I was just prescribed Welbutrin this morning to help me quit smoking. I have to quit smoking do to my husband having to have a liver transplant. we both have to quit smoking because even the the second hand smoke can keep him from getting a liver. you would think this would be all the motivation of person would need to quit, but it had quite the opposite effect. the only way we are going to get through this is to do it together. he has been very successful with the e cigarette, I just had very little cravings although the e cigarette will register nicotine just as well as the cigarette. I am hoping that if I quit smoking with him it will give him the courage to do it on his own since you can't take any medications do to his liver is in such bad shape. I guess my question is how long should I continue to smoke while taking a Welbutrin?

To begin, I am a 28 year old female, 5'3, 114lbs. I was prescribed Wellbutrin XL 150mg to help quit smoking for a week, then upped the dose to 300mg. My doctor initially told me to quit smoking completely after four days on the drug. (I've been on average a half a pack a day smoker for 15 years.) Needless to say, four days into it I still loved my cigarettes. It wasn't until I had taken a few of the 300mg pill that I realized my first cigarette of the day made me nauseous. Shortly after that I realized that cigarettes didn't taste very appealing anymore. And then shortly after THAT I realized that I was smoking more on habit than an actual addiction. So without realizing it I quit exactly two weeks after I started taking Wellbutrin. This is day two of not smoking. The cravings are but easier to deal with than the times I tried to quit cold turkey. I've even looked at my e-cigarette a couple times but thought, "meh. I'm good." And left it alone. As for side effects, the first time I took it I felt like I was on speed for a couple hours. Not shaky or hyper, but amped up and full of electric energy. That hasn't happened again since. The only consistent side-effect I have is very vivid dreams and waking up multiple times at night. While it's annoying, it's not that bad because the Wellbutrin gives me plenty of energy to get through the day.

It's been 2 weeks for me as well, however every once in a while I get a feeling as if I could just pick back up where I left off and start smoking again. Fortunate that feeling only last for a few seconds, then I'm back to whatever else it was that I was doing. Just like other meds, they effect people differently. however with that being said, Wellbutrin is definitely the best method I tried so far that is actually working. Besides my will of wanting to rid myself from such a powerful vice that tends to control my everyday movements.

Hi, did you take 150 mg once daily for a few days and then twice daily? Or did you just stay on once a day?

Be very careful when taking wellbutrin. I quit cold turkey but had a friend that used wellbutrin. He started to change he became very very aggressive and delusional at one time. His wife took him off wellbutrin he returned to his happy self. It was frightening.

This is a well known side effect of the drug.

I was a 30 year smoker that had tried to quit several times with several methods. Patches, acupuncture vaping they all don't work until you really get mad at ciggerettes and stay mad at them for ruling your life.

Now its been 10 years smoke free!

just stay mad at them because the cravings are always there.

I quit for 6 years and remember a nasty cough that lasted about 6 weeks before it cleared up. Unfortunately in a new relationship with a smoker so I started smoking again. He quit and I have not been able to. I am starting wellbutrin to aid me in kicking the habit for good this time

When Dr first moved me to this antidepressant she told me it might help me quit smoking. I take 150mg twice a day. She told me it would take 3 weeks before I would see changes in my mood.
I did not think it would stop the smoking and if it did that would be the icing on the cake.
I woke up yesterday and had no desire to smoke. My mouth had a metallic taste to it. About 2 pm I lit a cig....not cuz I craved it but cuz I wanted to see what it would taste like. It was nasty. I guess that is it for smoking
