I do not believe that the medical community is really aware of this cycle change when women quit smoking.  I took notice because I worked in the Medical field for many years and study nursing.  I became well aware of the mental and hormone change only when I quit smoking on 12/27/2011. Congratulation on making a positive decision to live longer.

I have been tied. I was freaking out too. Afraid of a tubal pregnaucy. I am so relieved to find out I am not the only one. I quit 20 days ago. I am 17 days late. My period runs like clockwork and has for five years. Basically, I quit 3 days before I was suppose to start. The dollar store test is negative and now I know why. I am not pregnaut. YYYYEEEESSSS!!! Broke up with that guy. Thank God.

Hi, I am glad to find this internet site as well.  I quit smoking In June, 2012: about 4 months ago.  None of my periods have been the same since quitting!  I was over a week late the first one after quitting, and now only 2 1/2 weeks have passed since my last period!  My periods had been exactly equal at 28 days apart while I smoked.  Now, after quitting, I  believe that  my body will normalize, and my periods will become regular again!

I quit smoking 10 weeks ago and both subsequent periods have been very strange. They have been extremely light with very light cramping. I'm anticipating full on period but doesn't come:( this forum has reassured me! The fact that quitting smoking has m my periods is really screwed up and confirms I made the right decision.

I was a pack a day smoker for over 10 years and recently quit, using the e-cigarette for occasional cravings.  I just got my first period since quitting and what was normally a 3 day period, heavy first day and light 2 days after, has turned in to what is now 7 days of bleeding and I am getting concerned.  This is abnormal for me and I don't have any abnormal pain or clots, but I am wondering if this change could be from quitting.  This is the only thing different other than a little weight gain from the normal quitting of smoking.  Any advice would be appreciated.  I want my fears calmed some.  I thank you for any advice or similar stories.  At what point to I go to hospital or seek medical advice?

I quit smoking a week before I was suppose to get my period. I considered myself a light smoker. A pack a week.

My period came nine days late.

Is this a real thing? Because I quit smoking a week before my period was supposed to come and I'm now 10 days late. I'm particularly worried since my boyfriend and I had an incident 2 days before my period was supposed to start - the condom broke. I took 2 pregnancy tests, both negative, is there still a possibility to be pregnant? I'm really freaking out here. I was a light smoker before, maybe a pack a week and sometimes when drunk more, and i started again 2 days ago because I was really stressed out...

Hey people, yeah I was wondering about this too. It's been just over 3 weeks that I haven't smoked and I'm now 8 days late.

I wanted a scientific explanation, so I quickly did some research.

There are four hormones most heavily associated with the menstrual cycle:

Did a quick google scholar search. Nicotine has effects on/interactions with:Estrogen metabolism (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21491296)FSH and Progesterone (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1281267/)

Let's just all go ahead and assume that the changes in our neurotransmitter production/need, to our metabolism and digestion, to our general mental states and lifestyle in general, after quitting, all work in conjunction to give rise to this delayed period phenomenon. If even going away on holiday for a week can cause severe changes in your period (and it's such a common thing, do you agree?) then eliminating substances that interact with the chemicals in our brain which, in turn, affects hormone release and bodily processes, should definitely be expected to as well! And I haven't even researched the millions of other chemicals in cigarettes, I just looked up nicotine.

So everybody smile, chill, it'll happen! And, supposedly, and I'm drawing a large inference here, it should become more regular and perhaps more spaced out (ie a proper 28+ day cycle) and, as far as I can see, will be associated with a later onset of menopause.

Congrats to everyone who's also made the decision to give up :).

I fully quit smoking cigarettes two weeks ago but had cut down to half a cigarette/day almost two months ago from an average of 7-15/day for the last 14 years. I am 28 years old.  I have been using nicotine patches of 14mg during the whole process and will be moving to the 7mg patches next week. My period is almost a whole month late, with no sign of it coming. I have not taken a pregancy test yet, but have no cause to believe that I am pregant. I believe it is a side effect of cutting down and quitting, although I have not been told so by a doctor or my quit-smoking-phone-coach.

I highly recommend people use the free government provided help line for quitting smoking, or using the patch if you are struggling with the transition. There is no need to shock your body suddenly, a few months of using the patch is not being weak but rather being mindful to your body and the change you are forcing on it. We are often both physically and emotionally addicted to nicotine, so it really helps to have professional help for a more stable and introspective road to quitting so that we may not rebound into old habits. For myself I can say I have suffered less harsh withdrawl symptoms because of it, and I am confident I can make it work. I hope this helps other women out there.

Thank you so much for your post. I quit smoking about 2 weeks ago and am 21 days late on my period as of today. I have taken 2 pregnancy tests and both came out negative. The last 3 days I have been researching what could be wrong and your post is the first thing that shed light. Thank you!

I stopped smoking cold turkey 31 days ago today. Though I was not a pack a day or any capacity close to that. I probably smoked approx 8 cigs a day max. I feel much better not having the smoking habit linger but my period cycle is somewhat consistent. I try not to stalk my cycle calendar but I do get a general feel of when about I'm supposed to start. My body appears to be giving me all the signs as if I'm supposed to start.......sore boobs, bloaded, irritable but no red. Starting to get a bit concerned now because today I am 11 days passed my period start date of a 28 cycle month. Trying not to freak out because I know stressing about it can also prolong it but wondered if the lack of smoking has something to do with it. A little nervous about doing anything as I'm not sure if it's the lack of smoking throwing my body off or if it is the "P" word. Hoping it is the lack of smoking. This forum has helped me not freak out as much but if I'm not "P" then I'm not looking forward to the suprise Aunt Flow visit when it hits. lol Thanks all for sharing. I don't usually but thought it might help.
