I have been smoking for 10 years and I have been on Wellbutrin for 6 days. My cravings having slowly begun to shrivel. Sometimes I will light one up and then just put it out. My doctor told me that you are supposed to continue normall smoking habits while you are on it for the first 2 weeks to give your body time to get used to the medicine and the mdicine to work into your system. Then begin slowly moving away. When I think about it, I have never "really" enjoyed the taste of cigarettes. After about 3 days though I found them starting to taste very displeasing. 6 days in and I can barely stand the taste of a cigarette. In the next few days to come, I'm 100% positive I will be done with this whole smoking business. I have had no side effects and have actually become calmer in my every day normal tasks.
This is in the context of taking Wellbutrin for depression, not smoking cessation.

I've been a smoker for 18 yrs. I LOVE to smoke, My husband has tried everything to get me to quit. The patch worked for a little while, curbed some cravings, but I would smoke with the patch on! I was perscribed Wellbutrin for depression not too long ago and have noticed that I feel the need to smoke as offten, and I'm a pack a day smoker, sometimes a pack 1/2.... I'm not going to say it works yet, but my habits have definitly changed! GOOD LUCK TO ALL
I concur with the general consensus of this thread. I used to smoke and dip, and if it had been awhile between usage, I'd feel this pleasureable feeling flush through my system. It was very enjoyable. Recently, I started taking wellbutrin as an anti-depresseant. As a result, tobacco can still make me feel a little light headed, but it's more of drowsy, depressive feeling than it is pleasureable. As time goes on, my endeaver to derive joy out of tobacco use seems increasingly pointless. Given that I have this endeaver yet nonetheless find that I don't really want to use tobacco anymore, someone actually trying to quit could benefit greatly from using this medication. Some urges to smoke or dip still exist for a few days after I stop, but they are much easier to ignore than they used to be. They are really more of an attempt to buy a little bit of happiness (which doesn't end up woking) than an overwhelming desire.
I am a 43 year old overweight women who's smoked cigarettes and weed for over 20 years. I quit smoking pot and cigarettes on buproprian. I began taking it to quit smoking cigarettes, but didn't plan on giving up weed. It didn't seem important anymore and after 6 weeks on buproprian I just stopped. I wasn't getting that high anymore so it wasn't hard to quit. You will have some crazy side effects like insomnia. You will feel jittery and nervous. I even had a few fits of rage at first, but don't give up. The symptoms will go away. I finally have my life back and not burdened by cigarettes and weed. I feel fantastic. I feel motivated. My acne problem has cleared up. I've started working out and eating good healthy foods. I also gave up alcohol, coffee, junk food and soda. So far I've lost 15 lbs. I drink water instead of soda. I eat fruit when I want something sweet.
Buproprian may not be for everyone. At least give a try, but most importantly ride out the side effects and give it at least a month. It is the best thing I've EVER done for myself. I am now disgusted by cigarettes and can't believe I actually have no desire to smoke. I've replaced my addiction with the desire to work out and get healthy and fit.
reading this post has helped me because I realize that this method of 'giving myself permission' to smoke, will definately work for me. Like you said it takes the pressure off. Thank you and enjoy the new lifestyle!
