I have been suffering with what started as an aching left testicle for the past week. On Saturday I started getting aches and pains in my right testicle aswell. Sunday morning I woke up with lower abdo pains. This would switch from having left sided abdo/testicle pain to a few hours later having right sided abdo/testicle pains. I went and visited an on call doctor after being told to by a health advisor.

He diagnosed me with Epididymitis and I was prescribed with 250mg Ciprofloxacin for 5 days. It's monday now and I am in more pain than ever, experiencing intermittent sharp pains in either testicle and increasing bladder pains. I have no difficulty or pain passing urine nor am I passing blood. I have no lumps but lots of swelling!

Has anyone else suffered epididymitis? How long before you recovered? Is it a bad idea to visit the doctor a day after I last saw him if I have increasing pain?

I am also worried about testicle torsion. How likely is it that epididymitis will develop into testicle torsion? Are my chances increased with this inflammation?
Hey mate,
I have had epididymitis for 8 months now. My 3rd urologist gave me a different diagnosis - he said it was 'unexplained nerve condition' that is affecting my epididymitis. In short antibiotics won't do a thing. He said to be patient - it will go away in time. I am 28 and last week he said don't worry - it won't last past .......age, (I won't mention the number because it won't make you feel great). So I have started looking at forums to see if people are having luck with alternative treatments. The meds I am on are - Neurontin (for nerves), xanax (neurological anxiety pill - I think) and an inflamatory. However these days - I still tale the meds regularly but ice gives me the greatest immediate relief. Last night I found this:

He began to give me nerve blocks (freezing) in the nerves in my lower abdomin and at the top sides of the scrotum. It would freeze for a couple of hours and go back. Every two weeks I would get the shot. And slowly the pain subsided and then the shots became every month, then two months and after a couple months it was completely gone.

I will bring this up with my urologist on my next visit. I can't just wait and wait and wait for epi..... do go away in time. If I didn't really want kids so much - I would probably get them chopped and continue living - and playing sport etc.

If the above info is accurate - it is worrying that I am bringing this info. forward rather than a doctor or urologist. Stop sending people to the moon and start spending more on common health problem that we know little about!!!

Hi, Ali Baba,

I was really interested in your post. Like you, I've been trawling the net looking at forums etc to get other people's experiences and some accurate information, and it's really frustrating.
I'm 51 and I've had epididymitis for three months now and my urologist says that, while it may get better and worse from time to time, it will never go away. Like you, I found the guy on the net talking about a nerve block and had to introduce the topic to my doctor. He is considering it and the hospital I go to has a pain clinic where they may do this. I go to my doc this week and will discuss this topic in more detail. I have found out that this doesn't work for many people, but I can't get a figure on it. I do know that if it works then there's a good chance that a denervation operation will be successful and that this is pretty effective for those people for whom a nerve block works.
I'd like to keep in touch to get more details about your experience and to share information. At the moment I'd like to find out how effective Neurontin is.
Hope we can communicate about this because I'm finding it hard and want to do everything I can to help myself and others.

Hey Guys,

It has been a long time since I last posted.

I have had nerve related epidymitis for just over 2 years now - I am 30 years old - I have always been fit and healthy and have played sports for a number of years at a National League level. So my lifestyle has nothing to do with my condition at all.

I asked my doctor about the freeze block injections and he said that he wouldn't try it with me as I wasn't getting worse with my condition and therefore it didn't warrant it yet. I wasn't too happy as I want to trry something - but I took his advice.

When I started going to the gym and lifting weights - just 30kg stuff to start with - I would experience swelling afterwards and some discomfort. But the good news is - 4 months later - I don't get increased swelling and I have nearly trebled my weights - so there is a little hope for those that enjoy exercise.

My day to day life is unaffected although I experience discomfort from time to time - I know it won't get worse that a certain point. With that knowledge - I try and blank the discomfort out. (Not always easy).

I am still taking the same medicine and dosage my first post which is worrying as it is a lot of medicine.

I hope some of my message - makes it easier for those of you that think life is over as we have enjoyed in years gone by.

If anyone else can share some light on the matter or add you experiences - there are many of us who would be very thankful! The more information we can share the better!

Best of luck!
Ali

I have had this condition for about 3 years now on and off. This time around it is bad and i am getting a bit of abdo pain as well. I have had it for 6 weeks this time. I am on pain killers and i have been offered nerve pain tablets but the doctor said that they can make you sleepy and i am a fire fighter which may be a problem on nights so i have said no to them for a while.

I will let you know how i get on.

