What is wrong with these women, having babies while addicted to methadone. Be responsible and take birth control. Go visit a nursery and see the hell these methadone babies go through!!!!

When did it become legal for women to get high, no matter how and born a child addicted to a drug?

Women sadly are using these clinics to get a free high, subject their unborn child to the malicious drug "methadone" and Protective Services can't take the child and convict the mother?

What happened to the law; you do drugs while your pregnant and your child is born addicted to drugs - We take your child and you go straight to jail!

No one knows for sure what the long term effects are for those children born addicted to methadone. The drug companies are not going to make any money if they tell people that their child or children may have mental, emotional, sychological or motor skills, so they tell everyone that methadone is ok for pregnant woment to take.

Those women getting that methadone are so out of it that they have no idea what is going on with their children because they sleep all the time, are always tired, have no appetite and basicly not in touch with reality.

It should be against the law and those clinics should be shut down permantly.

I know for a fact they those clinics will give methadone to anyone. My son's wife is a pill popper and she got pregnant, so she went to one of those clinics and lied to them, telling them that she was a heroin user and boom, she was excepted to the clinic.

When someone goes in to a methadone clinic all they have to do is say I'm addicted to heroin and no one at that clinic does any tests to see what drugs the person is on or using. Any other place that you go to for help automaticlly does multiple tests. So why don't the methadone clinics test to see exactly what drugs the person is using?

The problem with the methadone clinic's is this: By allowing pregnant women to go there they are not letting those women be responsible for their actions. Women who do drugs while pregnant should have their child taken away permanently and they should go to jail. If those clinics would not allow pregnant women to go there I believe there would be less women having babies born addicted. Those clinics just enable women to become pregnant even though they are on drugs.

WOW! I felt like I was reading my own story! I feel your pain in so many ways. I have been on methadone for a little over a year now due to opiate addiction. I am a suburban mom with an education and a wonderful life. I have two healthy boys who were born very, very healthy. Of course, I was not taking methadone or anything else for that matter during my pregnancy. I am so worried about bringing a baby into this world addicted to methadone. I too, would hate myself seeing him/her going thru any kind of withdraws due to something I was taking. I'm so torn on what i should do. I am only 6 weeks so I know I have to make a decision very soon. I don't believe in abortion after the 8 week mark. I am in the process of winging myself off methadone. I receive take - homes from the clinic and i am down to 40m every other day. I am fortunate because i can go almost 48 hrs before i feel any kind of withdraws. I refuse to go thru this pregnancy while taking methadone but i don't know if I can wing myself completely off. I don't believe relapsing is even a issue I am just worried about the stress on me ( if I can even completely detox) and stress on my baby.

I had no intentions of posting but after reading your post I had too. I see a little light knowing that I am not the only one in this heartbreaking situation. i am a very good mother to two beautiful children. I have never "notted off", nor have I ever been on the streets shuting herion. Would it make any difference to some of this people who make such hurtful acusasions if they knew that I became addicted to pain killers because of a very pain full condition?

Let me know where this path leads you and i will keep you in my prayers. The best of luck to the person who made this whole situation a little bit more bearable. keep your head up, we will get thru this!!

i just wanted to say that everything will be okay with the baby. I have been on methadone for almost 7 years now and was on methadone with my daughter who is almost two. she is just as normal as my other two children. and like alot of others if it wasn't for methadone i would probally be dead. I found that with my daughter the first month or so i could wrap her up in a blanket and hold her close to me and it seemed to help alot with withdrawls.

