Hi, I am having a bunionectomy this Friday. I have read a lot about the prosecure and recovery. I get a lot of different answers, I am very apprehensive, but need to do something. I had the shots and it helped for about a year. I do walk a lot and my big toe pushes on my second, causing a lot of pain. I guess I have to have it done now, sense it is scheduled. I can't imagine accupuncture can actually cure a bonion, very interesting.
Wish me Luck

I had bunion surgery on my left foot two months ago and had the same surgery on my right foot one week ago. So far everything has gone great. My doctor told me to stay in bed (except for going to the bathroom) with my foot elevated and using cold therapy for the entire first week. After the first checkup at one week, I was allowed to move around more as long as I was wearing a big black protective boot. I did not put any weight on my foot at all for the first two weeks and stayed on crutches the whole time. After the second checkup at two weeks post-surgery, I was released to physical therapy and went three times a week for four weeks. I also did exercises at home every day. When I go back for my right foot, they'll also do more physical therapy on my left foot at the same time. After four weeks of physical therapy, during which time I was wearing a surgical shoe and keeping my foot wrapped with an ace bandage, I was finally released to start wearing good quality running shoes. I'm supposed to wear those for the next few months, even around home, and I've been told to not go barefoot because my foot needs the arch support that the shoes provide.
My doctor does a million of these and I was very concerned about all the horror stories you hear about bunion surgery. He said that the main cause of problems is that people don't give themselves enough time to heal and they try to get back on their feet too soon. I know it sounds a little extreme to take so much time off (I'm working from home and officing from my bed the entire time I'm on crutches), but I'm convinced that this is a big reason why I'm healing so well.
Also wanted to mention that my first scar is healing well and I don't expect it to be unsightly -- however remember that scars need extra protection from the sun!
Good luck everybody!

I had the surgery now 4 wks ago on July 31..st... hardly can see the scars..but still problems walking by days end. You absolutely need help for the first week esp. first 96 hrs... your only trip is to the bathroom. faliure to keep your feet up = pain... I had to ride in the back seat with them up until end of 3rd week.. To try an walk on your heels only means that your big toe wants to take over the balancing act... With both feet -even crutches were no help. BUT my feet look great!... Still some swelling so finding something to wear is the real challenge. I have worked out something there....and hope to paten it now for other recovery patients.
If you need both feet done... do it at the same time..or you will never return for the other as the down time...is a good 6-7 weeks.
They like to do both feet for another reason...It becomes very diff. to buy footware with only the one foot nicely shaved down... so that was reason enuf for me. Good Luck... I have some great pictures I took along recovery but not sure how to share them? If you know...let me know

I had surgery last Wednesday and I am doing great. I used a walker the first two days to get around and now I can hobble around on my own. My foot is a beautiful shade of blue, but I have no pain to speak of. They say young people recover much better than older people do, but I am 59 and not having any problems. No swelling at all. I guess the trick is to keep your foot well iced. I have a soft gel pack I use whenever I am sitting down. Good luck to those with upcoming surgeries.
Hi,
I just wanted to report that my bunion surgery was the most peaceful experience of my life. I took off the necessary 6 weeks of my summer, had both feet operated on, and enjoyed some quiet time in a wheel chair. The painkillers may have helped a little, but those six weeks were the first time I had had in years to just sit and be still and think about things. I loved it.
My advice: Don't do both feet at once, unless you are dedicated to learning how to crawl on the floor and use your upper body to lift yourself onto chairs and toilets!
(and, of course, only do the surgery if you absolutely need it)
Otherwise, there is nothing to fear!
All the best,
Young, happy, with new feet.

I had the bunions on both of my feet surgically removed at the same time. I woke up in incredible pain. It was the most pain I'd ever felt in my life.
They gave me Delaudid which did little to nothing to diminish the agony that throbbed through my feet. I couldn't walk, obviously. I was crawling everywhere for the first week, and it was quite the mission using the washroom.
After a week, I was able to put pressure on my feet and was eventually able to stabilize myself - not very well, but I managed. I was wearing the special shoes, even after my bandages were off, because it was too uncomfortable to wear anything else.
Six months later, and I'm perfectly fine with no more dealing with the pain of bunions! I don't regret the surgery but I'm certainly glad I got both done at the same time, or else I wouldn't have gone through the surgery again. It was absolutely terrible.

acupuncture would not fix bunions. it may alleviate the pain but it would never fix it. bunions are a deformity of the bone.
I am about a little over a week out of bunion surgery for the second time. I am 31 and had the same surgery on the same foot 12 years ago. My current doctor told me that my bunion was too severe for the type of procedure the first doctor decided to do. So my recent surgery was more reconstruction of my foot bones than anything else. I have had moderate pain and will be in a big, black boot for 6 wks. My doctor has warned me that I have to be extremely cautious not to bump or step wrong on my foot in fear that I may shatter my smaller bones. I am a 3rd grade teacher and will be returning to school with an understanding that I must sit and stay of my foot as much as possible. Wish me luck!!
hey, im 16 years old going on 17 in about a month. i have had bunions ever since i can remember and it has always been he most embarrassing thing for me. i hate going swimming in front of friends or even going to the beach and those are things that i love to do. anyone feel the same? how can i change this?
Quote:
omg I feel the same way- i love the beach but HATE goin there bc people will see my stupid bunions. I hide them from my boyfriend! I hate swimming and skip swim sessions at the YMCA when my triathalon team goes to train... it sucks sooo bad--- can orthopedic devices correct the bunion if worn?? Ive seen some that like wrap around your foot then pull your toe outward like a brace. Help!
I'm 18 and I had my first bunion surgery onen I was 14. One foot was so bad that my doctor told me that I might need another surgery by the time I was 18. Sure enough, I had surgery 2 weeks ago. This time was very painful. The other time I felt no pain so I don't know what is different. The first 4 days had quiet a bit of pain. :'(
Hi everyone. I'm 40 yrs. old, 12-13 hr day inpatient cancer nurse, athletic, 140 lbs, & 2.5 weeks post op left bunionectomy (screw & surgical pin). I had the procedure because as a floor nurse for so many years, I began having issues with major heel pain to go along with the bunion pain. With this pain of my left foot, some days I went all day with a limp causing right knee pain. Well, for approx. the first 4-5 days after the surgery, I couldn't bear any weight on the left foot, even with the boot. Elevating the foot with ice was a blessing. I went to the doctor today, & he removed the dressing, secured the steri-strips on the incision, & just placed a regular bandaid. The only part of my foot that is swollen is the big toe (noticable when compared to the right foot), & I have bruising across my toes & front part of my foot (which is slowly clearing). I continue to use the boot as protection & support. I will wear it when I go back to work for a while (God forbid a hospital bed or machine rolls on it. I walk almost normal now & plan to go back to work in 2.5 weeks. My scar looks like a 2 inch pencil line. I am satisfied thus far. I haven't had to take any pain medicine for a week. I'll post pictures later.
Hello! First of all, I don't consider it plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery at all! My 16 year old daughter has suffered for about 3 years with this to the point of being in constant pain when walking and unable to wear shoes without difficulty.
There is the scar lotion (I think its purple) that your doc should be able to give you samples of to help minimize the scar. It is considered to be a hereditary deformity. This is her 2nd surgery in 2 years for both feet. We had the other in another state and her doc here has looked at those records and it looks like nothing was ever done to wither foot!
He told me I might want to consider some sort of legal action. I've been doing a little research, but nothing too major yet.
I think you'll be fine at the beach! Be sure to use sun block so your scar doesn't get burnt! XD
