it does make you lose weight. and what do you mean "messing around with mental and physical health to lose weight". diet and exercise is changing your mental and physical health as it is. You are also messing with your mental and physical health when you smoke, drink, or eat unhealthy which i am sure you do all of, or atleast some of. most drugs aren't half as bad as most peoples diets are. problem is that food is legal without a script, so you think it's all safe. think again. prescription meds are illegal w/o a script, so all think they are all unsafe. think again.

my point is that just because it's a prescription med, and she is using it for a reason unintended by the manufacturer doesn't mean she is going to hurt herself. your lack of knowlege though might end up hurting you with the uneducated opinions.

Concerta does help with weight loss. I have been on it for ADHD for about 6 months and it is a mild appetite suppressant. However I had taken adderall a couple years back and I lost so much weight. There has been alot of speculation that celebrities who have had significant weight loss have done it by taking adderall. It actually used to be used specifically for weight loss until they discoverd it works for adhd. So they just renamed it and marketed it for ADHD. Adderrall does have awful side effects such as paranoia, hallucinations, and sleeplessness.

I am on concerta because I have add. I got a whole packet that clearly states it is NOT to be shared with ANYONE who dosen't have the disorder. I'm never hungry but I always feel dizzy and hyper.

I haven't seen any mention on this forum of the actual underlying reasons for obesity...I mean mostly I see that people have been discouraging you from taking this drug unless there is a problem such as ADHD or depression, but what if one or both of those may be the underlying reason you are overweight? I am overweight myself and I struggle with depression. I have not found an antidepressant that has proven to be beneficial to me as the side effects are either worse than dealing with depression or the drugs make my depression worse. Although I understand that it will take a combo of dieting and exercise, a lot of times it's something else that makes a person want to shovel the junk food in their mouths in the first place; i.e. stress/anxiety or emptiness/depression. I would talk to your doctor and explore options (as I am still doing...sorry I wish I had the exact answer...hope this is somewhat useful info though). Take care and good luck.

DO NOT TAKE CONCERTA AS A WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT!!! holy c**p...okay CONCERTA is a drug that is used to treat ADD/ADHD. it is a controlled substance which means youll get arrested for dealing it or giving it to someone that it is not perscribed!

Concerta works with your Central Nervous System (CNS) to counteract the effects of ADD/ADHD. such effects include not being able to pay attention, hyperactivness, control impulses, etc. drug companies desgined this drug to work for those reason and those reasons only! weight loss may be a side effect (becasue it supresses your appetite due to NAUSEA) but if you do not have ADD or ADHD DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG!

im 17, almost 18, and my freshman year i wwa 5ft tall and weight 190 lbs. the beginning of my sophomore year, i was diagnosed with ADD..which i think thats kinda a bs excuse as to why i dont pay attention..but whatever. so, i started taking one 54mg concerta a day and by the end of my school year, i was 5ft 3in and weight 130lbs. and honestly, it did help me with my grades. but the only motivation i had behind taking it was so i could keep the weight off. i would go 2-3 weeks without eating and finally the doctor said no more and took me off of it. but i was put back on it last monday, and i havent eaten since then..but im super body concious. as long as its prescribed to you, and you dont abuse it, i think its okay. its helped me in more than one way. but dont take it to lose weight like i did. this time around, even though i dont feel hungry, i know i am because my stomach growls and i get shaky. so i force myself to eat an apple everyday. but dont take it for the wrong reasons.

I just started using concerta for my ADD two days ago and I have hardly eaten at all since I started taking it. I JUST visited with my doctor and the most common side effect is a large amount of weight loss, so whoever says that it doesn't make you lose weight, is very uneducated and needs to get some facts before they start making statements like that. My brother took concerta and adderall when he was in high school for his ADD and lost a significant amount of weight, because the medicine makes one not have an appetite, so I find myself being hungry but when I try to eat something or think about eating, I can't do it. I'm only on 18mg, too. Concerta can be used as a weight loss pill, but that is abusing the medicine and harmful too the body, because it is clearly not what the intentions of the medicine are. Years and years ago, the ingredients in concerta were in fact used as way of weight loss, but that was when it was.. well .. like speed. This information came from the mouth of my very legitimate doctor, so anyone that says otherwise, unless you have a PhD in this area, you are wrong. Thanks.