I was one person that was told to go on meathodone not by one doctor but many doctors! At the time i had just completed my 7th surgury due to crohn's Disease and was on no pain medication and was extreamly proud of myself due being 100 % off all narcotics. In April 2008 i thought i was having more problems with my Chrones disease and it turned out that I was 12 weeks pregnet. Due to all the pain I was admitted to the hospital and was told the best option was to go on meathodone once again at a low dose to keep me from me in extreme pain. I did not want to do this but it was a desicion my family, my doctors and myself made. My daughter Emma Rose was Born on November 1st 2008 at 36 weeks. She weighed 6 pounds 9 oz and was perfect. Yes she did have to be weened off meathodone but she was home on November 8 th. My Daughter has done everything faster then most kids. She walked at 9 months and is very smart. So to the people who think that I am a bad person for being on meathadone look at the facts. I am a stay at home mom and my children are my pride and joy. If anyone has any quesitons i am more then happy to answer anything.

Methadone is just a maintenance program. Why not just detox and be done with the drugs?? I guess I understand the pregnancy detox. But in my opinion, people are just using it because they are afraid of a life without drugs. What kind of life is the child going to have. Is the mom constatnly nodding out??? It still makes you high. Furthermore, I think everyone could stop underestimating the effect of the withdrawal on the infant. If the baby could talk I'm sure they would tell you it sucks. In fact, crying is the baby's way of communicating. Do something brave, take a leap of faith, see how wonderful your life would be without any mood or mind altering drug. You may miss out on your baby's first smile while you're nodding off in the chair. Bye the way, why are we withdrawing the baby from the methadone and the mother just gets her usual dose so she doesn't have to feel the effects.

u must be one of those ignorent people i was talking about if u would do a little research before speaking then u would know, if you detox while pregnant the chances of u miscarrying is very very high, so either you do the methadone or u lose ur child. so u cant be just done with it. I am not afraid at all with life without drugs, but i sure the hell wouldnt want to lose a child becuase of selfishness, but that must be the kind of person you are. and if your knodding out in the chair its one of two things, your dont want to be clean so your on to high of a dose or your still using drugs....period!!!! If you know so much about methadone and babies who are born addicted then you wouldn't have to ask questions, my opinion is you have nothing to do with your time so u sit back and judge people and you write some BS in which u know nothin about.

To the woman who is going through the methadone maintenace with her child, I am going through the same thing with my wife right now. We were very heavy users, and we eventually both got into this methadone maintenance program. since we have done, we have pretty much stuck to the program. both of us function much better and much more normally now that we are off heroin. but we were just recently, last month, caught off gaurd with what i call the biggest miracle kick in the ass. my wife went to the E.R. late one night when i was actually working, and when i got off work that morning, I had went by my mothers house to say hi before i went and dosed. well being that my cell phone was off, my wife called my moms and told her she had gone to the hospital the previous night because of horrible stomach pains, and it turned out she was 8 months pregnant with our new beautiful baby girl virginia. she was having her slightly premature. ok ok ok, i know what you are saying... "what do you mean she went to the hospital with pains and blah blah blah?!" well.... my wife has had an irregullar menstrual cycle since we started dating when we were 12 (we are 24 now). she had actually not even had a period for the last 14 months, and she was at very low chance of ever even getting pregnant. how did we not know? due to some unknown cause, she had only barely enough amniotic fluid in her placenta to keep the baby alive... she never showed until literally 3 days before she had the baby.... 3 days before, i finally said "honey, i think you might be prego, you should get a test". 3 days later, she had a 5lb 11oz baby. the last two months have been so hard though because she has been in the hospital... her detox has been so bad.... do you have any input on how to make her feel better. its mainly the gas that is caused by dt's. I just want her to come home. by the way, you are totally right about the f*****g b***h that wrote that comment about getting off MMT. Detox causes uterus contractions that cause miscarriage. what a dumb b***h... and if she still nods, then she is only on MMT to get high. all i know is that I am on it because all other forms of treatment... and i mean ALLL..... have failed.. and i am a neurosurgical nurse. I cant afford to be banging heroin. it helps me to lead a normal life instead of ending up on the street which i was so close to doing. I am on 135 mgs and that doesent even get me through the day. i spend the last part sick, but i look at it as at least i got to spend most of the day feeling normal. anyways, any advice?

are you sure its methadone and not "meth"? I am no doc but I have never heard of a child born into withdrawals from mehadone. however if it is methadone than given my exp with methadone (been on for 4 years and today coincidentally is my first day off) than your child will be miserable 24/7 not eat or sleep at all. normally I would say look for loose stools but its a baby! if they are in fact addicted get help for them froma professional asap because addiction withdrawal in adults can kill! not to scare yu but be careful if these baby's are addicted keep in mind they had no choice in the matter and I hope you have alot of patience. please keep me posted because I have 2 kids and never want them to go through what I have. I will prey for them and you!!!

