I wish more physicians would study the root cause behind this. I see only 1 response from a physician here and it is very vague. I would love to participate in a case study.

omg i didnt know dat dis even had a name! I have been doing this for lyk 10 years now! It first started when i was 10 and had got chickenpox.I used to pick those itchy scabs on my head constantly. Now it has become this embarrassing habit that i cant come out of! Although i dont do it in front of others, i feel disgusted as it increases dandruff and makes my hair greasy. I also end up wasting a lot of time as the urge to scratch my hair never ends. I do it subconsciously when im stressed or thinking about something. Due to this i have to wash my hair every alternate day as my hair starts smelling.I generally start scratching the day after i wash my hair.
i think its partly hereditary as i have seen my mom also doing this to her hair. But im way more creative than her when it comes to picking dandruff.

I just love dandruff. I love seeing it come off, watching the little flakes catching the sunlight before landing on a dark surface. I like close-up videos on youtube of people removing dandruff flakes from their head. It's awesome. I don't know why anyone would want to get rid of it. I wish we could all have cradle-cap forever. Like a never-emptying box of Tim-Tams.

I've tried Selsun Blue shampoos, other medicated shampoos and olive oil/other scalp moisturizers, including conditioner, but to no avail; they just keep coming. It's a genetic issue of eczema that only affects the scalp. It could be worse, I guess!
My hair is black and gets curly if I let it grow too long, so that makes the flakes visible before even being peeled up. So frustrating.

I never moved as a teen. My head doesn't even itch I just like searching for the big chunks. Little ones are less satisfying. I've actually even set the bigger chunks in a place where I can find them again but I'm so enthralled. It's very strange. My sister also has the problem where she is constantly scratching her head. I do feel a little bummed when I can't find anymore large patches but it's usually a sign that I need to stop.
