I am Canadian in Ontario and had bunion surgery 4 weeks ago yesterday. I'm still in cast, have a stabilizing pin on the outside of my foot and cannot put ANY weight on my foot yet!!! Maybe starting this Tuesday at my next check-up. Where did you all have yours done??? I'm seeing that some of you are hobbling, but it sounds like many of you are putting weight on your foot soon after. I use crutches, hop or crawl. I only had one foot done, and will really have to talk myself into doing my other foot.
Plus, I wonder where you all are from that you feel self conscious about scars or the appearance beforehand. I wore flip flops all the time and proudly showed off pedicures. Didn't realize that bunions were a cosmetic issue.

I am 30 years old, I have Doctor Robert Nipp for my feet. He did my foot surgery, he told me I had the feet of a 60 year old woman. He removed two different kinds of bunoins( with 5 screws put in ), Fixed two hammer toes, and removed two bone spurs ( one from heal and one from the bottom part close to my heal ), on my left foot. The surgery was about 2 hours long. I have to have the right one done too, but I am going to have it done right away instead of waiting. My right foot hurts to much to let it go any longer. I Know the recovery is long. I don't like staying home with my feet up, when I can be out with my friends, family, and/or working. Staying home was worse to me then the foot surgery its self.
I had my surgery done May 1, I was able to walk on it on the 10th of June with the sugical boot, and then the 17th I was able to wear regular shoe. I recommend getting new ones. Most of the pain from the surgery is gone but when I get to hot I can feel some pain around the screws, but my left foot feels so much better now that I have had it taken care of.
I had problems using the crutches and Dr. Nipp gave me a prescriptions for a walker with a seat. Most of the problem was do to my asthma and I have arthitis in my knees. The walker made a big difference, I put my knee on the seat and pushed my self around. On crutches I was always nervous about dropping my foot after I had all that work done, the walker changed that fear too. I crawled before I got my walker It was faster the crutches to get around.
About the scarring thing, teens can be brutal in high school. I do understand the 17 year old worrying about scars. The scars I have can be covered with straps on sandals, flip flops, and water shoes.

I am scheduled next week from both my bunions on thr left and right to be remove at the same. I am an owner of my salon and have a large clientele base im questioning about when i can go back to work with a cutting stool and assistant i estimated 2.5 week im i crazy?. i recooperate quit quickly from past surgurys and im 33 years with 2 children the pain now is unbearable some nights so i know the surgury is neccesairy and releive the back pain from copensating for the pain dr lavoie is proforming the sugrey and i am comfortable with him and his work. I also need to know what items i may not know are needed crutchs wheelchairs walkers large croc typs rubber shoes i am really wanting to be prepared for a good surgery and need tips on recovery and healing so it is productive and i can be back doing what i love to do
I dont have any pics but the scar is ugly I was told when I had mines done it would not be noticeable especially cause i was young it should heal nicely. Wrong! I dont want to scare you because as far as pain it is a 100% improvement. It just doesnt look nice and I had to learn to walk in heels again because the big toe is stiff and doesnt bend easily after the procedure. I still think it is a good surgery cause foot pain is umbearable.
I had my feet done when I was 12, right when my growth plate sealed up. I was able to walk out of the hospital that day- both times I had the surgeries done 4 months apart. I had the cast and pins and all that... I did not take one pain pill. My doc was amazing!
"im sat on the sofa now having had my surgery yesterday on my right foot ive had a proceedure that leaves a metal wire in your foot for the 6 weeks to straighten out the bones
id like to tel everybody as much as they say it doesnt hurt IT DOES!
I have been given some real strong painkillers and i dont have a low pain treashold but this is really hurting
aparently its goning to last a few at least a week and there is nothing you can do i also feel really inadaquate that i cant get to the bathroom unaided for stairs cant carry drinks or even stand long enough while a kettle boils !
id deff recommend anybody who can,rto get some help and a very sympathetic ear if your going to have this done!
good luck "
I am having my surgery done in Nov. I will be doing it with the I- Band vs. the conventional procedure. This procedure supposedly dose not mandate the cutting of the bone or inserting any screws. Instead, a biodegradable wire is inserted and wrapped around the bones. Did anyone have this procedure done?
How painful is it? How long is the recovery? I need to be back to work in two weeks and I don’t know if that’s doable.
If you have any info on this “new procedure” (also called the I band) please let me know
Thank you

