Totally agree with your analysis and observations - also, I believe that the extra fogginess you feel is form the synthetic meds, not the fact that you have been smoking for that long.
I medicate with Indica (I am more prone to hypo mania and mania triggered by insomnia) or Hybrids - and when work gets really nuts stressful then I do 1-2 weeks of Lamictal and it curbs the anxiety very well, and it also has that little bit of an up-lifter effect, which helps with the anxiety.
Like you, when I take Lamictal, I lose my desire (and the feeling is a different, like you report) - and I suppose the need - to use cannabis. But I would rather take cannabis daily and lamictal when I need it, then the other way around. I firmly believe (and there evidence) that synths are much worse in the long term that organic/naturally occurring compounds. Especially anti-psychotics (even the next gen).
One more thing - imho, the first line of treatment for BD, anxiety, unipolar depressionis total abstinence from Alcohol. Took me 10 years to realize this. My manic phases are basically history. Hypo mania still looms sometimes, usually when I travel and I am severed from cannabis, but it's so subtle it's actually very functional if you stay on top of it, and manage to get proper sleep.
One final note, for those that get mania/hypomania triggered by insomina, it is good to keep a second gen (atypical) anti-psychotic that has a sleepy side effect for you. I always have a stock of serequel just for that, since I happen to be in the 25% or so users that get super sleepy from it. I haven't used in years though, since I started treating with cannabis.
Cheers!

Thank you so much for this post! I suffer Grand Mal seizures that seem to have been getting longer than just 5mins of seizure activity...my Mum cries every night because she thinks if I have another seizure I very well may die...I'm meant to be on 400mg per day and I did a dumb thing by going onto the whole darn dose at once, despite having quit cold turkey about two years ago. I've smoked daily for like, a year and a half now; but I tried to smoke a joint yesterday, managed half of it but my goodness, was I messed up! I fell about six or seven times - REAL hard onto my hardwood floors. I was so freaked out because I was super twitchy and I really did think I was having a seizure that was slightly controlled by my Lamictal...your post has convinced me to go off the MJ AND take my medication the way its meant to be taken..
