I had my Gb out on the 2nd november 2016, i was abit sore for a week after my surgery but when my dressings were off i was fine untill 12th November, i went out for a steady walk and fresh air but in the evening i inherited this infamous back pain on my upper right hand side of my rib cage, infact its exactly oppersite were my Gb was. It does go away untill 1pm then starts to irritate me untill i lie on my left hand side. Not sure if its scar tissue being a pain as they burn your Gb off your liver.? Or pressure build up in your liver?

Hi I had my gallbladder out a week and two days ago. I am now having pain in my back/on my side. It is the same side where my gallbladder was. I just wondering how you made out?

Hi: I had terrible, unrelenting upper back and chest pain after my gallbladder was removed last October, like a knife going through my sternum and radiating through to my back on both sides of my spine. It was so bad within the first week after surgery that not even the vicodin they sent me home with could touch the pain. I went back to the hospital fully expecting to be readmitted with some kind of serious complication, only to be told, after basic bloodwork, that nothing at all was wrong with me and what i was feeling was "just normal, post-operative discomfort" that would go away "in a couple weeks." Well, it certainly didn't feel "normal" and it didn't go away in a couple weeks; I also had dull, intermittent pain in my URQ, where the surgery was done. Like you, all of my MRIs, X-rays, HIDA scans, bloodwork, etc. came back "normal" - with the exception of ascites (unidentified fluid) being seen on both of the MRIs in the area where the surgery was done. My GI identified this fluid as a small amount of bile that either spilled during the surgery or came from a microscopic bile leak that had resulted from the surgery - either way, it caused something called "bile peritonitis," or severe inflammation of the tissues lining your abdominal cavity. When that fluid moves around, it can cause pain in any of the tissues exposed to it, and can also pool in the back of your upper abdomen when you lie down (which is why you feel so much pain in your back). In all the hours I searched the web for information on the source of my pain, i found very little information about bile spillage during gallbladder removals or bile peritonitis of this type (usually, bile leaks and pile peritonitis are so severe that patients can become septic and go into shock - the more minor leaks and inflammation, while extremely painful, don't seem to warrant much discussion or treatment, as they eventually heal and go away on their own as the body absorbs the leaked bile and the surrounding tissues heal). Here are the things that have helped me with the pain over the past 3 months:
-- microwaveable heating pad, used daily on my chest and back - especially helpful to sleep with at night
-- non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like Advil, Aleve and Mobic (if your stomach can tolerate them - mine really can't, and these were only minimally helpful at best, so I hardly used them)
-- back stretches and massage on the trigger points where your pain is the worst
-- acupuncture (focusing on the upper back and the URQ)
-- foods and supplements high in anti-inflammatory properties (easy to find many of these by googling the topic);
--ask your doctor about an anti-spasmodic like Bentyl or Levsin, which can help if the muscles in your back are spasming from the inflammation.
My GI told me within the first two weeks after surgery that this complication would take 3-4 months to heal; as i write this today, I am exactly between 3 and 4 months and have noticed a significant turning point in the last week in terms of the pain in both my back and URQ. None of this information is intended to be, or to substitute for, professional medical advice, but I truly hope that it proves helpful to you and anyone else out there who may be suffering from awful back pain after gallbladder surgery- don't lose hope, and don't stop asking for answers from your health care providers!

I had GB removed 2 weeks ago. Have developed severe pain in stomach and lower back pain as well. It's so intense at times that it's unbearable. I told my surgeon. He says things take time and released me telling me to go see my PCP dr. My PCP dr says something is definitely wrong as to why I am still in so much pain. Said my surgeon passing me over to him is ridiculous. He doesn't know what's wrong or what to do. He has referred me to a GI dr. I'm really pretty scared at this point.

I had my gall bladder out on 26th January 2017 and after surgery my back on the right upper side was swollen and very sore to the touch, its been three weeks now and i've still got the pain in my upper right back and also pain under my right rib where the pain was before I had my gall bladder removed. Can anyone help with what the pain may be and does it ever go away, its silly because I had the operation to get rid off the pain but its back with a vengeance. I am in the progress of changing doctors because I have moved, Does anyone think I need to see the doctor ??