Knowledge is power...isn't that why we're here?

It is horriable he was beautiful and suffering .5 wk old.Baby Haden is going to be laid to rest today. My sister was never addicted to herion and the clinics give her methadone. She was addicted to loritabs.*Dah* Dr.s of METHADONE CLINICS~HOW ABOUT LOCK UP IN REHAB? Dr.s said, he had sleep apnea instead of the truch /addiction.Methadone is killing babies and parents .Now let me guess my sister is going to get a higher dose right ? But, you better not deliver a CRACK/HERION baby or we'll take it from you and charge you .What is the difference ? I want to know. NONE. My sister is Never comming off .......The governmant is profitting RIGHT???? I can't believe your ignorance on this subject and the vile inacuracies you are spewing. Methadone is very helpful to individuals who take the program seriously. while in treatment and individual should be going to group meeting and meeting with counselors, not to mention abstainging from other drugs!!! Methadone treatment is just like anyother treatment in that it will only work if the addict truly wants to get better, the difference is if they don't then they don't have to go throught the terrible withdrawl symptoms if they choose to get high. The government strictly regulates Methadone treatment but addicts are used to "working" the system. I havent used since the day I walked into treatment, but I know many people who continue to use while "trying to get help". Monthly and sometimes weekly drug tests are administered to everyone to ensure those who are able to take doses home with them are drug free. Of course there are ways around the tests and many addicts utilize these methods. At my clinic there are supervised tests and also mouth swabs if they think you are faking or tampering with the test.
Another question is how would the government MAKE money off of those addicted to methadone considering many patients are on government assistance to PAY for the treatment. Really if you're going to post something you should be more educated about the subject.
That being said I am very sorry for your loss. Babies should never die. It is a horrible horrible loss, but I dont think the methadone clinic OR the government is at fault.

First I want to start by saying that I think it is great that you adopted. The other person that responded has no clue what they're talking about! you asked about long term effects and all they did was describe their experiance with withdrawal. Babies that are born to methadone dependent mothers are treated right at the hospital before they are sent home. They are usually put on a very low dose of morphine or phenobarbital if they are experiancing any withdrawals. Every baby is different and it has nothing to do with how much methadone the mom was on. Once they're dose is captured, the doctors will gradually ween when appropriate until the baby is stablized. Sometimes they will send them home on some type of medication, like phenobarbital, for a short period of time. My daughter was sent home on a very low dose of pheno barb and is doing excellent. There are really no long term effects. There hasn't been alot of research done on the matter so resources are scearse. Its really more about the type of enviroment they are in. As long as they are brought into a safe and drug-free enviroment everything will be just fine. Look into a service called Early Intervention. They come right to your house and work with you and your child. They assess your child's developmental abilities and can pin point certain abnormalities. They are wonderfully helpful. I hope I maybe helped you a little or gave some insight. I wish you much luck in this new year. Take good care,

Youve never heard of a baby with methadone withdrawals-seriously???

I had my daughter who is now 8 while on methadone and she was fine didnt have any withdrawals at all, i goy pregnant again last year and had a little boy 7 wks ago and im still on methadone but i assumed that hed be the same as my daugher but unfortunatly 11 days after he was born he went into bad withdrawals, he would feed more than 10mls per bottle and stopped altogether, his stools were like water and he wouldnt sleep more than 10 mins without waking up screaming and he was sratching his face and wringing his little fingers it was horrible to see- heartbreaking- so me and his dad brought him back to the hospital he was born in and they brought him up to the i.c.u and assessed him they then gave him oramorph its morphine for babies. i held him in his little room in the i.c.u until the morhine kicked in i felt his little body relax and he went into a deep sleep and i had to go home and leave him there, he started off on the oramorph (0.2mls) every 3 hours until he was stable then he was reduced to getting it every 4 hours, then every 6 hours (that was the worst) then 8 hours, 12 hours then one final dose on 24 hourly then it was stopped altogether.

