So how did it go? What has been your experience post-op?
I just had bunion surgery 3 weeks ago and, so far so good. I am experiencing some tingling and "pins and needles" under my cast...did you have that?

I have had bunions for ever and now I'm 27. They do cause me pain and I'm looking into getting the surgery done on both at the same time (due to time off work restraints!!). I'm prepared for the pain and the cost if necessary but my biggest concern is which surgeon do I trust? Can anyone reccommend a surgeon or surgery in England? I don't want them coming back!!
Also are there any other treatments rather than just sawing through the toe, it just doesn't seem natural to be only left with half a toe!!

Hi! I had the bunion in my left foot removed last Thursday. I had general anesetha and surgery lasted about 1.5 hrs. I did feel pain Friday afternoon/night, resulting in me taking 2 painkillers...BUT, I took my last pain killer Saturday morning. I'm still walking on crutches and there is some swelling, but I'm not in pain, just a bit uncomfortable. I will say this: I am NOT having the bunion on my right foot removed (unless it causes me pain like the left foot) As for having them both done at tthe same time, it is illegal b/c I was actually considering doing that. How happy I am that I didn't/couldn't! good luck..you'll be fine.
Hi all,
I have done my bunion ops. It is not that bad afterall. I was under General Anesthesia for about an hour. I was hospitalised for 2 nights. I took painkillers for three days. You will need it otherwise you will be awakened by the pain.
However, my big toe is still slanted to the 2nd toe. My bunion is gone. My surgeon did not want to insert the screws into big toe. He tried not to unless it is really necessary. Think is because of the complications. I am supposed to wear a splint in between my big and 2nd toe to straighten my big toe in future until it straighten. Afterall, it took many years for it to develop into the condition.
Now I am into the third week of recovering and feeling very bored. This operations requires a lot of patience and is preferable that there is someone at home to take care of you in the first week especially because you have to be on clutches.

It hurts. The local anesthetic wears off in a few hours, by then you're home with your foot up in the air in a cast. For the first day or so, it hurts to walk on it, and just having the foot down hurts. It gets better over the first week. You have to move your big toe, too, and that hurts. It varies with the type of bunion surgery and how much is done. By the time the stitches come out in a couple of weeks, you're dying for a shower. Buy one of those waterproof vacum cast bags, and you can shower sooner. Don't plan to do too much that first week, catch up on your reading. Vidiotapes or books on tape help the first few days when you're half stoned from the pain meds. Good luck!
I am having bunions removed on both feet on 26th Feb and really found all of your letters interesting but I am still undecided as to still have the operation. I am not too bothered about the pain (perhaps I should be!). I am more worried about the bunions coming back, what are the chances of that, does anyone know? I will not have the procedure done with a local anesthetic, as the injections are just too painful. I had carpul tunnel surgery a year ago like this and would not recommend it to any one, make sure you are asleep!!
I must add, the bunions are not causing me any pain or discomfortl yet, as I am wearing comfortable shoes. However I know if I don't have the operation, they might just get worse and painful.
I look forward to your comments, wish me luck!

really bad pain only the first night--hobbling around on surgical shoe but no biggie.
I did not have the surgery with the screws though- just shaving off the bone on the 5th metatarsil (little toe)
I would do it again-really not bad.

Hi I had my op 5 weeks ago, in Hereford, England. The op took 1.5 hrs and I had two pins. The painkillers and anti-inflammatory tablets worked really well. Hardly felt any pain and stopped taking tablets after 3 days. Could walk with crutches and special shoe after that. After first week did the toe moving exercises that the surgeon told me to do. Scar healed really well and after 3 weeks I was wearing lace up shoes, starting with 1/2 hour a day building up to several hours. My foot is still puffy if I am on my feet too long so I just elevate it with an ice pack on it. Stick to what your surgeon tells you and it will be OK. Good luck
Hello I'm only 13 and i had a bunion operation done about 7 weeks ago :-( . I was really scared but when i woke up my foot was numb. But when i got home the pain kicked in and the pain killers wore not much help and it was unbarable the pain. I couldn't walk and got really scared i could never walk again . I was walking on my heal for about 3-4 days . Then finally i found my footing and i used the croutches alot they was a BIG help. The pain is really bad and my foot is really swollen still after 7 weeks but just remeber if your in pain that it will not last forever and the feeling of getting that cast off :-D Now i can walk like i use too and run and do everything really but just cant kick a ball yet! :-(
My friends & family was really supportive. So you should be fine =] Also my scar has bearly gone :-D

Lots of pain and lots of swelling so far... along with numbness. I must be crazy for in less than 48 hours I am going to have it done again. Been taking pain killers every 6 - 8 hours. That's probably the only reason why I going back - clouded judgement!
It has been 8 weeks since I had bunion surgery. I still have difficulty wearing a shoe and if I walk too much I am in a lot of pain. Is this normal?
Hello everyone! I had surgery to correct a severe bunion a week and a half ago and things still hurt like crazy. Keep in mind that two separate bones had to be broken and reassembled using two screws, three wires, and a small metal plate. As a result, there is still significant swelling anytime I lower my foot. The only thing that's really bothering me is the touch-sensitive really red skin over the top portion of the rest of my foot. I hope it's not getting infected or something. I'd like to at least be mobile within three weeks or so. The pain killers seem to keep things at bay so long as I keep up with them and don't let the pain get a head start. My best to everyone, and hopefully I have better things to report later on in this process. Oh, and I'm 31 to keep things in perspective.
Hi all
I had my left bunion removed about 7 yrs ago and it was hell when i woke up after the op , I actually cried like a baby , however that was the only real pain i felt since , the procedure was done to perfection , a small bone was removed between the big toe and the next and a opening on the side . I had to wear the plaster for about 3 months up to the hip to ensure that I do not put too much pressure on the foot plus I had the crutches . It healed very nicely and I am now planning to go for the right bunion to be removed . :$

I just had bunion surgery on my right foot yesturday afternoon.... I am in so much pain it's barely bearable! The percocet just isn't cutting it. Oh well, I'm hoping it gets easier over the next few days. My big toe is still numb and the bone beneath it is THROBBING. Yikes!
I'm 27 y.o. female who wears heels and works on my feet. I'm also an avid runner and flatfooted. The bunions were just bound to happen!
