Yes of course there are methadone babies, who's moms were on methodone for treatment of a drug problem. My grandbaby was just born and had to be in hospital for three weeks to wean him off of the methadone. Now he's home and all he does is cry.....He sleeps nice but when he is up he does nothing but cry. Its a sad thing to watch and my daughter feels guilty because the day she found out she was pregnant we went to put her in rehab and they don't detox you when your pregnant because it can kill the baby. So we did what they said and now we are going through this hell. They told us it was better to be on methodone than heroine, when pregnant. I don't understand drug addiction and to watch this baby go through this should make any women who's thinking of getting pregnant to get some help first.
But of course life isn't that simple. drug addiction isn't that simple. So now he may end up back in the hospital because he lost a few ounces but we'll see. He was 9lbs 2oz. So there went their theory that meth babies are small in birth weight. So he is a healthy little thing otherwise, strong. But, give us the strength to get through this. Patience, patience, is what it takes. And to those women at the program who lied to my daughter about the fact that it was so simple once their born. They told her he will just have to stay in the hospital for two weeks and then he's home and everything will be fine. NOT. Nothing is a simple as people make it out to be. Every situation is different.
So I offer the advice of being very very patient, and keep the faith, that your baby can be fine after a time of constant crying, digestive problems, gas, loose stools, and vomiting. At least my daughter has my husband and myself helping her because I don't know how anyone does this on their own. Its heartbreaking.

Methadone is safe for a woman to take during pregnancy. It does not harm the baby and has no long term effects, physical or mental, that will harm the baby in the future. There is a chance that the baby could be born and show some withdrawal symptoms from the methadone, neonatal abstinence syndrome is the medical term, however the withdrawal can be treated in the hospital as soon as the baby is born. If the mother breastfeeds, then the small dose of methadone in the breastmilk is in most cases adequate to relieving any possible withdrawal symptoms and is the best option for the baby in all cases, unless the mother is using illicit drugs. Most of the babies who are born with extreme withdrawal, were exposed to illicit harmful drugs in the womb which are the real problem, not just methdone which has been shown to be safe during pregnancy. You need to make sure that your baby is treated and seen by a medical professional who is trained and educated in the treatment of babies born to methadone maintained mothers. There are even hospitals who specialize in this and have programs designed for pregnant women on MMT, methadone maintenance, who have the correct education and medication to treat babies born to mothers in MMT. I would advise that you try to find a medical professional who is educated about Methadone Maintenance and pregnancy to check and treat the baby of a MMT patient. Sadly, there are many people, even medical professionals and doctors, who are severely misinformed about methadone maintainance in general not to mention MMT and pregnancy and you should try to avoid these people at all costs. Misinformed people will say things to scare you and make you feel that women who take methadone during pregnancy are harming their baby, which is the furthest thing from the truth. Methadone maintanance is the preferred and best method of treatment for pregnant women who are addicted to opiates like heroin and oxycontin because it is safe for the baby. Trying to detox from heroin, oxycontin, and even methadone for that matter during pregnancy can actually kill the unborn baby. Women who take methadone during pregancy instead to treat their opiate addiction are doing the right thing and their baby is safe. Although there is the chance that the baby can be born with withdrawal, there is safe treatment for them if you find knowledgable medical centers, and in few cases the babies may have to go through a detox for at most 10 days, unless their are other medical complications having nothing to do with the methadone or if the mother was using other illicit drugs, drinking, or smoking which are all much worse for the baby than methadone. Take care of your babies and make sure they are seen by a doctor who is educated in methadone maintanance and the treatment of neonatal abstinence syndrome. Knowlege is power, do not let uninformed people try to scare you. Ignorance is very dangerous, so educate yourself and find and talk to people who actually know about MMT and pregancy. Do not let gossip and horror stories from uniformed ignorant people scare you or guide your decisions whatsoever. I cannot say it enough, EDUCATE YOURSELF!! good luck with your babies and to all the moms on MMT STAY STRONG, you are doing what is best for you and your baby!

