I used to have these episodes as a child. My last one was when I was about 23 (I'm 35 now). For me, sound would be amplified and noises would actually FEEL heavy. Also, the slightest pressure on , say my shoulder, would feel like a giant weight. As if someone was sitting on me. Things would look smaller then larger, then smaller again. Very frightening. The only way I could make it go away was to count backward from 100, but even the sound of my own voice was unbearable. My dad and one of my brothers also had these "fits". I am absolutely dying to know what this is. Someone please help!
Wow! Thought I was alone in these sensations too. I'm 33 and have had these feelings intermittently for the last couple of years but nothing for a while until last night. Finger tips, teeth and tongue felt thick and over-sized. The common thread here, looking through other people's posts, seems to be when we are in bed on the edge of sleep and perhaps some underlying anxiety/illness. For me I have a slight cold at the moment and last night I was very tired to the point where I was over-tired, my mind was fizzing and I couldn't drop off to sleep properly. I don't worry about it (in fact I find it quite interesting when it happens). I just assume its one of those things. The human brain is the most complex machine ever evolved and every now and again it will throw a curve ball. Its no coincidence that most 'ghost sightings' are when people are falling asleep or are suddenly awoken and the brain is half awake and half asleep. The mind can do some odd things when it wants to.
Hey again, i'm that guest that Posted: 07/28/09 - 13:56
I'm in college now, majoring in psychology, I have a final tomorrow and was studying schizophrenia. Well, one of the quotes used in describing schizophrenia was about a false perception, in the quote it was about a woman, who can be presumed to be a schizophrenic, she writes, Quote:
Well as you guys can see, she has almost what we are all talking about, a weird sensory distortion where we feel two opposing things at the same time. I was beginning to think we were all on the verge or all susceptible to being schizophrenics, but maybe we had something going right for us, in the way of our environments... Anyways, I was really worried for a whole hour before writing this post because Schizophrenia/mental illnesses are hereditary and my eldest sister is manic depressive and a schizophrenic. It's a truly burdening thought for me that I could perhaps end up like her...
ah anyways I did more research and saw that we all may be experiencing these problems or some form of them:
Hyperesthesia
Hypoesthesia
...maybe micro / macropsia
dysmegalopsia
If one of you guys ever gets to talk to a neurologist or even psychologist, could you find out for us what is really going on with us? For awhile I was even thinking we were all "indigo" children or something too haha.

I felt my body to be first giant, then minuscule. My arms seemed to be several inches longer than before and did not feel as though they belonged to me."

I've noticed that it has two ways of manifesting for me. One is that things will feel thin and it will seem as if I'm going fast, the other is that things will feel thick and it will seem as if I'm going slow.
I have also had this since I was little. I had my first experience with it at around 5 years old. I've noticed that the frequency of it has lessened as I have gotten older.
I have been diagnosed with schizo affective disorder, I'm also experiencing other symptoms.

Its been hard for me to explain what i feel. this started ever since i was small, this panic attacks where i felt my hands being thick then skinny at the same time, it truly freaks me out. I would cry and run around the house telling my mom I felt weird. It all starts when in my head i start thinking of objects that are light and insignificant like a needle or a tiny fragile wood stick and when i put it aside a big mattress or car i get real panicky, and this is all in my head. I’ve never done drugs, my parents don’t smoke or drink, I don’t either. I had a really happy childhood, but this trauma has kept me worried for as long as i can remember. It usually happens at night, when i’am fully awake, and when i start thinking about light/heavy objects next together. It happens like once or twice a year. My heart starts racing super fast, i get really nervous and i have to get up and start walking back and forth, i usually go and try to massage my hands with warm water, i take deep breaths and try to keep calm. I came to the internet to find an explanation, and i only found this cite. Doctors have never being able to give me a logical explanation. My parents think its all in my head and I know I’am not alone with this. I know theirs at least someone out their that experiences the same thing I do.
Another sufferer here. Was wondering if any of you guys wear glasses, or have seeing problems? I sometimes trigger these episodes when I'm wearing an old pair of specs that are a bit below the degree i need in one eye, causing the other eye to work a little harder. Something like that.
I don't know what it is. It's happened to me I think 3 times, and I'm 15 years old. No drugs, except motrin- but I do have a fever. I just woke up and felt weird- both of my thumb and middle and index fingers tapped together would feel wide and thick but thin or heavy etc. same idea. Same on my thighs and some other places. Not really when I pick things up tho. The most interesting thing that I haven't heard yet is probably me narrating myself unintentionally while I'm under this state. I say things at a certain pace in my head (usually slow) and its REALLY annoying. It's kinda scary too. It feels like its got to do with the fever AND lack of sleep. Oh well
The internet's amazing; this JUST happened to me as I was watching TV (age 27), so I googled it, but this used to happen to me all the time when I was a kid (hadn't happened in years), and no one was ever able to figure out what the heck was happening to me; I never realized this happened to other people till just now! It'd start when I was in bed, and then everything would feel both thick and thin, and the relative sizes of everything would be warping (and of course, it would always start when I put my fingers together). It would also feel really distressing, and I'd know that it was a sign that soon, everything would start getting louder and louder and sounding more and more angry, especially the clock or overhead fan. My mom always thought I was asleep and having a nightmare, but I was wide awake.
She is a physician's assistant, and eventually thought that what I was having were "Night Terrors". I just looked this up, and the definition of night terrors is pretty vague and doesn't mention the characteristic thick/thin fingers that we all experience.
I had a happy childhood, no abuse whatsoever. Not sure what brought it on just now, though I was watching a particularly distressing Deadwood episode (season 2 episode 6). There is a little bit of schizophrenia in the family history. This seems like the only website I can find people talking about this; anyone else find any others?

