Well i am supposed to be having a sigmoidoscopy next week, but i think i am going to bottle out. I have had episodes of bleeding just under 9 years. I am scared and really do not know what to do. It all started when i got a bout of diarrhea with really bad stomach cramps, when i went to flush i noticed bright red blood in my poo thought i would be okay, but had to keep rushing back to the loo to go again, but all that came out was blood and mucous. This went on for a whole day bed ridden really bad stomach cramps and just passing blood. Bright when i wiped and blood mixed with mucous at the bottom of the toilet, sometimes quite a lot. Then it would go as quickly as it came, Only lasting for a day.... Then the cramps would go, I knew it was going and then life would resume again. I could go about 2 years and then it would come back again. The episodes being exactly the same, bleeding cramps, and just passing blood. I have had it for 9 years, it comes and goes i just do not know what to do. Supposed to go for test friday, but scared of perforated bowel among other things. So depressed with it all.

Hello. Based on your description, there are several potential causes for rectal mucus and bleeding:

1. Hemorrhoids: Swollen blood vessels in the rectum or anus can cause mucus and bleeding. They can be internal (inside the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus).

2. Anal fissures: Small tears in the lining of the anus can cause bleeding and sometimes mucus discharge.

3. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): Conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis can cause inflammation in the intestine and rectum, leading to mucus and blood in the stool.

4. Infections: Certain infections can cause mucus and blood in the stool.

5. Colon polyps or cancer: Growths in the colon or rectum can lead to blood and mucus in the stool. If this has been ongoing for a year, it's important not to ignore it.

6. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): While IBS typically does not cause bleeding, it can cause mucus in the stool.

7. Diverticular disease: Diverticulosis and diverticulitis involve the formation of small pouches in the colon, which can sometimes lead to bleeding.

Given your symptoms, it's crucial to see a healthcare professional, preferably a gastroenterologist, for a proper evaluation. They can conduct the necessary tests, such as a colonoscopy, to determine the cause and suggest the appropriate treatment.

If you notice any of the following, you should seek medical attention immediately:

- Dizziness or lightheadedness (may indicate significant blood loss).
- Severe abdominal pain.
- Black, tarry stools.
- Sudden, severe diarrhea or vomiting.
