I have just read these posts from people who have had gb removal and my question is:  Why on earth are any of you still drinking alcohol when you all have bad reactions?  I love a glass or two of red wine but I would never drink it again if it gave me pain.  Why do you all feel you HAVE to drink????  I believe it is call masochism (which is actually in my medical dictionary!!!)

I had my gallbladder out awhile ago, because I had many small stones, so they decided to take the whole thing out! Everytime I drink alcohol I feel sick, I still occasionally get the sane pain in my abdominal area, but my back or liver kinda spot hurts like you wouldn't believe... I'm not sure why.. If it's my liver. Or somthing else, I don't wanna stop social drinking, anything I can do to make the excruciating pain go away I'll do .. :(

My surgeon had not warned me about drinking avoiding alcohol. Well I drank a week after my surgery, and only had 2 beers before I had an attack. My pain was so bad and alarming that night that I went to the ER. They gave me a shot and put a heated blanket on my upper abdomen. I went to my surgeon the next week for a check up. I told him about my visit to the ER. He explained the cause of it to me a little. It is the sphincter of oddi that reacts to the alcohol. He said that this sphincter will spasm and shoot bile back up my chest and thats why it hurts so bad. He recommended that I not drink for 6 months and that if I have an attack that I use a heating pad. It has now been 2 years since my surgery and I still have these muscle spasms. I do not know what to do about them and they are quite annoying.

I had my gallbladder removed labor day weekend 2011 and was drinking and back to normal the weekend after surgery. late october i drank one mixed vodka drink and was vomiting so bad and had intense pain in my gallbladder area. the pain was so intense that i could hardly breathe. i had vodka one more time a few months later and the exact symptoms returned immediately. the pain only seemed to come when i drank vodka (i drink whiskey, beer, wine, and champagne on a regular basis) but recently i've started to have pain no matter what kind of alcohol i drink. the pain will hit me very hard and will only lasts for about five minutes and after the cramping stops and i'm fine. i don't ever experience pain the next morning, just when i'm drinking and then have to stop. i wonder if the pain occurs because of the food i ate before i started drinking? does this happen to anyone else?

I had a similar experience. I have always been ok with alcohol. Never had a hangover etc etc. Before the surgery I would have a bottle of wine with my mum on a Friday night and be fine. However, after the surgery I found it have me headaches and was unusually effective.

However, now a month later I am fine. I am wondering if it has a lot to do with remnants of anaesthetic in yr body or the painkillers? I made sure not to try alcohol until i was a week clear of the drugs.

Hello and thank you so much for your replies! Since my posting he has moved on to another type of alcohol and tried Jack Daniels (Whiskey) and diet coke, and everything was fine! He has tried it on the last 3 occassions and had no problems. Of course, he hasn't went overboard with it and drank more than a couple of drinks at a time, but it settled with no problems. We are so glad that he finally found something. We are wondering if maybe it's because the other drinks naturally have alot more sugar in them. He didn't try Jack before now as we assumed that would be the hardest on his stomach of anything, but that's certainly not the case.
I hope you guys are as fortunate! I would be interested to know if it worked for you, too!

It's been almost 2 years since my GB was removed. I like to have two beers each evening (max) but I ALWAYS get cramps and diarrhea the next day.

I was a bit weary after having my gallbladder removed almost 2 months ago, to drink alcohol. Had some drinks last night. And didn't experience ANY problems at all. I guess it's different for everybody.

I should research online earlier.  The "sickness" is not the result of alcoholism; it is from the gallbladder removal.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

My husband was a good drinker 3 years before.  After the surgery, if he drinks more than two glasses of wine, beer, "white" drink, then he will SICK for the next 4 days.  For example, he will sleep in the bathroom and talk/walk funny, just like a disability person.  At the time, I thought it was the result of too much alcohol.   Now, I know.

Is there anything he can do to go back and drink? he did not want to stop drinking.

July 3 2012 I lost my gall bladder. I am from the south and love fried foods along with a 12 pack of Buds. Now it's July 8th and I have already eaten Home made chicken pot pie, mash taters, green beans  3eggs pancakes pimento cheese coffee and had two beers right after 10 am hope I'm just lucky because I've felt better than I felt in 10years and I'm 51 yrs old.  Been long time since not having to deal with chest pains. Some times things just get in your mind you have to be tough I'm not going to just give up having a few beers.

i had my gall bladder out over a year and a half ago. The only thing I ever did drink was smirnoff and mikes hard. (both liquor, vodka). & I've never had any problems. Like i can drink a whole six pack and get completely wasted and have no problems. my stomach has hurt a couple times from drinking that much, but only because i drink them oh so very fast. I don't take straight shots anymore, i'm scared too. but everything else i can handle. i mean, i don't drink everyday. i only drink when theirs a party. maybe it depends how often, or how much a person can take?

Man all these horror stories I'm confused. Because my mother had her GB taken out and can have several glasses of wine and be fine next day, just a little diarrhea. She can also eat sausage mcmuffins. Now my other friend had hers taken out and her sister taken out and they drink like fish all night! No major hangovers and come to work next day after partying. They drink about 4 times a week. One drinks long islands ice teas. The other shots. So it's an individual thing.
Someone mentioned APARAGUS TABLETS two hrs before drinking. Has anyone tried them?
