Amazing! When I was younger, this terrified me. It would give me a feeling of being lost and not knowing how to get back to where I needed to be. I remember crying over this many times, usually when I was ill or my childhood ear problems were at their peak. That feeling always made me have one surreal dream (nightmare at the time). If the dream came first, I would wake up to the vision issues afterward.

The dream had me running as fast as I could go on a GIANT (mountain size) round object (I remember thinking it was an eyeball). Yet at the same time I was holding that exact same round object in my hand, and it was very VERY tiny. The nightmare of it was that the tiny object felt large, like I couldn't fit my arms around it and the one I was running on felt like I didn't have room to move my own two feet around and was going to fell off. I still have those dreams, but now I've learned to realize it's a dream and I drop the small object to end the bad feelings and wake up to no vision issues.

During my later teen years this had stopped happening completely. About 5 or 6 years ago it started to happen randomly every other week or so. Now it happens very frequently, many times a week and can last from only a few minutes to a few hours. It's different now though. Now I actually kind of enjoy it. 90% of the time it's when I am doing coding on the computer or photo editing. Everything will pull in and fall back like a scene on a movie when they show the killer in a zoom in. I can still see everything perfectly and in fact seemingly in more detail (whether this is just an illusion or not, I'm not too sure). I can look away and around and it will go back to normal until I stop looking around for a few seconds, but then whatever area I stopped to look at will simply fall back again.

Like a few of you mentioned before, if I think about it or try to initiate it myself, it will easily occur. I have never had a change of hearing when this happened (other than my childhood ear infections and hearing issues that have since never occurred). Taste/smells remains the same. Touch is slightly off since things I am holding feel normal but my perception says otherwise. Also never had a migraine during or around it.

Sorry for the long book! It's just that every time I told someone about it they had no clue what I was talking about and the one time I mentioned it to a doctor he referred me to an ophthalmologist who would said I was 20/20 and it was probably just eye strain. I never thought to look it up until this very moment, only to find I am no where near the only one! I just thought I would throw my details out there. Thank you to the people who named "Alice In Wonderland Syndrome", it seems to fit perfectly! :-D

wow i am so surprised that others have the same condition.
I remember when I was in primary school about 6 years old and i was focusing on my teacher, then all of a sudden everything seemed very distant. My friend that was arms length away, seemed like miles away. I really enjoyed it, because it was a new sensation. I use to get it alot when I was younger, but as I grew into my teens it didn't happen as much. I am now 20 years old and I'm experiencing it right as I'm typing, that is why I decided to look into it.

I think that it has something to do with a dream I had when I was very young. I was dreaming that there was this really small mouse, then all of a sudden it changes into a giant rocky creature, sort of like The Thing from fantastic four. It's hard to explain, but the sudden shift from small to large gave me this really wierd feeling that I can vaigly remember. I could not wrap my mind around what that feeling was. But the next day at school that condition started happening to me.

I would really like to know what is the name of the condition.

Im having the feeling as I'm typing right now. I never really thought anything of it, and actually kinda feel tripped out. RIGHT now as Im looking down at my keyboard I feel like Im a Giant ! Its actually crazy. Never thought anyone else would show these types of symptoms. BUT it hasn't happened to me in a while at all. Just now though I was playing piano. Very calm quite environment. I seem to be getting this feeling everytime when Im focused on something. Almost feel like Im in my own little world. I don't really mind it, because it takes my mind off of the day to day problems. I almost feel like my mind is free and nothing really bothers me. I actually feel happy. I think it has something to do with my eyes. Im supposed to wear glasses.

TRY this next time it happens to you: Just hold your finger far away from you, and focus on your finger. Then slowley bring it closer to your nose. When I do this I feel like Im almost going cross eyed although the finger stays focused. It really trippy.

IF YOU WANT IT TO GO AWAY THO TRY THIS : Find a dark room, and a bright room. Now in the dark room keep all the lights off and turn on the lights in the brighter room. I use my kitchen and living room. Make sure that you have some room and dont walk into something, because your eyes adjust very slowly in this stage. Now try walking slowly back and forth from the dark room into the bright room spending anything between 10-15 seconds in each. While your walking don't focus on anything too much and just look around the room.

dont take me word for word, because this is just my theory. But I think what happens if you focus on one thing or are in a relaxing environment, lets say, your on your computer, watching TV or anything where your eyes dont have to re-focus alot, the eye muscles get lazy, which causes this effect. Now if you switch between a dark and a light room for example, your muslces are forced to be used and the eyes will be able to focus properly again.

I hope this helps some of you guys. It always does the trick for me. I just did this and I'm already feeling normal again. So next time, just give it a try. If it doesn't work theres no harm done.

To ease your minds a little bit. I don't think this is anything serius ;-)

Omg btw... I used to have THE SAME dream when I was younger ! it made me feel horrible and almost sick ! Just as I read the post it reminded me of it. Im glad I found someone to share it with :-) I can't really remember what the object was tho. It never really revealed itsself. it was more of a feeling than an actual object, although it felt like there was an object. hard to explain. Large tiny... Crazy stuff.

