i understand where your son is coming from, i'm a 35 yr old type 1 diabetic since the age 8. I've been smoking pot since i was 17 and now am a medical marijuana patient in the state of Mich. I too smoke at least once a day. my blood sugars tend to run 300-HI.
There ae so many positive aspects of medical marijuana not only for diabetics, but children with cancer who are in pain can benifit as well. i cook with as well as smoke it.
i work in the medical field as well, and as a professional i vote we legalize it in all states.

yo Not true all of what was just spouted over a year ago by you is true yeah Type 1 is serious i would know Im 20 years old and have had type 1 Diabetes since I was 3 and half years old i have only recently found solace in having this shitty existence by smoking marijuana it has helped me regain control of my blood sugars as well as got me active and helped me stay active in turn helping lower my blood sugars even more the only true side effect if its even an effect is the forgetfulness when you are high i will admit i have had times where i've smoked a lot ( about an ounce ) and forgotten to give myself my insulin ( for those of you reading and wondering i take Novolog and Lantus ) other than that weed is great with diabetes

I would agree that there are studies which do show benefits to diabetics who use marijuana. However, I used this substance for years. LET US NOT KID OURSELVES - OR ANYONE ELSE. It is absolutely mind-altering and can be very habit-forming.

Hey, i read every post on this topic... And i agree with almost all of them, i have big issues with the legal system in general; The fact that marijuana is illegal is one of these issues, but thats a different subject. I find smoking definately takes the stress away from having this condition... i am terrified of being diagnosed as depressed along with diabetes, so i choose this instead of popping pills.

I must say that the main problem i had was indeed the "munchies", it was overwhelming at times... but i have learnt to control it. Smoking with friends/family helps with this as they can intervene. The other problem i had was using this to escape reality. It realy does demotivate you if you spend all day smoking, thinking and dwelling on the fact you have this disease. As long you eat well, remember to check your blood sugar, keep active and most impotantly smoke in moderation; It makes coping with diabetes so much easier. Dont listen to people stating that marijuana is a terrible thing, as their point of view is usually clouded by the legal system and therefore bias.

I am 21 and was diagnosed with type on diabetes at 16 (I still consider myself a diabetic newbie). I have been smoking pot on an evening for a couple of years now and do find that my blood sugar tends to drop a little about 10 minutes after my first hit. I have however recently quit (temporarily) and am averaging 5 sugars lows a day, whereas before my sugars were averaging a little high. My routine has also changed (school-full time job) and I'm wondering if my recent lows could be lack-of-weed related. My other thought is that the lows could be lack-of-stress related as my sugars skyrocket when I am under pressure from school and I'm now working the best and most care-free job in the history of the universe.

In relation to intelligence I find that pot has helped me. I have just completed third year university and have the second highest average in my program and was able to keep a part time job in addition to an overloaded course schedule. I am also friends with quite a few engineers who somehow manage to take (and pass with very high averages) eight courses a semester and although none of them are diabetic, I'm fairly sure that most of them would have dropped out if they didn't have the option of getting high to get through their ridiculous piles of homework.

I have in the past avoided smoking during exams, however I approached this year's finals differently and found that when I was absolutely bored of studying and desperate to give up, smoking pot gave me the extra boost of willpower to keep going. I would never advise writing an exam high (although I've never experimented so it could potentially have positive results) but this year's results were a definite improvement from those in the past (90% exam average for third year uni!!!!).

I know how many people try to give advice, which is especially annoying when they have no idea what they're talking about but here's a little: if smoking pot with type one diabetes, as always: check your blood sugars and LOOK AFTER YOURSELF. If you can, avoid giving in to the munchie temptation, I'm terrible at that but gaining excess weed-weight isn't going to help with any depression. As a rule I also only smoke weed after all my responsibilities for the day have been completed and find that this is a very good way of remaining productive as a pot smoker. Showing up to work or school high is likely not going to get you very far in life.

I wish you all the best! I hope this helped :)

speak the truth truth! no but seriously i am a 20 years old type 1 diabetic, ive had diabetes for ten years it blows....i have smoked for seven of those ten years. it helps me regulate a dialy eating schedule, also makes it easier to eat/drink sugar free/"normaly gross tasting food" smoking mary jane also lower stress which can cause high blood sugar which in turn can cause in a major case loss of limbs.... not only that

Illegality , especially in a corrupt consumer economy DOES NOT equal immorality wrong doing danger or uselessness. Granted smoking Marijuana is not the best way to manage blood glucose levels and can cause forgetfulness, but be it positive or negative, it should in no way be discredited for the obviously noticeable effects it has on some peoples blood glucose levels. I should be handled with care and used responsibly the same as any recreational or prescription substance.

My friend is a type 1 diabetic who suffers from migraines. Marijuana has been a major factor in pain management along with Noni Juice, coffee and liquid Cholorophyll. Besides the occasianal "Munchies" my friend has seen their A1C drop from 10.8 to 8.3 to 7.0 while lossing 8lbs. The numbers don't lie. Please have your friend check her blood sugars before she partakes in a session and then check 15 to 20 minutes afterwards(preferebly before caving in to the munchies).

God Bless you all

smoking pot lowers blood sugar, if you take blood sugar lowering meds in addition to smoking pot..you can have a serious, serious, bad effect..Don't do it. the people who can smoke without significant ill effect, do not have diabetes very much...

1) Learn grammar.

2) This is a type one diabetes board and therefore, there is no such thing as "do not have diabetes very much".

3) I apologize for 'making an ass out of you and me', but from your post I get the impression that you are neither a sufferer of type one diabetes, a pot smoker, nor a medical doctor, and therefore you should not be discussing things that you have no experience with.

I think they have a word for you Mr Turner, oh yes! IGNORANT!

Maybe try living with this disease for a couple years/ decades and report back. I would be very interested to see how much your opinion changes.
