Wow! I'm amazed at how many of us have the same exact symptoms...yet no Doctor that I have been to, or obviously any that you all have been to, has any expanation at all!

I have seen my GP, Pulmonologist, Cardiologist, and ENT. (Just yesterday I had a CT scan of my sinus...I'm hoping that will show something!) Every single one of them said they have never heard of anything like it! It's so frustrating. They all have said "maybe it's from the Gerd and it's splashing back up into your throat"....but this salt seems to come DOWN from my sinus, not UP from my throat.

My salty sputum has been going on for about 4 months, and I have racked my brain trying to figure out what is goin on!

I too have GERD, Barretts esophagus, and H Pylori (on my third round of antibiotics to try to get rid of it) and also a loose back tooth. AND I developed high blood pressure in the past month! In the beginning it would come for a day or two and then go away for a few weeks. Now it seems that it is here for a few weeks, and then goes a sway for a few days. It's so strong that it burns my throat and my tongue, and chokes me. I have to constantly sip water, or suck on a cough drop. Also, it seems to make my esophageal tenderness 10 times worse...it feels like it's scalding my esophagus!

I can't believe there are so many of us....with no answers, and no help.
Also, I have bouts of what seems like allergys (which I have never had before) sneezing, watery eyes, congestion, etc. It appears suddenly, and dissapears just as suddenly with out using any medication (benadryl etc.) This began in March 08...before any of my other problems began. In May The GERD and H Pylori problems reared thier ugly head. The salt taste started in September...and the high BP in January. It seems like a snowball effect for me, one thing right after another.
Anyone else have this happen?

Here are the meds I was on before the salty problem began: I was on them for about 2 years before the onset. I don't think the medication is the problem.

Simvastatin (for high cholesterol)
Iron (for anemia)
Fish oil (for high tryglicerides)

After reading 2 complete threads on this subject....I'm wondering if the H Pylori is the culprit. (even thought the salt comes from the sinus area, and not the stomach area). It will be interesting to see if the salty mucous dissappears IF and when I get rid of the H Pylori. Do you know that 50% of people have H Pylori and don't know it? Maybe this is the common link?

My ENT is the first doctor that I've seen that has even shown much interest in the "salty syndrome". He told me he was going to contact his collegues at PSU and see if they have any answers. I sent him the link to these forums, and I am hoping he will take a look at what is going on with us, and God willing, help us to get some answers.
I'm writing for my friend who shares the problem of a salty taste.
It began about 4 weeks ago. Around that same time 2 things happened. He lost a bridge so went to the dentist. He had his teeth cleaned and had the bridge cemented back in. The dentist noticed another tooth was infected and couldn't be saved, so he pulled it. That root was infected too.

Around the same time, he saw an eye doctor for a lump on his lower eyelid. The doctor noted that the lump was so close to the tearduct that it complicated the surgery and said he'd have to go under general anesthetic because of it. That's the plan.
Then, for some reason, the eye doctor pulled down the lid and stuck a needle down into the tear duct. My friend didn't ask why that was necessary but it was painful.

We read that others had watery eyes or tear duct issues AND had recently been to the dentist. Because of these connections, he feels that the reason for his salty taste has to do with either the tearduct or the dentist.

Frustrating but this has been a helpful posting. Thanks.
I've had a salty taste in my mouth for a few days now. I did go to the dentist about three weeks ago so it can't be that. I smoke and drink very little. I'm in Switzerland so I doubt that it's something regional from previous posters who were wondering. My lip tastes like salt and I am constantly sucking it and it's extremely annoying and I think about it all day.
I have the salty tast on the left side of my tongue. I have had it for a little over two weeks. I went to the doctor last week and am taking an antibiotic but it is not working. She also put me on clariton d. This is very annouying. I think it is coming from my left ear as I have a perferated ear drum. I have tried drinking water with baking soda plus flushing my ear with peroxide but no luck. This is very frustrating.
ahhh there seems to be few of us hay.. i have only had it for a couple of days now. i had a long weekend, maybe overdid it a little bit. very strange sensation though i never had salty mouth like this before. i love salt maybe thought i had been having to much, i guess its good to cut back.. i thought orange juice would shift the taste but no joy, tea defiantly should not taste salty...oh that's nasty. i try to drink more water and fruit juices hopefully i can shift this funk. seems like there is a lot of people with the problem and people that have had it for a long time, hope you find solutions

easy d
I had a salty taste in my mouth for a few weeks, I looked it up on the internet and found out it was probably related to my asthma. It has now gone away.

My sister has recently experienced the same thing, but hers followed an ear infection.

Conclusion: Its all in the tubes!! Nothing to worry about and is probably related to an infection of some sort somewhere in your body.
The government where I live (Queensland, Australia) just recently started putting fluoride in the water and a short time after I started having a lingering salty taste on and off, decided I better do some research because it was actually keeping me awake at night.