I have read alot of post's on here about learning more about methadone. Well for starters when I found out that I was having a grandchild and her mother was on methadone that is just what I did . I started research. And guess what the mmt clinics lie to you. THEY WANT YOU TO STAY HOOKED!
so they can make money. You can get off safely without miscarry from the 3rd to 6th month of pregnancy.DO THE RESEARCH! It is unsafe in the 1st trimester and the 3rd trimester but safe in the second . My daughter inlaw was selfish and did not get off now my grand daughter is the one suffering. I took all of the info that i found to the clinic they wanted none of it. So I talked to some of the ones I knew to be pregnant .Gave them the info 2 of them took it to thier gyn's He did follow up research and both gave birth to non addicted healthy babies. And both were very thankful. They are sharing it with others. So to say that you will kill your baby if you get off while you are pregnant is a lie that the clinic tells you . DIG DEEPER. Only a selfish person would let a baby withdraw from what they don't want to withdraw from themselves. We are 2 weeks in and my granddaughter is still suffering . I believe that if you want children, be completely clean first. No one should be able to inflict this kind of suffering on an innocent child. Methadone is not safe.
It does not cause birth defects, but the withdrawals are the same for an infant as it is for an adult . The infant just cant sit up and tell you what hurts . IT'S SELFISH! I do know about addictions, and the control that it has. However, talk to anyone that has been off for a while and they will tell you . If you are still addicted to anything ,Its out of fear of the unknown,or selfishness that you only care about yourself and noone else matters ,or just weakness, someone not strong enough to stand on your on two feet. Addiction is hard I understand that . But please do the REAL RESEARCH dont go by what the clinics tell you THEY LIE!

We just had our little girl placed with us via the foster system for adoption who was born addicted to methadone. My daughter DID show signs of drug effects. Turns out birth mom wasn't consistant in the methadone program. I had been under the assumption if you don't stick with the program you get booted out but have learned differently in this thread. The state was able to get a hold of birth mom's prenatal appointment (there was only one) and it showed she was also positive for methamphetamines, amphetamines and cocaine, in addition to methadone. Birth mom addmits to using heroine in the begining of the pregnancy but none of the other things.

While I'm sure there are moms out there who are staying on the methadone program without abusing illegal drugs, but I wonder how many others out there who are birthing babies are like my daughter's birth mom? I wonder if some of these babies showing signs of drug withdrawals have also been exposed to other substances.

My daughter's birth mother too was said to be nodding off at a visit with my daughter (in DHS custody) and she'd just come from the clinic. Doesn't the clinic monitor the effects on the patients to better determine proper dosage?

The symptoms I saw with my daughter were tremmors and high pitched . I took her into the ER a week ago as her cry was unconsolable and her blood presure was high and her pulse at 200 with no fever. She also had tremors. She was a couple weeks old and the Dr. believes she was having narcotic withdrawals.

My cousin was also exposed to methadone but his birth mom used heroine as well. He had high pitched cries and required a dark room, tight swaddling and white noise.

