I began the salty mouth taste right after I quit taking zyrtec & Mucinex due to allergies & sinuses. I am 53 yr. old. I just recently have high blood pressure so together with dr. meds I ate more healthier foods less processed. Blood pressure was down a bit but still have salty mouth. Last 3-4 days my nose has been drippy & left ear itchy inside. I thought I'd take zyrtec now to get rid of the runny nose. I try hard to drink more water & make sure I have tic tac wherever I go. I also noticed that I get hungry more often than usual. Eating apples make me feel full for a while. Now I am wondering if I am eating more to get rid of the salty taste or that I am really feeling hungry all the time. I can't wait to hear what my dr. will say.
wierdly, my lefft eye also randomly leaks and hasnt done for a while, and i also have braces. im 17.
Lots of posts, not many good suggestions...

I recently had dental work (old filling replaced). I started to notice a funny metallic or salty taste during and after brushing from the tooth with the new filling. Then I started to have it all the time. Started researching, read about the whitening toothpaste, and sure enough when I looked in the drawer there was an almost empty tube of whitening toothpaste. Just switched toothpaste yesterday and already had an improvement today. I'm sure this isn't the same for everyone...

Personally, I have slightly high blood pressure, recent dental work, drink coffee and alcohol in moderation, take a multivitamin, fish oil and have gerd.

Seems to me gerd, high blood pressure and recent dental work are all common denominators in many cases. If the toothpaste didn't work I personally would be asking a doctor about the the saliva ducts or the pylori bacteria as potential causes. I personally do not believe that the vitamins, coffee or alcohol have anything to do with this condition.

Good luck.

My salty taste just went away by itself. I mentioned previously about tendency to eat more to get rid of the salty mouth. I don't know what happened. i had that for 2 weeks. I don't smoke, drink alcohol, use any whitening teeth type of stuff. But today my blood pressure shot up. Each time I get up I get dizzy. My nose is still runny though.
Wow i can't believe so many people have this same crazy problem. Yea mucous = SUPER salty. Much saltier than i've ever had. I'm not sure if this is related in any way but i have smoked for about a year now and also just as recently as i've had "Salty Mouth Syndrome" my jaw has been acting funny. Not like HAHA funny but sometimes i can't open my mouth all the way or even at all. Haven't been to the doc yet, but i sposse he'll just tell me the same things i'm reading here. Keep posting though!
Hello everyone..
It has taken me three nights to read all of the posts from the beginning. I share some common ideas/symptoms as many of you including whitening products/toothpastes.

HAS ANYONE EVER USED PRODUCTS SUCH AS CREST WHITE STRIPS???

I have always noticed a bad taste in my mouth after using those. Then, my daughter accidently grabbed the wrong toothpaste for me at the grocery, and everything is much worse. I did not use the toothpaste after reading your posts, and it seems better.

I also have reflux and am recovering from a very lengthly sinus/cough illness which produced the salty mucus. I have not been to the doctor, but from what I have read, it may or may not help. The only other cahnge in products that I have made recently is the use of Burt's Beeswax products, which I am loving, but now am concerned as to if there is an ingredient that is producing this salty taste.

I wish that a medical specialist could read all of these posts and do some research! There may or may not be a root cause, but it seems as if there could be several "things" that could enhance the condition by making it worse. Please keep posting as you find answers. It is such a help just to know that I am not alone with this.
I have had a metal/briney taste in the back right side of my mouth for about a week. It started about a day after my jaw began to hurt a bit. After a couple days when the taste developed and the jaw pain intensified, I thought that maybe it was a problem with my wisdom tooth area (I had all four out about a year ago). I saw the dentist who took xrays and saw that everything looks normal. My wisdom teeth areas appear to have healed nicely and are completely filled with bone now.

I am scheduled to see the oral surgeon next week. I am interested in the possibility of a calcification/infection of a saliva gland. Also the tear duct problem that has been mentioned could have something to do with it - I was recently on a birth control pill that made me really emotional and I was crying hard every day for about 3 weeks. Could also have something to do with my toothpaste - I started using the crest health/whitening stuff a couple of months ago. I'm not sure what only one side of my mouth/jaw would have the problem.
I am feeling fully embarrassed. Mine seemed to start after kissing a new man! He smokes. I don't. He drinks coffee, I don't. Is that happening to anyone else? (I do brush my teeth! A lot!) I think I am getting more freaked out the more I read! I'll mention all of this to my dentist when I see him - hopefully he'll have something to say. I can't imagine adding this as a permanent problem to add to the other health stuff in my life!

