cells, so it will never be "clean" in that sense. However, it all began as an obsession-compulsion. I began scratching and picking out flakes and shaking them all out onto the table. I'd stand in front of the mirror for hours picking out dandruff. It used to be worse when I was younger, but the habit still remains now that I'm 26. The compulsion to pick my hair has lessened, but I have noticed that I will start scrathing and picking again when I am stressed as a result of my anxiety.
