Hi

Is there an established link between cases of bacterial tonsilitis and poor air quality?

I've been living in a major city in a developing nation for 10 months. The city has severe pollution problems. I also work in an industrial environment where sandblasting and paint-spraying, with the associated airborne pollutants, is ongoing most of the time. I wear a protective face mask but cannot wear this all the time.

In 10 months I have had 5 cases of bacterial tonsilitis. Prior to moving here I had no problems with my tonsils at all.

My doctor says that pollution is a major factor, I was looking for any evidence, or personal experience to add to this, because I'm hoping that removal of myself from the environment will solve the problem.

Any input much appreciated. Thanks.
I've been SCOURING the internet for someone who might share what I've deduced about my own increased propensity to get sore throats, and you've just provided it! I've only started getting sore throats at the start of a cold (and sometimes stopped them becoming one) since I started cycling (in London) 3 yrs ago. I've just been reading up about adenoids and think I might actually have slightly inflamed ones, as I've started snoring / I 'choke' / cough easily if liquid goes even slightly the wrong way, and my throat feels quite full sometimes when lying on my back. I'm petrified of having to have a rhinoscopy or an op to remove so hoping that as it's mild, I can get away with maybe steroids or, ideally, nothing and it won't get worse!
