I WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS BEFORE MY SURGERY. I HAVE NERVE DAMAGE NOW AND DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO.... I AM IN NURSING SCHOOL AND NOW IT IS HARD FOR ME TO STAND ON MY FEET FOR MORE THAN 5 HOURS !!! How am I going to stand on my feet for an 8 hour or 12 hour shift ! What can I do ??? please help !
Your situation sounds very similar to mine- I thought I was having "some pins" but woke up to screws in all 10 toes!
yes, I had lapidus plate surgery 9 weeks ago and my big toe does not touch the ground. The Doc said to keep pushing the big toe toward the ground. I also have shooting pains on the right side of the foot shooting up to the big toe. Went for another opinion and will have a CAT scan of the foot in NYC. I can walk but the side of my foot is so sensitive, even a sheet causes pain. I am miserable. I also had hammertoe surgery which is OK but looks like a mini sausage. He said the swelling will subside. I also has to have another surgery 2 weeks ago to remove a pin which became dislodged! I wish I just lived my severe bunion and hammertoe but I could only wear sneakers; no other shoes so I opted for the surgery. let me know how you are doing. _[removed]_
Same situation. I also had a pin removal and thought that was the cause of the nerve pain but no, it was not. I can barely put a sheet on top of my foot, it is bad. had lapidus surgery 9 weeks ago. nightmare!
I had a lapidus procedure done over a year and half ago and I still get pains in my foot. I can't wear certain shoes and at times I have to wear enclosed shoes as sandals bother my foot. Weather changes still bother my foot. BUT I am jealous that your surgeons removed your hardware, mine did not and I do believe that is why I have very little toe mobility and get a lot of toe pain still. I have a lot and I do mean A LOT of scar tissue by toe. The first 3 months were the MOST painful, keep up with pain meds still if you have to, don't discard them they are still your friends even if you don't want them to be.
Good luck and I do hope you have better luck than my foot
Same position. My podiatrist does not know where the nerve pain is coming from.Even went to an ortho who specializes in foot and ankle and he does not know why either!
I second the motion. I also had bunion surgery that went wrong, went to another dr. and he put a piece of steel in my big toe so I can not bend..... Now I have BAD nerve pain and I am seeing a 3rd dr. and he prescribed a topical ointment ant that was working for over a year. Now he wants to give me 16 shots of novocaine 2 X 8 weeks, and that is supposed to tell my brain there in no pain. I'm afraid to try it, I would never have gotten it had I known. I could have lived with that pain, but this pain is terrible, I'm about ready to commit hairy-carey. DON'T DO IT!
Take my advice and do not have the surgery. I have had to have mine operated on four times and it is something I am trying to live with. If you must have the surgery, do NOT go to a podiatrist. Go to an orthopedic surgeon. By the way the fourth time I had to go from Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Birmingham, Alabama to have the fourth surgery done by an orthopedic surgeon. I did not know that a podiatrist was not a real doctor until it was too late.
Hello. I concur. I had bunion surgery six years ago. Because the doc messed it up, or I walked too soon, or there wasn't enough post physical therapy, or all of the above, my right foot will never be the same. It hurts, I have significant nerve tissue damage, numbness, tingling in the right foot. That really sucks because I am very athletic, I love yoga, I am very active and I am so sad that I will never have the same range of motion or the same feeling of balance I used to have from having two healthy, flexible, strong feet. In the end, the bunion wasn't nearly as bothersome (though very bulbous and ugly) as the permanent damage to my foot from this unnecessary surgery. Friends tried to talk me out of out... I admit, I wanted to do it for mainly vanity reasons. The bunion didn't hurt so much, but it was very large, and it embarrassed me to wear sandals. If you decide to have it done, please research it inside and out, make sure you have a very competent surgeon who really knows what they are doing. Good luck.
Your right I had same surgery had to have srew removed from big toe after surgery also got rsd can't walk been in wheel chair since may 29, 2015 also have been just dionased with neurophathy in my foot and leg hurt for any thing cold my nerve keeps jumping uncontrollably in my upper for causing me feel like I'm evening shocked don't do it I agree
I agree with you. Surgery is a very serious decision particularly on the toes. The moment a podiatrist cuts them there is not a way back. It is much better to visit an orthopedic surgeon with years of experience. Don't let a doctor who rushes you to surgery $$$ the only one will be suffering will be the innocent patient who believe that a bunion or hammer surgery is not a very serious surgery. Be careful
Podiatrist is a doctor. Look at his degree. Mine did my bunion surgery and hardware removal . Both a success . Dr j sardines palm beach fl
my wife went through a bunion surgery and no has a dead foot due to what was suppose to be simple bunion removal. Severe nerve damage followed by complex regional pain syndrome. She is now permanently crippled and be facing possible amputation. She is not alone there are many others who have been crippled for life. This is the podiatrist communities dirty little secret. The bunion surgeries are their bread and butter with regard to the risk involved. If you are considering bunion surgery please don't do it, your feet are beautiful just the way they are. Legal action is almost impossible because the podiatrist will protect each other and not go against their own. Like I said these butcherings are their bread and butter.
I was so naive and I let my podiatrist to convince my about surgery. His only motives were monetary and now that I'm in pain and suffering, she does not care about her patient.
My podiatrist operated my both feet (hammertoes, bunions, and a little bunion that suddenly she found); when, in reality, I just went for calluses that were hurting me when my shoe was rubbing my shoe. My podiatrist just took the money and run, because as you clearly said it, podiatrist are not accountable for the damage. After the damage, she rapidly disappeared and she never called me again. Operating feet is very risky, and podiatrist do not have the qualifications, and do not feel obligated to be responsible. A very bad combination, a recipe for disaster.
Foot surgeries as as delicate as hand surgery. I do not understand why they are allowing incompetent people operate feet. It is much better to see an orthopedic doctor and still it is better not to touch the feet unless one has a severe deformity to put oneself in the risks of bunions, and hammertoes operations.

I totally agree with you. I was not careful and now I am paying for my mistake with pain and suffering including regret. My podiatrist made me believe that the surgery was not a big deal. She only thought about making money. Be careful. Be careful.