I've been drinking at least a litre of water everyday for over 10 years now, I'm reasonably healthy and so is my diet. The only thing thats changed in my life has been fluoride going into the water that I drink, so I looked up fluoride poisoning, symptoms included a salty taste and excess saliva production, milk or calcium supplements were recommended. A glass of milk helped right away. So I'm going to swap a glass of water for a glass of milk everyday.

If I haven't replied in a month's time consider me cured.
Have been on several meds for various health problems for years, including Aciphex for GERD, which is well under control. Came down with respiratory infection two weeks ago. Took Z-Pak for 5 days and Rx codeine cough medicine. It helped. But the leftover "cold-like" symptoms bothered me so I started taking Nyquil. A few days ago I noticed a very salty taste in my mouth when I coughed up some mucous. I still taste the salt [like ocean salt water] whenever I cough up mucus. I'm thinking it has to do with the Nyquil. I'm hoping to discontinue that in a couple days, so I'll see if it goes away shortly thereafter.
I think there is a correlation with fluoridation, as there are many sources of fluoride i.e. antidepressants, toothpaste, water, cigarettes, fish (all things people have been noting as part of their daily intake). Not to say that there aren't other things causing it, like meds side effects, magnesium supplements, heavy metal toxicity, nerve problem etc. Fluoride is toxic to everyone, but some people may me more sensitive to it.
It's comforting to find that so many have the same problem. It may seem trivial to most, but it is gradually driving me mad as well!. My salty taste first started about 3 weeks ago. I had just had sunday lunch and was sitting down with a cup of tea. I tasted it and thought my wife was trying to poison me with salt! Ever since then the salty taste has remained in varying strengths. The worst is when I chew gum which obviously causes more saliva to be produced. Interstingly I had been to the dentist around 4 days before and had a scale and polish. We had also just started to use a new whitening toothpaste which tasted awful. Despite cutting this out there has been no change. The first time I saw a doctor he put me on anti-fungal tablets which did nothing. I have been back today and he has booked a blood test for me but seems very puzzled by the whole thing. I have also started to feel very lethargic and have an increased appetite. I have had my tonsils out as a kid 40+ years ago and I am a hayfever sufferer. I have never smoked and drink a couple of glasses of wine every other night or so. Would be nice to know of any common links. I favour the flouride poisoning theory. %-)
Has anyone figured this out yet? It's been happening to me the last few months and it's truly driving me crazy. The only thing I've found that gets rid of it temporarily is pink grapefruit juice. But I need a permanent solution. Does anyone who's having this problem smoke? I do and am wondering if maybe the cigarettes have been changed somehow. I'm getting desperate.
i too feel like my taste buds on the tip of my tongue were damaged and now my saliva tastes salty in that area. i keep thinking my gums are bleeding because of the salty taste, but they're not!

i made a few changes in my lifestyle/health about the same time i started experiencing this a few days ago. i just started using a new brita filter. i just started using lever 2000 soap. i had a fever 10 days ago and still have a lingering cough with some extra sinus activity.

my guess is that i have a minor sinus infection of some sort which is causing an anesthesia-like effect on the tip of my tounge causing a salty sensation.

how should i go about trying to clear out my sinuses?
Well I am going on two months now with no results. Here is what I have done. I was placed on antibiotics no luck, Peridox a prescription mouth wash that is suppose to kill the salt taste, no luck. Vitamin B12, clariton D, no luck. Gator Aide, lots of water, no luck. Changed tooth paste from baking soda to ordinary Crest, no luck. I am a scuba diver and I have a perferated ear drum and thought that salt water may have infultrated past my ear drum but flushing it with swimmers ear and an antibitic ear wash did not help either. I had my tonsils out when I was a kid and a wisdom tooth pulled when I was about 25 which caused some nerve damage to my lower left jaw. I was diving in the Caribbean when these salty taste symptoms showed up. We were on a cruise and I kept telling my wife when I brushed my teeth the ship tap water tasted salty she said it tasted fine to her. Maybe they need a research study on our problem looks like they would have plenty of of us to work with. I am 55 years old I have never smoked, am a social drinker only on weekends and have a cup of coffee in the morning and one in the evening. This is very annoying.
I had the salty taste and in my case it was related to oxalates. I saw someone mention drinking tea (tea is full of oxalates) as a trigger and I got my problems under control when I limited my high oxalate intake. I think its strange that it is so hard to ignore the salty taste, but it is. The low oxalate diet is mostly known in autism field and kidney field but many feels that it helps in other conditions. Oxalate is a natural component in many kind of foods but if you eat a very high oxalate diet then it can irritate the body in different ways and the bowel or mouth can be affected (strange taste, burning, blisters, pain, redness). Oxalate is acidic and corrosive. High oxalate foods include: spinach, almonds, buckwheat, tea, tomato, most nuts, sesame seeds, rhubarb, turmeric. Some people seems to handle it better than others.