Doctors that prescribe psych meds and patients that take them know that almost all of them promote fat in the abdominal area, the most dangerous kind of fat to have. There are even a few meds that contain the warning that one side effect of taking them is diabetes and heart disease because they push the body into storing fat.

So, some of you need to stop telling people just to stop eating fatty foods and exercise more in order to lose weight. Yes, that's good advice for some, but is NOT the answer for everyone.

I gained 30 pounds in the first 6 weeks I was put on an new drug mix for my bipolar disorder. Before that, I hadn't gained more than 10 pounds since I turned 15. I don't think I could have eaten my way into that weight gain so quickly if something systemic wasn't taking place.

It is not strange to look for an answer to this problem with another psychopharmaceutical. I think the first one I would try, though, would be to add Wellbutrin to your mix--it is a non-narcotic anti-depressant and might give you the effect you need. That's what I take to counteract the extreme weight gain. (No, I have never been able to lose 25 of those gained pounds, but I haven't continued to add.)

Concerta would be a very poor choice for me, because I can't even tolerate the stimulation of an allergy pill without having manic symptoms, but if you possibly have some symptoms that could use Concerta anyway, it may be worth a try.

Are you serious? NO! Concerta is not a diet aid. I've been on it for a few weeks now, and trust me- the loss of appetite is not worth the loss of sleep and the mood swings.

I've been using concerta for a month, 36mg per day, and have had good results. I'm a male, 6'1" and I used to weight 192 lbs, but now weigh 182 lbs because of concerta - a 10 lb difference in a month! My ideal weight is about 175-180, so I'll shed a few more pounds before making a concerted effort to eat enough to maintain my new body. I look and feel much better than I have in years. I haven't had any mood swings or any negative side effects, except to say that it was tricky to get 8 hours of sleep per night in the first few days of taking the drug. I quickly adapted to it shortly after, though, and my sleep patterns are normal now. All in all, it is easily the best diet strategy I ever employed. (And no, I'm not lazy or have any interest in junk food. I run 20-30 km per week and eat reasonably - no red meat, fried foods, I pass on any alcohol, etc. - and I still wasn't losing those pesky extra 10 lbs.) I highly recommend considering it as an option for those looking to quickly and effortlessly lose weight.

I just started concerta 4 days ago, and it not only makes my moods, attention, motivation, and focus stable, but I have to set alarms to remind me to eat. I don't like eating on it, but it's unhealthy to not eat for 12 hours. I eat right before I take it, and then 4 hours later, 4 hours after that, and usually I really can't consume more then 1200 calories in a day. I never want to be full, it's just not in my brain. I eat to not be hungry. I have always had problems with my weight, and I am hoping that this will help me here too. I have motivation to go to the gym. I actually LOVE the gym now. I am worried about exercising and concerta, it already makes my heart beat more intense, and I worry about heart problems. I assume excercise is good for your heart but what if you are on concerta? Will this weaken my heart or hurt it in anyway? I really don't want to get off of this, for once in my life I am stable, I am rational, and I feel in control. I have never felt in control like this before... and if this is what it is like to experience life as a "typical" person, then I've missed out. I am so much happier.

i lost 70 pounds from 8th grade to my junior year in high school from eating better and working out a ton. so after loosing that weight i was about 130..and now i weigh 100 because concerta literally made me stop eating. i took it for my add and even my doctor realized it was not right for me. if you take a medication like concerta and you are not diagnosed with a reason to take it, it can really hurt your body so just be safe and keep eating right and workout you can do it and loose the weight in a healthy way ! :)