Methadone saved my baby, as well as me. It's a fallacy that all babies born on methadone will suffer horribly. My son was born 3 wks. early. He is now 9 months old, and is a smart and very active baby. I was addicted to Oxycontin for 5 years. I am 23 years old and painkillers ruined my life, to the point where I stole, lived in my car, etc.. Methadone made me groggy, depressed and sleep a lot, so after he was born I switched to Cyboxin. This drug is amazing- I have begun to feel normal for the first time in years. I don't even think about it now, and I don't have to go and stand in line with some of the awful people at a clinic anymore, deal with their hours or snowdays, etc.. I recommend it to EVERY addict trying to get over fear and pain of withdrawl and methadone dependance. ASK ABOUT IT, Cyboxin gives you your emotions back and makes the transition to living life normally again much easier than methadone. I know mothers who I went to the methadone clinic with that relapsed when they broung their babies home, and it's a shame. I KNOW that methadone is no different than the dope, except it takes the dangerous lifestyle of getting drugs away, which for some (like me) kept me safe throughout my preganancy and off the street. I was (and remain) TERRIFIED of being dopesick. With the clinic, your are 1 missed dose away from picking up or being sick. I found out the hard way, the day after I was sent home from having my son and the clinic had a snow day. NO ONE let me know, although they knew I'd been in the hospital. So I had to go to the Emergency room for Methadone, right downstairs from the nursery my son was in.
My son stayed in the hospital for 15 days. He had jaundice, which I also had as a baby, so that kept him for 4 days to begin with. I was with him every day. He was NOT visibly shaking, vomiting, or screaming EVER, except (only) after his circumsicion or while having blood taken for jaundice testing. He was not even in NICU. I was on methadone my whole pregnancy and used painkillers until 3 months when I'd gone to rehab. My son scored 2s and 4s mostly, and only scored 9 once- again after circumcision when a weekend pedi. was in, not the weekday ones who saw him daily. I have known women who had babies stay for months from methadone, others just 2 days. Some don't have withdrawls at all, and some very badly.. but this is not DEFINATE by any means. I'm not sure this has a correlation with the amount of drug use, because until rehab I was VERY bad. I want people to KNOW about this, because it's a sad disease (addiction) and we pregant addicts are terrified everyday for what we could be bringing our innocent babies into.. to the point where many women give up on the idea of having their babies. I was told if not for methadone, he could die by my doc.. It was AWFUL that some councilrs @ rehab told me he would siezure and suffer and NOT to go on methadone maintenence and he'd be fine. LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTORS ONLY, they know best.
My son has saved my life. If not for him I would not be here at all, this I'm sure of.

I am on methadone currently and have just gave birth to a beautifulk baby boy who is HEALTHY. he went through withdrawls, and was treated with a type of opium. THERE ARE NO LONG TERM EFFECTS. and it is not true that methadone alone does not cause withdrawals. i have been on methadone for almost two years now, i would have been off if i did not get pregnant. i have had ALL clean urines. i have not used ANY drug. To all of the people who are uneducated about methadone in general and newborns born on methadone: PLEASE, if you don't know what you are talking about, don't talk. LEARN before you do. And everyone- don't listen to people just because they say they are or were on methadone. It saved my life. I was far too addicted to herion to detox without any long term care- not just methadone- counselors, groups, etc. . And we all don't nod out. In fact, most people I know that areon it do not nod out. I DO NOT FEEL HIGH ever. If you are on the right dose, which does not have to be a low dose, I'm not on a low dose, you will not nod out or feel high. Not to say that there aren't people who may be doing this. And for the people that have been on the maintenance program- they usually have been herion addicts for long periods of time- their brains are so wired to herion, the methadone is the only thing that will save their lives. It stopped me from craving drugs. Please do not listen to anyone but a DOCTOR. To the women who "did her research" and learned that methadone clinics keep you to make money- there are non profit methadone clinics. There are clinics that take No payments from people that have no insurance, so you didn't do all your research, did you? It's okay though, the other ignorant people, who said being on methadone it is fear, sefishness, etc., t. obviously are not dfamilar with addiction, or if they are, have not been addicted long term to herion. **YOU CANNOT WITHDRAWAL ON METHADONE WHILE PREGNANT UNLESS YOU ARE UNDER FIFTY ML. - so unless you are a DR., or have heard this directly from one (although there is no doubt in my mind that people would say they did to scare women out there) do not state otherwise, Numberous Doctors- at my methadone clinic AND my gyno's told me this. You are disgusting for saying bad things about ANYONE who got pregnant on methadone. It is worlds better than herion. and don't assume that all mothers on methadone just switched from herion, either. like i said i've been on meth. for 2 years, my baby was an accidental pregnancy, although i hate saying that, he is the most beautiful thing in the world. ALL MOTHERS on meth STAY STRONG- along with all you people on methadone and everyone else out there trying to get / stay clean. DON't GO ON THESE INTERNET OPINION SITES FOR INFO. - UNLESS IT IS TO OPEN THE MINDS OF IGNORANT PEOPLE-TALK TO PROFESSIONALS!!!

