I am so excited to hear what all of you had to say... I started taking this medicine a few days ago, and I have set a quit date.. I have already noticed the difference and have been smoking less and less.. I have a question.. Did you just stop taking the medicine when you needed to? I am not diagnosed for depression, strickly taking it to help me quit smoking.

I just want to chime in with my observations of the usefulness of Wellbutrin in smoking cessation.

My experiences with Wellbutrin began PRIOR to its approval as a stop smoking aid... when it was prescribed by my doctor to treat Depression. Without any thought of any the purported stop smoking properties of Wellbutrin, my smoking declined from (2.5) packs a day to just (1) pack a day in less than (60) days without my even really being aware of it.

Later when Wellbutrin was approved as stop smoking medication, I then began to notice that smoking cigarettes wasn't as enjoyable and the taste was far from good... I realized I smoked less because I found it less enjoyable. When I did smoke, I noticed it wasn't because I craved a cigarette, but rather that it was a pure reflex action to light one up. I would often find myself smoking and suddenly questioning why it was that I had lit a cigarette in the first place. That is, I don't remember craving a cigarette and it tasted it awful, yet there I was smoking it.

With Wellbutrin, I noted that my smoking wasn't brought about by any cravings, but rather as I said before by a reflex action. Once I discovered this truth, I made an effort to validate my desire to smoke each cigarette... this reduced my smoking to about (5) cigarettes a day. After a week or so, these (5) cigarettes began tasting awful, but I also agreed that I would finish each cigarette I started smoking. In no time at all I was smoking (2) or less cigarettes a day. To take the pressure off, I never committed to stop smoking and gave myself permission to continue to smoke as long as I actually enjoyed it.

After another month, I smoked a cigarette once every other day and eventually I was smoking a cigarette one a week, once a month, and then hardly ever... in fact, at one point I had to put my cigarette pack in the refrigerator to keep the cigarettes from becoming stale. I have had only one cigarette in the last (6) months... and it was not all an enjoyable cigarette. I refused to officially quit and find it more effective to give myself permission to smoke if I want to... the cigarettes are there in the back of the refrigerator if I want them... no pressure. Still, I've lost interest in smoking.

Wellbutrin works well and I would recommend it to anyone trying to cut down on their smoking. While I have noted a certain weight gain as a known side-effect, I have noticed no change in my sex drive (quite the contrary).

i feel electric cigarette is the all new alternative smoking solution that is taking the world by storm. Moreover ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed allows to smoke a vapor that is free of carbon monoxide. I think this is one of the best ways to quit smoking forever.

My doctor prescribed Well Butrine when I asked for an anxiety medication. The dosage said take one pill everyday for 2 weeks then increase to 2 pills. Knowing I did not like to take pills he told me I could stay at 1 pill if I wanted. At the end of 2 weeks I was going back and forth on not smoking so upped the dosage to 2 pills. 1 in morning then 1 in late afternoon. I stopped smoking and never missed it at all. I have nicotine gum my insurance company sent me for free but chose not to put any nicotine in my body ever again so sent it to my brother with a CD on hypnosis. Wellbutrine worked better than either one of them every did!

I did not have much faith in my being able to stop so do not even know my quit date and never told my family. Been 2 weeks now and know I am a non-smoker and can't even picture how I ever smoked. I don't even want people to say "Good Job" because I just can't even imagine I was a smoker so why celebrate.

Good Luck!!!

Forgot to say I was a smoker for 40 years! My kids lost a friend (age 23) of lung cancer so I vowed I would never hurt them that much again as they were losing their friend!

I am a smoker of 25 years now. I was recently (only 4 days ago) prescribed Wellbutrin (Bupropion SR) for depression. I had not intended to quit smoking. However, Wellbutrin has me smoking a lot less regardless - even though I'm not trying to quit. When I do smoke, it's not the same anymore. I don't get the same satisfaction I always did when I smoked a cigarette. In fact smoking now has the opposite effect on me. When I smoke, it's actually become un-enjoyable to me now. And I find myself not even finishing the cigarette. Putting it out half way through most of the time. I still crave. But not as bad or as intense as I used to. So I enjoy smoking and had no intention of quitting (although I know I should). And now I sometimes don't even think about smoking. Wellbutrin is almost making me quit on it's own. So if someone actually really does want to stop smoking...I'd imagine Wellbutrin will definitely work.

Just to add to the other posts ive seen. ive been a pretty heavy smoker for 15 years, and sober for 8 years as well. i could not seem to give up smoking, in fact it was increasing as time passed, the number of cigs that i smoked daily. I was prescribed wellbutrin and after about 10 days, woke up and the thought of a cigarette was appalling. I have not smoked since! It has only been a few months for me, but it is a really big deal as I truly was a chain smoker, and was a slave to it. There were some funky side effects from the wellbutrin in the first week or so, but they calmed down after I got used to it. One nice side effect (for me) is the reduction of appetite. I have actually lost 5 lbs as well.....bonus! That was one of my triggers for not wanting to quit or resuming in the past. I am thrilled and highly recommend this drug for quitting smoking, it has also boosted my mood a bit. Good luck to all, Regards. :-D

I've smoked for 19 years and decided it was time to quit. I wanted to quit very badly. I started 150mg of Wellbutrin on Wednesday and the following Tuesday, I smoked my last cigarette.  I have no cravings or desire to smoke.  When I smell someone that smokes, it is absolutely horrid to me...so I'm pretty sure I won't smoke ever again.  The Dr told me to set a date 2 weeks out and to quit on that day if I didn't have that "feeling" before then.  I had that feeling that it was time....when you take a drag and it absolutely tastes worse than c**p, it's time to quit! I haven't had one since that day and am very proud of myself!

my mother smoked from age 16 to 55 a 2 pack a day smoker. She tried wellbutrin to quite smoking because she was constantly spitting up brown phlem. She was at great risk for chronic bronchitis. She took the pill for 4 months and has not picked up a cigarette in 6 years. She is a hard sell too.. You should give it a try and before you start you need to make your mind up to quit.

It totally works! I take Wellbutrin as an antidepressant and after about 3 months I did not feel like smoking. I realized that it was the Wellbutrin. I don't even think about smoking anymore.

I have been on wellbutrin a week now.. tomorrow I will start a double dose.. to be taken in the morning.. I have been taking it at bedtime and have had no side effects so far. I am not planing on smoking tomorrow... but if I need one I will not feel bad if I smoke. The doctor told me it would be about 2 weeks anyway... but it is OK to test it to see how you fell.
