I have the same problem, back pain after drinking. I have suffered from ddd, or degenerative disc disease, or athritis in my low back for years, as documented by MRI. The reason it is worse after drinking alcohol is simple, dehydration. There is a 24 hour cycle that your discs in your back go through. At night they "rehydrate", or absorb fluids, and all day long, while under compression, these discs tend to compress and dehydrate. Some docs refer to this as the "tide in tide out effect". The trick to treating chronic back pain is to increase the "tide in effect", and minimize the "tide out effect". Drinking alcohol only serves to dehydrate your body, hence the hangover. Other things that cause this are salt, coffee, caffeine, sodas that contain either. I use an inversion table to help "decompress" after a long day on my feet. Still an alcoholic though. I guess sooner or later the pain will get so bad that it just won't be worth it to drink. Good luck to all, Steve

I am 24 years old and have been experiencing back pain while drinking alcohol. I haven't always had this pain while drinking...it's only started within the past year or so. I went to the doctor today about it and they all looked at me like I was insane. I felt so incredibly stupid. They may as well have laughed right in my face. The woman made me pee in a cup and do a pregnancy test!!!! She didn't know what to tell me it was, so it seemed like she just came up with something off the top of her head. She tried to tell me there is some kind of spasm in my throat that happens when I drink alcohol that causes the back pain! WHAT?!?! They told me I just need to stay away from alcohol...which is fine...I don't need alcohol to survive...I just want to know if there is some underlying problem as to why this has been happening. Everything I have been researching also leads to Hodgkins disease. I don't have a clue what to do now. My husband thinks I am overreacting and being paranoid. If someone could please let me know what to do next it would be greatly appreciated!!! >:(

Pancreatitis causes severe pain that radiates to the back. Common causes of pancreatitis are gallstones and heavy alcohol use.

I too have the same problem. My lower back kills me the morning after I've been drinking. My only thought is that perhaps it knocks me out so much, that I don't change positions while sleeping and my back gets achy as a result. Who knows. Don't feel like going to a doctor to ask.

crazy. the same thing happens to me. it's only ever after drinking something with a lot of sugar in it. i don't have any unusual back pain otherwise. it'll start right after i finish a drink, maybe my second or third. it's like a intense persistent pain (not acute or throbbing at all) in between my clavicle and scapula on either side. if it's really bad, it will spread across the whole inside of my very upper chest. it only goes away if i throw up and/or take an antiacid.

i'm NOT at all a frequent or binge drinker. i do get heartburn fairly frequently, so i've assumed it was just the acidity of certain drinks or maybe a bad reaction to a certain artificial sweetener or something.

are there any other infrequent drinkers who experience this?

The greatest answer is that most of you have back pain you repress. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions and you are less likely to be able to repress the pain you NORMALLY have.. A physician once told me this when I asked him the same question. He said he believed I was a chronic back pain sufferer when I told him this concern.

Now, this is not to suggest there aren't other possible causes, but for those of you with chronic back problems like me, alcohol can intensify the pain unless you get completely bombed.

The second to last post answered it all, drink water before you drink alchol. Not too much though. dont want anyone to over-hydrate.

I also have scoliosis and get an ache in my lower back after heavy nights out.
It feels like an organ ache rather than scoliosis/muscle ache, so I always assumed it was just my kidney protesting to the copious amounts of wine and then being flooded with water to try and sober up. Who knows though maybe there is a connection?

I have the same problem. When I drink red wine, my lower back hurts two days later. It is not my kidneys, but I'm sure it has to do with the uric acid. When I drink only scotch there is no such problem. It hurts in the vertebrae where many years ago I hurt my back. You all should ask yourself if the pain is where you once got hurt. I'm certain that it is a chemical reaction which peaks 24-48 hours after drinking the red wine. The way I help it is by drinking about a liter of water a day more than I would as soon as I see the onset of the pain. I'm going to also try to drink something alkaline and see if that helps. -Migs

Hi,
I am 42 and I get the same thing happen to me. I have had back problems since I was 20 and I have discovered over the years that the day after drinking alcohol I have muscle pain/shooting pains and spasms in my upper back and also up into my shoulders and neck! Ocassionally, I suffer with migraines that has been brought on by the neck pain.

Yep I drink regularly and suffer from back pain in the of my back and slightly to the right but it seems to move around a little particularly if I go on a bender. It never hurts when I'm sitting in a comfortable position or in bed. I think I'll give up the booze for a while and see what happens. Easier said than done when your Irish.