**there are also actually studies being performed at te yale newh haven hospital in ct, right now , regarding children who were born on methadones high intelligence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ***

P.S.- yes my son cried during the withdrawals, was more alert, had loose stools- but he was NOT IN PAIN or suffering, just more uncomfortable, ACCORDING TO THE DOCTOR- and that was before they started to medicate him and wean him down- SO IT IS NOT PUTTING THE BABY PAIN and even if the baby goes cold turkey- MOST of the battle of a withdrawal is psychological. don't forget that- babies don't have our mental addiction(and that sparks a lot of the physical part). Please educate yourselves.
my son was also in there a lot longer than i thought- not because he wasn't doing well, it was just the process of how they do the detox- they raise them to a comfortable dose- REGARDLESS of how much their mother was on, regardless of how much the baby got from the mother. and then VERY SLOWLY WEAN DOWN. so how long a baby is at the hospital may have nothing to do with how bad the withdrawal is every time.

Another thing- like i said, my son went through withdrawal and i did not use any illicit drugs, alcohol, or nicotine. so do not think because a baby goes through this the mother is using other drugs. that is a sad and stupid judgement.

DO NOT try to make us feel guilty.

BREASTFEEDING IS FINE- there is close to nothing in the breast milk, and in some cases it helps the babies withdrawal, but it is also safe to breastfeed a baby who didn't go through withdrawal and also one that has and has been weaned off and is going home. the baby will not get "addicted" again- which a lot of misinformed people think.

Someone wrote methadone made them have no emotions, a bunch of other c**p. WHAT other mental problems were they suffering from that they may not have listed? I know everyone is different, but most people have plenty of emotions. I am not sleepy or groggy, either. i think she was afraid of having everyone on here judge her. Well, i can keep writing forever- but don't fear methadone for you or your babies- im proof that it works and im not "afraid to get off it". ive been clean two years- have a gorgeous healthy baby, great husband, a car, a house, an awesome job, i go to school ....i Have it all and methadone helped me get it back. When I feel ready I will get off it. It is NOT A DRUG and idiots like you see one stereotypical "drug addict" on methadone and think everyone is like that and they are so wrong. and sad.

TO PEOPLE THAT BROUGHT BABIES HOME: the dr.'s will wait from 48-72 hrs. for signs of withdrawal- crying, loose stools, tense muscles, inability to focus, excessive sucking- if they don't display these signs in this period- they go home- they may have VERY MINOR symptoms at home- if they become worse go to the hospital.

ONE more thing, for now, lol ******* I asked very many Dr.'s about the babies and the methadone- and the ones that actually know about it are the neonatalogists in the NICU. so get ahold of a NICU Dr. because i was misinformed by many other doctors except the NICU ones. And another thing- when it comes to time- there is never a definite answer.

I have been in a methadone clinic for about 2 1/2 years now....I can honestly say that it has saved my life.....I see there are alot of people who down methadone and really don't understand it..and that's fine...but from an addicts experience, it really has done me and alot of other people that I know alot of good. People really should stop judging and really start informing themselves....you'd be suprised what you could learn...
Also, it really hurts me to hear that people say that we're bad people for having babies while on methadone...
for me, I was on a pretty high dose when I found out I was pregnant...and this pregnancy was an accident, so it wasn't planned...I always said I was going to wait until i GOT OFF Methadone before I had a baby, but it happened...and I asked if I could decrease my dose, and the doctorsand nurses told me not to, because that is bad and can hurt the baby...so therefore I was stuck on a high dose...well, my pregnancy went just fine...my little girl grew just like any other baby, with no problems....I she was due oct 14th, 08...but came a little early...she was born on sept 28th at 12:54 am....she was breech, so I had to have a c-section...and this is my first child also, so I had her and there was no signs of any withdrawls, not until about the 7th day...I really thought she wasn't going top need any medication, but they ended up sending her to a diff hospital, which is 2 hrs away...and they finally put her on phenobarbatol and opium..a very low dose..she has been doing really well...other than us being in the hospital since the 28th of sept and here it is now oct 15th...and she'll be in here probably for another week or so....but now that she's on the medication, she's doing fine..yes, she has fussy spells, but what baby doesn't....they do some "scoring" system and they go by a peice of paper that has all these symptoms of withdrawls and if they have any of those then they gain a point, which in all reality isn't right because that scoring system was made for babies withdrawing off herion, and it is different....so, in all honestly..they say not all babies go thru withdrawl...but my baby did, and all togetehr we'll be here for probably over a month....methadone has saved my life, and I will probably stay on it until I am ready to get off, but I would not have another baby on it...it is too hard and heartbreaking...so, please people do not put someone down just because they are having a baby on methadone...more than likely their doctors advised them that it was ok or put them on methadone....we have hearst too, and I guess bettering out lives makes us look like monsters, but us recovering addicts are so misunderstood....I'd like to hear some of your stories if you have had a baby on methadone, write to me on here or e-mail me at ****