I have experienced this intermittently through my life too (38 years old now). I get the sensation that my teeth and fingers are very, very thick. It has never frightened me, but often puzzled me. My girlfriend in highschool used to get the same thing.
For the last twelve years I have been on a minimal dose of buspirone for an unrelated condition, and during that time the frequency of the sensation has decreased sharply (from roughly six times a year to about once per year).
I re-experienced the thick-teeth again this morning soon after waking up, and hopped online to see if there was a name or body of research on the phenomenon, but a dozen google searches later (on "thick teeth sensation", "thick fingers sensation", "illusion of having thick teeth", and others similar) this forum is the only thing I've found! Certainly this thing has been documented, and I'm just not finding it yet. I'll keep digging. If I find something, I'll post it here and perhaps make a web page.

this is the first ive seen of other people experiencing this. when i was younger i would remember just have weird sensations in my hands and my mind would focus on strange feelings. i remember once it happened while i was standing outside with my sister and i tried to explain it to her but she didnt understand. it was always like a strange dissociation. there has to be more information somewhere about all this.
i had this strange thickening heavy sensation of my tongue and both arms when i was young everytime i have a fever, and it just came back now that i am 28 i still have this strange heavy thickening heavy sensation of my tongue and both arms, i got scared because if my tongue got really big it might block my airways, i dont have any idea what kind of disorder am i experiencing,
Wow, This is interesting, I have not had these feelings for years but during the time from 6YO to around 18YO I had it a lot. I am from Montana, I am male, I am tall athletic, I also have A.D.D. and took Ritilyn for a couple of years when I was around 8YO. I still have racing thoughts and sometimes have trouble concentrating but am sucessful and happy now. My feelings if disasociation were similar to the rest of you but mine felt like my whole body, and especially my lips felt like a big innertube blowing up to the point that my body filled the room I was in. Then when I breathed everything shrunk to a disturbingly thin toothpick-like feeling. When I was in the blown up stage I was scared that I would sufficate under the mass of my own body. So That is it for now, hope this helps you all to sort this out>>>>>MOR LTR
I've had nearly the same feelings some time, and after some investigation, I've realised it feels like "Alive in Wonderland sindrome". It can be caused by migraine or brain tumors and is a sign of Epstein-Barr virus. I would definetely recommend looking it up on Wikipedia or something.
I just had an episode of feeling as if my hand were thin and accualy any thing I would tuch felt the same in addition to feeling nosious.
I had been having these feeling since grade school and I would get about 20 of these episodes a year quite randomly. I felt those feeling ocationaly when I played the piano for a long period of time in contrary to what the posts above describe. I remember a specific episode I had when I was 12 if I recall correctly, and my older sister was watching over me. I started feeling this feeling and being sick because of it, so I told her of these feelings I get from time to time. She was going through a spiritual phase at the time so she new this witch doctor, not that I believe in such things, so she called her and asked her to work her mojo or whatever and than this feeling just stoped.Growing up I had very strong feelings for her so I guess that the knowing that she took care of it resulted in some kind of a placebo effect on me. So I guess that if you believe smth can make these episodes stop and you do this smth it'll work.
I also would like to note as some people above that I do not use drugs of any kind but an ocational pill for a headache or smth.
