I started having that problem at about 50 yrs old. I am a female and if I only drink beer I am ok . If I sip on a shot of something - like schnapps with the beer I am OK.But if I drink liquor ( unless it is very slooowly)- my upper middle back will hurt.bad.. But if I drink a bottle of water after about 5 minutes it will ease off and go away.. I don't know why this has started but I hope this helps you.
I have found this page after drinking vodka and coke and having the worse upper back pain ever. Its not the first time it's happened either. Back story, im 25 I had motorcycle accident a few years ago and now have arthritis I'm both shoulders and a undiagnosed lower back pain. Its at least the second time and the pain is so bad I have to get a boiling hot shower. Both times I have been on my pc and drinking vodka and coke.
I've noticed recently that when I drink my neck and back pain gets MUCH worse. I started drinkng because of the pain but now it causes it. I would like to know why alcohol is causing the worst pain.
When I take alcohol with ice on next day getting this upper back pain. Without ice no problem faced.
Hey body! I think that it has something to do with the kidney because I was born with only one and it hurts so bad when I drink and don't eat.
That's so freakin weird I get the same thing & have always had that happen when I first start drinking. After the about the 2nd drink my upper back starts aching across my shoulders too. I'm 31yo female. I have always wondered what the hell causes it, but if I keep drinking it gets better. So odd!
I had same problem turns out I had kidney stones. See a doctor they are no joke...
im 15 and i drinck probably too much but sometimes wen i do i get reely bad pain in my chest and upper back
thank you soooo much!!! this was genuinely helpfull as fk
I have this issue in my middle back. My mother in-law told me to use a heating pad on my back AND BELLY. Even if I just use it on my belly I feel relief. She told me it is heart burn. However, Rolaid's, Tum's, and Pepto do not help me, the heating pad has.
I had my gallbladder out last year and that also caused backpain, instead of stomach pain.
Middle back pain, for me, is seemily associated with belly irritaions under my ribs.
The heating pads work!!!
I used to make myself throw up, it hurt so bad i was desperate, when I would drink 1-2 times a month. In about ten minutes I would have relief and be able to drink again with no further problems. If I waited it out 10 munutes the same time passed before relief. As I got older, I am 34 now and this problem started when I was 26, it was more often.
I am still having this issue, however, the heating apd or rice bags work for me.
I believed I had an alochol allergy back then, I still feel I do. I feel it causes me pain to drink, but I enjoy drinking once a month or every other weekend with friends.
I used to believe I was dehydrated. I would prep for a drinking night and drink water prior and with each drink to no avail.
I still feel like I can "feel" my middle spine dehydate when I do drink. However, again, the heating pads seem to work to knock] pthat pain out.

Did your back symptoms come and go when you drink alchol from time to time?
Since I wrote my post it happened once since. Been able to drink multiple times without any issues.
It seems to have been over a year since this posted. I was searching for some information on this for my wife. These symptoms started for her a couple of years ago. We have narrowed it down to sweet Alcoholic drinks with Red Food coloring. Now we always ask if a drink has red food coloring or Grenadine (simple syrup and red food coloring) and if so, ask to substitute cranberry juice or pomegranate juice and it seems to work. One time she asked for a "Bahama Mama" with a cranberry substitute. It came back very red and I wanted to question the waitress, which I did not. She took a sip and had the reaction. It happened again last night. We asked about a drink and was told that it did not have red in it, but our friend got a drink that was red and she wanted to try it. I told her we did not ask about that one. Turns out it did have it. Needless to say, she had a reaction So we stay away from red food coloring and alcohol.
As far as red wine goes, she does drink some, but very little and no reaction. I have a friend who had the reaction with red wine and it turned out to be a gallbladder issue. Once it was removed, she did not have the issue any longer.
Ironically, My wife has had a couple of tests on her gallbladder and it comes back as low, but within a normal range. Removal could be a solution. I had mine removed for pain and spasms I was having in the front upper right abdomen. I continue to have a slight uncomfortable feeling where it resides, so I recommended to her not to do it.
We think it is all attributed to red food coloring/dye and Alcohol. There are some articles that support this, but the gallbladder seems to be common as well.