Best of luck to all of you - I hope we all find some help!
I have read all of the above; I recently (last 2 weeks) started the same problem after having gone to Grand Bahama Island for winter break. I rode jet skis, swam. I also started taking a B-6 vitamin supplement about the same time. I am going to stop the B-6. I use a lot of Alba natural skin care /hair care products and cannot find tea tree extract listed, although it might still just be called something different. I am going to research H pylori bacteria as I have had a gut ache since yesterday and have been having headaches sometimes. No other members of the vacation group have had problems...
It has been going on for me for about 2 months now..My sister says it is all sinus, but I can't imagine it...some days are worse than others, and today is a bad one!

any answers yet? Haven't read all the posts yet...but I am glad to not be alone!

Thank You
Thought I was nuts! o.O I have had this salty taste from a sudden on site for 2 days. I looked all over the internet and their is endless possibilities out there. The only thing I can think of the Claritin D that I started a week ago. I was taking it for post nasal drip and nasal congestion. Seems like the salty taste is coming from the mucous. I took my last Claritin yesterday but think it may take another day to see if anything happens, since it was the 24 hour dosage. I talked to the pharmasist and he said that Claritin D is a combination of Pseudofed and Loratadine. One is for drying the nasal passages and one is to make them run or break up any mucous. He said its like two drugs working against each other. How can you break up mucous that may be already dried up? 8-| Oh well we shall see. Will check back with the results. :-D
Ok everyone, I too have the salty taste in my mouth accompanied by too much saliva, and no answers. I have some questions for everyone that haven't been asked yet and I think might help us all find the common cause. My doctor said it's probably nothing to worry about but since I have high anxiety about all things medical, I wonder if it's a different response than others might get. I'm tired of going to Doctors so I'm hoping all of you would like to really do what it takes for us to help each other. First, let's be organized. I'm going to post questions with a letter in front of them, so when you answer, write it as a list with the letters in front of your answers. I solve problems for a living and I'm very good at what I do, so let's hope for all our sakes that we can find a solution. I've taken some of my own issues and put them together with what I've read to come up with these questions as a starting point. At the top of your post please put: RESPONSE TO JP-thanks everyone
A. WHAT MEDICATIONS DO YOU TAKE
B. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN ON THE MEDICATIONS
C. DO YOU DRINK ALCOHOL OR SMOKE CIGARETTES
D. DO YOU HAVE ANXIETY OR DEPRESSION ISSUES
E. HAVE YOU HAD YOUR TONSILS OR ADNOIDS REMOVED
F. HAVE YOU CHANGED YOUR DIET IN THE PAST YEAR
G. DO YOU DRINK COFFEE AND IF SO WHERE FROM
H. WHAT ARE YOUR SLEEPING HABITS
I. HOW OFTEN DO YOU BRUSH YOUR TEETH
J. HAVE YOU BEEN CONSTIPATED RECENTLY
K. DID IT START AT THE SAME TIME AS A CLIMATE CHANGE IN YOUR AREA
L. DO YOU HAVE COLD HANDS AND OR DRY SKIN

I have more questions but hopefully we will be able to find some patterns with these. Any of you who want to find the cause and solution to this problem should answer these questions. The more people that answer, the higher our chance of success. Thanks again and I hope everyone feels better soon. Also if any of you have other questions that you think might be helpful, please add them and I will do my best to respond.
The problem could be very well related to a recent virus exposure or virus remission...i happen to have a salty taste in my mouth that starts only after i eat or drink, and no it's not the food trust me, i could be eating sweet stuff...but i get in the back of my throat coming from the partoid gland apparently salty mucous or saliva, the other thing is a wired feeling in ym uvula, like something squeezing my uvula...

the uvula feeling and the saltiness started right after sometime (maybe incubation of a virus) when i took this girl out (no sexual intercourse) only kissing. th girl is fine but, thank god i didn't proceed with her.

in any case this seems to be related, because never had any uvula problems whatsoever in my life neither for the salty taste

please share ur input...if anybody got an idea what that maybe, maybe is the mononucleosis virus, which happens to be a very common virus...i do not know
I have had this reoccurring salty taste in my mouth for the past 7 months. It was very persistent for the first 6 months, and then it went away. Now it has been back full force for a bout a month. I am so confused. I do drink alcohol from time to time. I really started experiencing the issue when I stopped smoking cigarettes. I was only smoking about 2 a day but when I cut that out, I started producing a ton of salty saliva. I also have a watery right eye. I don't know what the actual cause is of my problem. I had a really bad sinus infection right before I began experiencing the salty taste again. I wish someone could tell me what to do about this. I hate this taste in my mouth.