It took 3 weeks exactly to get him weaned off the morphine and even then the 1st week at home he was a bit shakey but hes off it just over 2 weeks now and hes thriving, he had lost more than 15% of his body weight he was born 8lbs6 and went down to 7lbs2 and he back up to 9lbs4 now.

As far as i know there are no long term effects to the withdrawal, my daughter must have had mild withdrawals that even the docs didnt notice but shes a lovely bright 8 yr old now, and the baby is just like any contented little baby now- all i can say is do not have kids while on methadone as it is the worst possible thing to watch your child going through that and the guilt is unbearable, i stayed in the hosp 24/7 as much as poss but ive an 11 yr old son and my daughter at home so had to split the time and he wasin hosp all over christmas and new year, thank god its over now.

Im sure your babies are fine now as this post is quite old but hopefully theyre thriving now :D

I also have a baby in the hospital now an hes not doing so well today but he did have his circumsision yesterday. I dont know if thats why hes been so cranky today. But just looking at him knowing its my fault he feels this way kills me slowly an I so deserve it. I am detoxing now after i have seen what I did an I want to b a good mom. I am so sorry I had a baby on methadone. I was going to the clinic for years before I got prego an I had no choise to stay on the clinic when I found out I was haveing a baby. But before today he was actually doing great. They do something with addicted babies called a finagan score an most babies stay at a 2 or 3 but my baby was at a 8 the day before yesterday an for a addicted baby thats really good they can go home at a 10. But like today an last night he has been crying an they had to move up his methadone. Yeah they give him methadone an will start to move him down at a slow rate probable next week it takes 10 weeks to take them off it completely I hope for all of u that dont know what to do u need to call an ask some doctors close to u if they have had to deal with babies addicted before then choose one to help u out.
Plz pray for my baby his name is Kainan

Not all babies withdraw but enough do to make it worthwhile to say don't get pregnant on methadone. I am a healthcare professional who has treated many babies during withdrawal. They are also at increased risk of SIDS. They may exhibit withdrawal symptoms at 3-4 weeks after birth. Also, they do have issues with jaundice and need to be watched closely. This is not an innocuous drug people. It can and will affect your child. It is safe to breast feed because not much of the drug crosses into breast milk.

My daughter just had her first child, my first grandchild on 2/12/09. The baby was born addicted to methadone as my daughter was receiving meds via a clinic for a previous heroin addiction. Baby still in NICU as she was also a preemie. She did not show signs of withdrawal until 4-5 days later as her scores started to go up. They are treating her with little morphine on pacifier. She is not a real agitated baby. Does not cry a lot and eats well now. I was just wondering how long these babies have to stay in the hospital. My daughter was not on a high methadone dose. She has friends via the clinic who where in same situation and the babies were not even born addicted. That is so confusing to me that one baby can be fine and the other not. My daughter is at the hospital most of the time with her child and really starting to get major seperation anxiety as well as feeling so so guilty for doing this to her baby. I feel sorry for babies that have to go thru this experience, but as a mom, I love my children unconditionally and know she will love this baby with all her heart :-(

I know of a person who lives (but now does not) in my area and has now gone to jail for giving her baby methadone from birth, she bottle fed her baby with methadone mixed in the milk, for 6 months before the hospital found out about it, eventhough the baby had been admitted to hospital on several ocassions, obviously they did not check her blood as they did not have a reason to and had never heard of a case of a woman doing such a thing. I was looking on this forum to see what effects it could have on the baby as I am worried.