Thanks to everyone for sharing ! :-D

Hi, I have the same problem. It first started a few years ago. I would wake up running to my moms room. I would run in there, crying. I'd say "Mom, help! Make it stop!". She would just say, "Go back to bed. You're sleep walking." I wasn't! I've been having it every night now since Christmas night, last year =(((((Today:1/1/11). Everything I see like much farther away and smaller. Everything also looks sharper, like in HD. Like you said, details and texture look very, strange. Like it's far away, too. Please write back, I want to hear more about what's going on from your point of view.

I am SO surprised that this is a problem for so many people! I had this same thing happen when I was young (I'm 32 now). I especially remember it happening when I had a fever, but there were times it would happen when I was not ill. I would have the same very disturbing dream that I could not describe. Still can't, but can remember the feeling had with it. And my mother would come into my room and turn on the light because I was screaming for her and the light on my ceiling would look very far away. Very clear and detailed, but very very far away. All of the things in my room would look that way. And she would ask me what was wrong and I couldn't tell her all I could say is "I don't know".

When I got a bit older 11-12 and teen years I would have this happen at random times during the day. Not just at night, although I would still have the nightmare. I would be in our kitchen and this anxious feeling would come over me and my sight would switch to the far away vision. I have not had this happen for a very long time. I honestly do not remember the last time it happened. Perhaps I grew out of it?

And now, my 5 year old son is experiencing the same thing! He recently had a virus and ran a fever and woke up screaming in the night. He did not describe things looking really far away then, but now two days later at the dinner table he said that everything looked really far away. And when he went to bed tonight, the same comment and he was scared. There has got to be an explanation for this hasn't there???

- I have found another forum about this: ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed
Have copied my post here:

Hi all... Please read this, as I too experience this phenomenom but always with an additional sensory 'change' that no-one else seems to have mentioned.

I've signed up for this forum as I've not found much information on this anywhere else - and I'm very interested in finding out more about it. If anyone has any links to any research done on this subject please share!!

I'm 24 years old - and ever since I was very young I've experienced this feeling/vision of things looking far away. It used to happen when I was poorly or had a fever as a youngster, but this still happens to me now.

It seems like everything has moved away from you - something that you might be focusing on like the TV looks a lot smaller and further away (Kind of like looking through binoculars the wrong way around??). If I close my eyes and look up, it feels like the room is falling away from me slowly (I do not feel a falling sensation - just feels like everything is being pulled away from me!)

And all this is accompanied by a very strange feeling that I cannot describe. As someone said earlier - it's a bit like vertigo without the spinning sensation.

However, something that no-one else has mentioned here that I always feel is a really different touch sensation. This has ALWAYS accompanied the 'further away' feeling -

Everything I touch feels bigger, thicker or heavier. For example, if I grab my thumb in my fist while this further away stuff is going on, it feels gigantic in my hand, even though I am perceiving it as being completely normal!

Has anyone else experienced this?

When I was young it used to scare me quite alot, now I'm older it doesn't bother me as much.

One thing to note is that I have NEVER had night terrors as such, but a few times when I was about 12-13 I experienced what is called (amusingly enough) Exploding Head Syndrome.

i have experienced all of these symptoms for as long as i can remember. its a little comforting knowing im not crazy. it used to happen just a couple times a year, probably started as early as ten years old.now it has been occurring multiple times a mnth (im 27) and i have been getting a bit worried. it usually happens at night, thankfully never when i have been working or driving. i have noticed it also happens when im straining my eyes alot, or any pressure on them. i recently got a facial, and i had to wear this eye wear that slightly put pressure on my eyes, and when she took the eye wear off it happened. i think ive mastered how to fix it:
i look at something very close up, nose almost touching it(usually my hand, or anything near by). stare at it for a min, then slowly pull it away from my face. although this trick usually works, the more this is happening the more worried i get that it could be something more serious. if anyone finds anything out post it! if it keeps happening im going to seek out a specialist.

ive had this problem all my life trying to explain to my parents what was going non was so difficult been only 6 or 7 they sent me to an optitions but they could find nothing wrong.iam 42 now and it still happens to me reading all these people have expeirienced the same thing make me feel abit better . i thought i was the only 1 when it happens to me if i turn my head or eyes quickly at different objects it soon goes or if i go for a walk outside. it seems to happen more at night but not always. recently my daughter said she has experience the same feeling. it could be a genetic problem so ask family members if they have the problem.

I was in 4th grade when it started for me. It still happens every once in a while now... twenty years later. I never thought about counting how many times a year. When I spoke up in 4th grade to a teacher they sent me home saying I had "mono." Of course the doctor didn't agree with them. The doctor thought it was caused by an imbalance of the fluids in the ear. He told me to take an allergy medicine because it helps restore the chemicals. It works some of the time. Today it's lasted longer than normal, so I thought I'd try to see if anything was written. While it doesn't stop the fact it happens... I take comfort in knowing I'm not the only one out there with this problem.

If any one of you is a photographer you'll understand how i see things when this happens to me. It's like viewing the world with a fisheye lens. I absolutely enjoy it btw. When i was younger it happened more often, usually when i have a fever and my eyes and brain are tired from little and irregular sleeping or lack of it.

This happened to me yesterday and i enjoyed it but found that if i turned in bed it went away. So it has to be something also related to the ear and your sens of direction.

I am glad i'm not the only one but it seems my attacks are less severe than most of you. If i focus i can overcome the disturbance but only for a while.
