Dude you couldn't be any more wrong. im a type one diabetic and almost never take insulin. I'm also a frequent marijuana smoker because of the studies that prove its aid in sugar metabolizing. And its only illegal because it was threatening the paper and lumber industries back in the 30's. The only mental effect it has is making people happy and hungry. You would have to smoke the equivalent of your body weight to overdose and smoking. more than an ounce puts people to sleep. i would encourage you to do some web huntingh yourself.

as someone who has had type 1 for 35 years. and have smoked pot for 30 of those years. the few time I have not my a1c's double form when I smoke. I recently quit to try to pass a drug test for a drafting job and I noticed that I had to take twice as much insulin. the one thing I have to watch is using it to much I end up with a lot of low's. my personal suggestion is moderation. but to me I feel it has saved my life.

The majority of these posts are ridiculous. A lot of people, who don't have diabetes, replying to something that they know nothing about. I use an insulin pump and use glucose sensors that continuously monitor my glucose. To my suprise, when I smoke marijuana my glucose levels actually drop. Not only that my ABC has dropped to a 6.0. And as for forgetting to do the important things due to short term memory loss. Obviously you have no idea what happens to diabetics when they forget their insulin. Or how about the carcinogens from smoking it? Yeah that is a good point... except for that you find worse chemicals in everyday items than smoking pot. Currently, people smarter than the majority of you nay-sayers are working on any correlation between positives and negatives of marijuana related to diabetes. How about you stop answering about a topic that you know nothing about.

I am a type 1 diabetic and I have been since the age of 12. Not nearly as long as your son and I am certainly not a doctor but, it also sounds like your son may have had a different- unrelated underlying issue. I also have ADD and I've been diagnosed with ADD since kindergarten. I know at times I would lose focus because I got bored or distracted. I smoke pot, and at first I smoked all the time. It gave me the munchies but I quickly had to learn that, if I wanted to smoke than, I couldn't eat a lot because my sugars would spoke. This is when pot helped my diabetes. I would smoke lot, it would speed up my mo tabloids and instead of eating (opting out, knowing i was only "feeling" hungry) my sugars would drop where they needed to be. At first, smoking for me was fun and something new, then it turned into a learning how to control myself under the influence. Now, I feel that marijuana helps me focus similar to how aderol, only, I don't feel I am putting hard chemicals into my body.

I say all of this because, I am aware that I have a different cUse of my mind wondering, losing focus and maybe even being the cause of mood swings. It really doesn't sound like diabetes or pot. It sounds like something that is unrelated that needs to be treated to help treat these other conditions. Like, depression may be causing him to want to give up, not being able to see past tomorrow. Or, he could be like me, suffering from ADD but if he is untreated or isn't actively working on it, it can cause other parts of his life to fall apart and he is not understanding why or how it keeps getting that way.

I would highly suggest having talk to a pharapist or a psychiatrist to see if there is something else underlying these issues.
On a side note:
I believe anyone with diabetes (1 or 2) can smoke pot as long as they understand or learn how to control a situation that may occur. It's called researching and learning control.

That's vey sad --- I'm sorry to hear what your son is going through.

I have type-1 diabetes and have had it for 9 years. I'm 45 now.

I honestly don't know if pot affected your son's development growing up -- it seems like the jury is still out on the developmental effect of pot on young people.

However, it may also be (unrelated to the pot) that he has ADHD (whether that is related to pot, I have no idea.) I also have ADHD and his symptoms all sound very likely. Might be something to look into.

He may also just be going through an extremely hard time in his life and be somewhat disfunctional as a result.

I wish I knew more that could help. Whether it's pot or not, I'd just talk to him and try to feel what he's going through. If my kidneys were failing I'd have trouble concentrating too!

Good luck to you both. I too wish there were more cannabis / type-1 studies to offer you more information but the schedule-1 status has hindered so much research. Hopefully that will change soon.

Hi I'm not saying who I am but I'm also an type 1 diabetic and you both are wrong. I'm sorry if your friend is smoking but in all honest opinion you're not going to lose all sense of how you're going to test your blood sugar and take your shots. I'm a pot user as well and I've been smoking ever sense I was 9 and I know that's really bad but truth is its how life works and marijuana does indeed help stabilize blood sugar.

So where are your facts. You must be smoking also. Smoking marijuana is a drug and it does change your thinking and mind. The only thing marijuana does is put you in a drunk mode that you can't rationalize clearly. You think drive drunk on alcohol is dangerous marijuana is worse plus over long periods of time it destroys brain cells.

I know this was over a year ago but I can tell you that I'm a type one who doesn't use marijuana and I've had similar experiences to your son, while not as severe I'd say it's a combination of damage from the insulin shock and just who your son is, I'm sure he went through a period where he got fed up and didn't care about his diabetes anymore, he got what we call diabetes burn out. Only the damage that came from his burn out was more severe than some experience... I can tell you other people have died from their burn out very quickly. It happens to all of us at some point and some of us more than others. I'm sorry your son is or was going through that but know that this is a very hard condition to deal with which is something that no one but those of us who have it understand which makes it just that much harder. I know having been diagnosed as an adult that my on my best day with this disease I feel worse than I ever did on my worst days without it. You can't blame someone or something for giving up, less than 100 years ago it was a death sentence to be diagnosed, and what we have now is equivalent to a bandaid on a fatal bullet wound.

People who think that the government is looking out for your best interest are the definition of ignorance. Cannabis stabilizes your glucose levels.
Btw if you look at the death census of Newtown Connecticut in 2012 the year and place of the Sandy hook elementary school shooting it deathtolls for that year are 0... Thank you usa government.

My son was 20 years old when diagnosed w type one. Had aver bad doctor at Kaiser with no people skills. My son was told to start insulin ASAP with barely any instructions. He was non compliant for many years. He eventually start insulin therapy but at 30 or sooner and because of denial developed retinopathy. Had injection to both eyes to stop the bleeding. Had cataracts. Then needed a vitrectomy. Lenses in both eyes. Resulting in little improvement to his vision. Needless to say his drivers liscence was taken away. He also has kidney issues, gastro paresis. He has been in and out of the hospital at least two times a month. Does not eat regularly as diabetics should. Has low blood sugars at least once a week. And is addicted to marijuana. Even without a definitive answer that marijuana does affect diabetes how can one continue to ingest this so called mild drug. Major Depression starts because you think there is no way better. But how about stopping smoking. Find something other than marijuana in what could be a productive life. And if you are enabling your friend. I urge you to rethink. Cause you are just hastening the inevitable cruelty to your friend. Super concerned.thanks

Hey there if it makes you feel better I do t smoke at all and that's me to a tee (beside messy house) I'm so up and down and moody but it's from blood sugars being all over the place. Iv had diabetes 23 years and got all the complications.... I sleep at unusual times.. I can function off 4 hours sleep... I can be happy and then snap, I finished year 11 and just passed.. Done many courses that never completed.... I'm 30 now trying to get my liscence but even have trouble focusing to get that... It's very hard and we have a lot to deal with and the more someone tries to tell you they understand the mire you want to slap them!
It would be hard being a parent or friend with diabetes but sometimes they need space and all you need to do is text or call and let them know you are there and thinking of them... That's from personal experience anyway :) hope it sorts out

Is it possible there is some other underlying conditions that effect your son? Manic depression, bipolar disorder? I only ask because the behaviors you describe fit my older brother to a T and he's never touched an illegal substance in his life.
