I am 28 and just had my gullbladder taken out a week ago and have not yet attempted to take a drink of alcohol. I used to stay up for days drinking and it may have had something to do with my gullbladder going bad. Anyways I just saw this because I am very upset and need a drink but see alot of you started only a week or two after surgery. Maybe that is why you guys are getting sick. You're bodies are not healed yet. I still have occasional diarrhea and some pain so that is why I haven't drank yet. I also think it will be harder to drink like we did because the gullbladder soaked up most of the alcohol or produced the bile before it hit the liver and now all we have is the liver soaking up that alcohol. I do agree that everyone is different and maybe it is what you guys are eating. I don't know I guess I just wanted to try and add my two cents.

I am a musician and I normally have 2 or 3 drinks over the course of a performance to loosen up. 3 days ago , 10 days after my gallbladder was removed I finally hit the stage again. Over the course of the night I had my usual 3 drinks , actually maybe it was 4 a double Jack , and 2 Jaegermeisters . By the last set I could not play the guitar I was so trashed ! This was so unusual , I have to say that its the first time it has ever happened , in 25 + years of performing. I woke up later that morning in severe pain , felt much like another gallbladder attack. It did subside after I ate a little .

Well. I decided to give up after 5 years of gallstones and have the dang thing removed. I am over a week from surgery and am getting married. Thanks to these horror stories I have canceled my bachelorette party and gave away the champagne my fiancé and I were supposed to toast with at out wedding.
If I'd had known I was giving up all these things I would have just put up with the pain a few more weeks.

It all depends on you and your body. It took me two weeks after my surgery to drink but only because of an argument. I wanted to wait atleast 2 to 6 months for my body to heal up. Ever since I have had no hangovers for some reason. I read all of the comments above and it seems like their bodies aren't used to the alcohol because they started drinking too early after surgery and their bodies weren't adjusted yet. I would say to get the surgery because it does make a huge difference as far as any past pain you've had. I do know that my experience with getting my gallbladder taken out makes my bowl movement messed up to where I have diarrhea alot or have to use the bathroom minutes or even seconds after a meal. Good luck to you and God bless.

Hey AliciaG (I know you posted four years ago but thought I would give it a shot anyways) I am 21 and just had my gallbladder out four days ago. I have not had tried drinking yet but was really hoping I could have a glass of wine or two on christmas and newyears! I am still in university and these stories are horrifying so I was wondering which foods specifically you recommend eating before a night of drinking?? Are you saying stay away from greasy meals before drinking and eat whole grains, lean meats, veggies etc? But you can still eat greasy foods sometimes?

Hello I was just going to try and repost about drinking alcohol after surgery. I think it is up to the persons body that takes in the alcohol. Some can and some can't. I had mine removed 2 weeks before drinking. I only drank because I got very angry and upset about some things. I wasn't going to drink until a couple months after but I didn't. Anyways I opened a 24 oz can of beer and poured it into a glass with a sprinkle of salt. It felt a little weird but I had no pain after that.I've had no hangovers what so ever after drinking shots of liquor too. I did drink some vodka which I can't stand but I was in the mood for lemon that night and mixed a bottle of citrus vodka with some coke. The next day I did wake up feeling very ill and puked up green bile and my diarrhea was green as well. I think I had too much vodka and not enough coke or not enough food in my system to cure my stomach that night. Plus I don't ever drink vodka. After the surgery I've lost weight as well. I am not a every other day drinker like I was before the surgery and I keep away from the spicy foods and greasy foods as much as I can. I still get my hot wings here and there. Which is actually where I've noticed having cramping in both lower ribs the few past days. I looked it up and it says that it could possibly be caused from Irritable Bowel Syndrome which I think I picked up after the surgery. I've had diarrhea every day since the surgery no matter if I drink or eat or not. If you are worried about drinking and what to eat, I would recommend trying crackers and stuff like that and then work your way up to other stuff. If I were you I'd try to stay away from fast food and greasy stuff because thats where I started to mess up again and now I'm having pain from it, but like I said maybe thats just me and maybe you won't have any of the problems or maybe you won't be able to drink anything at all. I think you will be just fine with a glass of wine or two but take it slow and see how you feel. If you also have on going diarrhea tell your doctor ASAP and see if they can prescribe anti diarrhea medication which will help out alot but it might also cause you to be constipated. Either way there are good things about it and bad things about it every time lol. Merry Christmas and happy new years to everybody. I wish you all the best of luck. God bless

omg... i am one of the unlucky people who can no longer have alcohol since having my gallbladder removed (it was removed April 2012).  I drank a month or so after and was able to "get drunk" for months following with no issues, however recently (the last couple months) when i get drunk i have more than a normal hangover, i am fine for a few hours upon getting up, able to make coffee, do dishes, etc... then all of a sudden, up comes the gatorade i drank for breakfast along with any FOOD i had...ugh.  So then i decide, well lets just try gatorade, or water with NO food.... still comes back up, its like it hits my stomach and turns into this hard ball and within 20 mins im vomitting, violently.  I even ate popcicles and still got sick. i stay sick for almost 24 hours after that, vomitting and diahrrea (sp?).  It is definelty not worth drinking for me, and my case is one in its own, everyone is different, all i can say is try it out if you must, if you get sick like this, its obviously your bodies way of saying "hey, sober up! i cant take this poison anymore...." luckily for me im fun with or without alcohol :) hope this helps someone.

I had my gallbladder taken out laparascopic 6 days ago. I used to be an occasional drinker (wine or mixed drinks here and there), until today. I had 1 glass of Merlot wine and 30 minutes later, I had what felt like a gallbladder attack. It hurt so bad, just like it would before I had the surgery. I will NEVER drink again. I read that if you keep drinking that it could lead to alcohol poisoning and I will NOT take that chance. The reason I had the surgery in the 1st place, was so I could live a normal life again. Nobody has to tell me twice... I'm done with alcohol!

I wanted to post a counter-point to a lot of the stories here. I am a 31 year old male, and had my gallbladder out (laproscopic) about a week and a half ago. I gave myself about a week to heal up, but since then I've had alcohol on two separate nights (maybe 4 drinks one night, 7 drinks another night), with no negative effects at all. I haven't even had to adjust my diet -- one morning I had a tex-mex breakfast plate with chorizo & egg, refried beans, potatoes, flour tortillas, all DRENCHED with queso, plus coffee, and I was FINE.

There is no rule on how it will affect you. You are not necessarily doomed. Good luck!

I am 3 weeks post-op I have had the usual problems (bloating, incision pain, unexplainable weight gain, nausea and vomiting, itchy skin, chest pressure, sleep difficulty, etc.) But alcohol is, like, the only thing that doesn't bother me! I have had a drink almost everyday since surgery and its actually the only time I can keep any food down for more than 15 minutes! The food ALWAYS come back up eventually, as usual, which is why I don't understand the weight gain! No exercise I guess. I don't know. 3 weeks and I'm still miserable and useless.

I was advised to avoid alcohol for at least 4-6 weeks after my cholecystectomy. I haven't imbibed as of yet (wk 5). My birthday and my son's Confirmation party are approaching and I intended having a glass of prosecco and a glass of Nero d'Avola in celebration on the day. However, having read the most helpful posts here I've decided not to risk it. I want to enjoy the day and the best thing is to stay clear of the demon drink by the sound of it! :-)