Choose your surgeon well. I had my surgery on both feet October 22 and although I could walk gingerly the next day with the medical shoes on I was in allot of pain. After the bandages came off I didn't like how my feet looked as far as the stitches and sone parts of the incision were raised. I will try scar treatments to reduce the chances if bad scarring but if the skin does not smooth I may have laser surgery done. Expext the stitches to stay in 2 weeks, I get mine out this friday (thank god). Don't expect to do much for the two week recovery period, I am in very good physical shape and it was rough on me. Maybe think about doing one foot at a time if going back to work is a big issue for you. Good Luck !
Howie,
Howie,
I am a 43 year old female and I had a dual bunionectomy at age 30. My bunions were caused by a genetic defect in the bones - I was in constant paint for at least 7-8 years before I had the surgery. It was the best decision I ever made! I have been pratcially pain-free for the past 13 years! I can walk without pain again, ski without crying! My surgery was painful, but bearable. I was up walking (slowly) and back to work after 1-2 weeks, but had to wear the wooden shoes for 8 weeks and could not drive for 8 weeks. My toes are not straight - they are still angled. The surgeon put pins in (taken out after 8 weeks ?) and realigned some tendons. I don't care how my feet look as long as I can walk without pain. I've never been able to wear flip-flops. The scars on the side of the big-toe healed nicely and are not noticeable at all (of course it's been 13 years).
I remember it taking awhile before full mobility returned. I swim and had a swim meet about 3 months post-op and remember my feet being stiff on the starting block - not being able to curl my toes like I used to. But with use, the mobility returned.
If you are in pain and cannot walk, have the surgery - but do your research on surgeons and only choose an orthopedic surgeon with lots of experience in bunions.
I live in Kansas City and went to the Dickson-Dively Orthopedic Clinic.

Hi, everyone I had bunion surgery actually five days ago. I'm doing really well obviously I can't do much but I'm excited. The only reason I had mine done was because it started hurting within the past few months I would come home from work and my left foot would be throbbing from the pain of my bunion. I was also always self-consuious about it when growing up but didn't care enough to get anything done until it started hurting. My surgery took 2.3 hours and they said it usually takes an hour the real problem was the pain medication that made me sick but I'm off the pain meds after three days. I honestly don't care what the scar looks like as long as I'm not in pain anymore but I say if you have one and its pretty bad get it done while you are younger. I am worried about going back to campus/work though because of all the walking and school starts in thirteen days but hopefully I'll be okay :/ we'll see how that goes.
I had a bunion surgery, hammer toe ....3 incisions...two years ago and still doesn't fill right. One large scar almost 3" long, one between toes and one on top of secong toe. The other thing that foot is thicker than the other. Really have hard time with shoes, especially dress shoes. Really think about it and get two or three opinions. By the way I was immobile for a long time...still wearing a boot after 4 months. REALLY think about it and donot do it unless you have to. I will not do the other foot unless I can't stand on it. Hope this helps just alittle. Best od Luck! Sandi
Hi ,
I am 14 and i am set to soon have surgury in may. I have had them all mylife and have went through alot of pain as well. I guess it depends who your doctor is and how much pain you have.

I am 4 weeks out of bunion surgery. Not much pain...had a nerve block and general anasthia for the surgery. I am still hobbling around, still not allow weight on the front of my foot. I was on crutches until the nerve block wore off. I am walking in a big ugly black boot, but without pain. I am told by my doctor that I will be hobbling for another 4 weeks or so. I have 2 screws in my foot and the doc says to treat it as a broken bone. (which it is, he cut through bone and screwed it back together). I haven't been to work since before I had it done. I will do as the doc says, he is the professional. (And I have a wonderful doctor also.) Would I do this again, yes, I didn't think it was all that bad. I also managed to take a trip to New York City after week #2 and walked around for a weekend. Remember to elevate your foot often, it does help. I do take Aleve when needed which isn't very often.
Hi my 11 year old has a bunion and the doc doesnt want to do the sur. at this age because she is not done growing. Is this something your doc mentioned?Like could it damage the growth plate?
I had a bunion removed with surgery about 6 weeks ago so far so good straight toe finally after 30 years. I tried splints, the electrical stimulator, I put pads between the toes for years and wore night splints. I just wish I had the surgery done years before I wasted. My time. Just make sure you try to do the research or ask around. Actually I ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web

, they had a great blog on there, I had my question answered fast. I just looked I don't. See the blog up there any more, not sure why but I email the doctor and he sent me a list of doctors around my area that have experience doing the surgery.