i was addicted to heroin when i became pregnant, i got on a methadone program and had a baby girl on feb. 19 2008. she was perfect she had no withdrawels hardly ever cried i was on 30 to 70 mgs throughout the pregnany. it just depends on the BABY, not anything else, what will happen. methadone is consistent that is why it is better than just staying on heroin going up and down all the time, thats not good for the baby. but yes morphine is used in the hospital wherei gave birth and it is a sad thing too. i had five friends have babys on methadone with me. the nurses put everyone of thier babies on morphine as soon as they left the hospital. some of the babies didn't even have to cry constantly to be put on it. i think it was totally unnessacery in some cases and i don't think the nurses had the expierience to make that decision anyway. one of the babies was kept on the morphine after she left the hospital and her mother was instructed to detox her off of it without any medical supervision. the baby went through days of crying and withdrawel, it was worse than what they put her on the morphine for. any suggestions on what i should do, or who i could contact to report this? i live in north carolina

Were are trying to get our baby back from ocs right now as we speak 11/4/08. My fiance was taken methadone prescribed by her obgyn. She went to every visit she talked to her Dr. about Methadone he said you can't get off of methadone it will terminate the baby. She asked if the baby was going to be ok he said yes the was going to be fine we'll have to detox him but he
will be fine. She then asked no one will take my baby he replyed not as long as I'm writing you this medecine. The baby was born he weighed 7lbs4ozs
he stayed in the hospital for two weeks then he came home. Everything was fine untill we heard a knock on the door, social services they asked
all kind of questions the started coming to our house everyday for 3 weeks
When we thought everything was fine we started to move from that Parish
that is when they snatched our baby from us. Our other kids went to school everyday never missed a day of school. When we asked why are you taking the children from us they replyed you can't raise kids on prescription medication. Has anyone heard of such a thing like that.

How can you mothers act like your methadone addicted babies are going to be fine. There have not been real studies done on these children to know what the long term effects will be for these poor things. Not to mention what kind of lives these children will live being raised by drug addict mothers and fathers such as yourselves. If you people want to ruin your lives, go ahead, but there is one drug you people have failed to try and it is called birth control pills. Since you like popping pills so much, why don't you try popping one of those a day. It is a shame that you think this is o.k. You don't deserve these kids.

to the "guest" that said this...
you are ignorant and have NO place to judge ANYONE!
I have been on methadone for 2yrs as a result of a serious medical condition. I was faced with 2 choices: be on pain pills or be on methadone for my serious medical condition that causes severe pain.
I choose methadone. I am a stay at home mother with THREE college degrees. I am the BEST mommy you will EVER see! I keep a beautiful home, my son is very intelligent and sociable, and I am very happily married.
All of this is possible because I am on methadone and NOT on other pain pills. Methadone gave me my life back after being on pain meds for over a year.
I am now 7 months pregnant and on 30mg of methadone. My doctor assures me he has many other pregnant patients giving birth WITH NO SIGNS of withdrawals.
For you to say that "You don't deserve these kids." is WRONG!
I am the best damn mom out there and I live for my children.
NEVER judge another persons life until you walk a mile in their shoes.
Ignorant judgmental people like you dont deserve kids because you raise them to carry on your ignorance and judgmental ways when the world needs more caring and understanding people.
I wish you luck in your miserable judgmental ignorant life!
