Hiyield, Would you still go back to Dr. Miller and Vanderbilt? I am scheduled to see her in mid-September.
I have been on the HoLep Experiences thread for almost 2 years now and someone just pointed out this one. I had my HoLep done in December 2012 - and best decision I ever made). It was done at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia by Dr. Akhil Das. My dentist referred me to him. Dr. Dar and Dr. Lingerman (who seems to get the most exposure) are both at tiop of their field and co-wrote articles. Medicare covered 100% of my surgery too. If anyone is on this thread and has any further questions about it or Dr. Das, just post here or search for the discussion group"Experiences with Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate, HoLEP, Laser Surgery" where yiu will find most of us who had the surgery.
I am scheduled with Dr. Lingeman on Sept 26- HoLEP. I live in KY as we'll. I will post on this site on my progress.
I am updating my information on HOLEP as I help a good friend. I was searching on Dr Lingeman for his latest information and this post came up. I realize I am a year late, but perhaps it will help someone.
I did extensive research in 2006 as local (Dayton/Cincinnati OH) docs were all medicating for prostates 100cc and larger, and all were falling back on the "gold standard" TURP. None, as in zero, had heard of HOLEP. I did not like the statistics on TURP and fed up with medication that had side effects that kept me in state of nearly constant sinus infection. I found HOLEP and Dr Lingeman. After reading his technical papers and everything I could, I sent an email to his address. I had a response in less than 3 hours and telephone conversation with his medical assistant right after that. I also received direction to come visit in the morning and if both Lingeman and I were agreeable surgery would be in the afternoon.
I did, left the hospital the next day. It is the best single medical procedure I have ever had. It was life changing. I was 68 at the time and had been suffering from BPH for more than 20 years. I had no problems, and no changes in life style except retrograde ejaculation which has reduced the mess my wife has to deal with following intercourse. I am now 76 years old and still peeing like a horse and have no sexual problems. I recommend the procedure and Dr Lingeman completely.
A good friend and dental specialist once told me he and his family only goes to doc's that practice, teach, research and publish. That fits Dr Lingeman perfectly. You can't beat that combination, institution or not. As far as his investment in the equipment it's my experience one does not invest in something one does not believe in. If my memory serves me it is Dr Lingeman that went to New Zealand to learn of the procedure, brought it to the states, making continued improvements all the while.
A note on Indianapolis--I just received what I consider to be life saving surgery at hospital in Indianapolis. I had triple by-pass surgery in Dayton OH. The doc really screwed up in the way he opened my sternum. There was not enough bone left on one side to reattach to the other side. A second surgery by the same Dayton doc, only made things worse with sternum breaking up laterally within 3 weeks. I found Dr Marc Gerdisch in Indianapolis, who by the way researches, teaches internationally, etc who used a technique and equipment developed in Italy that has given me a strong sternum. Left alone as the Dayton doc suggested and a piece of sternum could have penetrated the heart. So, for me, Indianapolis medical practice looks mighty fine.
I agree 100% re: Dr. Lingeman. I have only praise. Simply the best with the greatest skill-that is why people fly in from France and England to see Dr. Lingeman. Great bed side manner and competent.

Yes, she just did mine this week. So far so good.
Yes my Husband just had the HoLep surgery done By Dr. Michael Dusing He is in Northern Ky. He is the only doctor this area. The next closest is in Cleveland Ohio. Dr, Dusing is so caring of his pts. He is young and very up to date on what he does. He takes very much pride in doing this technique. He even called my husband twice after he came home from the hosp. to check on him. We went to him and he didn't waist any time doing the surg. I know we are spelling it two different ways but I know it is the same surgery. I just seen you wrote this a year ago. I hope you got your problem taken care of.

I don't know of any DR that does HoLEP in Cleveland. I just returned from Vanderbilt-Nashville and had the procedure done by Dr. Nicole Miller. Her and staff are wonderful.
Just had holep on11/12/14 by Dr Lingeman. Holep on 12th released on 13th, flew home to Florida on 15th. Have had 2 major surgeries the last 4 years( back fusion and bypass) and only say my experience with Dr. Lingeman, his staff and the personnel of Methodist was far better than anything I have experienced in the past( considering prior experiences were excellent). Unfortunately it was required to have my urethra widened to prevent strictures so I am experiencing bleeding when urinating(told to expect this with healing to take awhile). Some dribbling (expected) but no pain and a little burning(hardly noticeable). Prostate was over 130 grams and experienced chronic prostintitis since I was 22 (now 67). 3 biopsies and 1 3DMRI all negative with psas of 10-12 prior to holep. Within 1 day notified removed tissue was neg. for cancer (thank God,definetely a concern). My recommendation to anyone considering this procedure is go to the Dr who pioneered this procedure in the US and taught almost all of the Drs who do it today. Keep you posted on future recovery.
Thanks for the great report. It might be a good idea to give yourself a screen name just so we can respond more personally to you. Only takes a moment. But your option of course. Keep us posted and if any of we "veterans" can help guide you, just ask! We don't go away after we are cured.
Username is SgtSteve. Will do updates as I progress. Thanks for responding to my initial post.
Hi Steve (like that name). Are yiu aware that there is another thread on Steady Health which is more active and there are a lot of folks there who would probably like to see yiur post. It is called"Experiences with Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate, HoLEP, Laser Surgery" . Check it out.
Congratulations on your experience with Dr. Lingeman. I noticed that you were released on the 13th but didn't fly back to Florida until the 15th. Were you advised to not travel the day you were released? I was wondering because I will be having surgery with Dr. Lingeman in a few weeks and was planning on riding back as a passenger in a vehicle for a 300 mile trip and was wondering if I could do it on the day I was released from the hospital. Do you know how long the actual surgery took for your 130 gram prostate to be reduced in size?
Don't recommend driving same day as release. Dr's office told me to stay extra night at motel(Sleep Inn-1 mile from hospital) in case any complications arise. Surgery took only 90 minutes. Nice if your car s a van where u can put your feet up(hopefully your not driving). Expect bleeding and leakage, all normal. Pickup some absorbent pads for men (walmart)' you will definitely need them. Walking everyday, bleeding less and less and continence getting better. Don't stress out about surgery, not a bad experience at all and post op problems are just inconveniences. Good luck, let me know how u do.
Had my surgery in Oct. at Vanderbilt Medical. I would recommend staying a day as well. Remember, you have had a major surgery. I road back from Nashville to Cleveland 2 days later. Make sure you stop about every 1 1/2 to 2 hours and do some walking in a Walmart or mall. Good luck.