All these post seem very interesting. I am 21 years old and was diagnosed with epididymitis exactly one week ago. The doctors I have talked to all have said that its not really a big deal, but after reading here I became a little nervous. I have never had any pain with this, but have alot of swelling. I was prescribed cipro flaxin and an anti inflammatory but still don't have noticeable results. The swelling may have gone down a bit but am just getting a little worried because I heard that there should be results within around 3 days. Has anyone heard how long it may take?

Taking them may take a couple weeks to see the full effects. It's been a few days since you last posted, so have you seen any improvements yet or are you still suffering from the symptoms? If you are, it might be a good idea to talk to your doctor about the efficacy of the drug and if you might need to change the dose. PLease keep us posted!

Hello There. I have had epidydymitid since chrismas. What started as a pain in my left testicle and was diagnoses as a hernia. The pain seems to come and go left side right side and in the middle. I am currently trying
natural methods to rid me of it. Oil of Oregano in drops, cranberry in a chewable form and a herb called Cleevers also in drops. :'(

i'm 34 and i've now had epididimytis for going on 5 months. i'd never heard of it before and i wish i never had. it first started with a slight shooting pain in the lower abdoment every so often. like if there was a path between the abdomen and the testicle that the pain would travel on. then an odd feeling in the left testicle kind of like it was achy. but just slightly. like blue balls or something. so iw ent to the doctor thinking i might have a hernia after a couple of days of discomfort. i was diagnosed with epididimytis and prostatitis. he put me on two weeks of doxycycline and sent me on my way. i was under the impression that i'd be on the road to recovery in a day or two. wrong! the next day, the pain had gone from an annoying 2 or so to an excruciating 8 or 9. and it only got worse. one day, i almost passed out while driving because the pain in my left testicle was so severe. i consulted with another doctor who put me on levaquin for a month. it instantly helped with the pain. but once the script was up, i felt that strange feeling starting to come back again as a dull ache. then he put me on another month of levaquin. same results. so iwent back and got a prescription for bactrim ds. same effect. i've tried acupuncture and chinese herbs, which helped, but became too expensive for me to continue. i've been doing some online research as well and have posted my problem in a natural medicine forum and got some interesting results. one person who replied to my post said that its a good possibilty that i've picked up a yeast infection from my girlfriend. its a very good possibility. i've been with her for 8 years, and over the last 2 or 3, she's complained of persistent yeast infections. the yeast infection explanation made sense to me in several ways. antibiotics didn't help. they helped with the pain. but many antibiotics have anti-inflammatory properties which can help with pain. and antibiotics destroy "good" bacteria which live within us at all times. there's a consatnt battle between yeast, which is a fungus, and bacteria within us. once the good bacteria is depleted, the yeast can easily take over. plus, may antibiotics are made from fungi, which in turn, fuel and feed the yeast. and i noticed after drinking a decent amount of beer one weekend, the discomfort came on strong again. beer is made with yeast. and actually has live yeast still inside. unlike wine, which has been fermented long enough to kill yeast, and liquor, which has been distilled and yeast are killed during that process. the acupunturist also told me to avoid yeast at all cost because it would perpetuate my problem. once i found out all this info, i did mor research and determined that i need to take a probiotic first to reestablish the good bacteria thats been destroyed by the months of antibiotics and thena n antifungal. i haven't found a doctor willing to give me one like duflucan or something like that. thy're all convinced that this is bacterial even though no bacteria has been found in any lab work of mine. so, i'm planning on giving olive leaf exract a try. it comes in capsule form and i'm hoping it will do the trick. i'm not sure if the yeast infection think could apply to any of you or not. but i think treating fungus instead of bacteria is my only hope at this point. i'll post my results once i start the regimen. also, i've been off my antibiotics for 2 or 3 weeks trying to help the rebuilkding process of the good bacteria. and so far, there has been no increse in pain. thanks for listening.

Hi guys,
I really feel your pain. I was diagnosed with epididymitis 6 years ago and suffered from the inflammations and pain for about 2 and 1/2 years. Several urologists just assumed that I had sexual relationships out of the wedlock (it was not the case!) and prescribed several bouts of antibiotics to no avail... Then, I finally traveled to the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and they diagnosed an enlarged prostate that was exerting pressure on an internal nerve. A simple course of alpha-blockers (Flomax), for about two months, took care of the problem! The pain and inflammation totally went away...
I was so angry that I had to live with this for almost 3 years given how easy the solution was, just because most doctors are ignorant of the origins of this problem!
Please have your doctors try and prescribe you alpha-blockers: I never have had any problems since then...
I hope this helps: please post back if you tried alpha blockers and they worked: I would like to know if an enlarged prostate (or similar inflammation of internal muscles) is a common cause of epididymitis and be able to help more people...
