I have recently taken on a second job in the evenings and it has started since then, I also have been having the numbness - pins and needles down my spine but ,have had a back problem where my back just jerks (like hiccups in the bottom of my back) every 30 seconds I can controll this but when I relax it happens,

I have been given diclafenic sodium, dizapan and another medication I cant remember but the dry heaving or "gagging" has only been an issue for the last 3 weeks , its driving me crazy as I work with people with special needs and incontinence and am finding it hard to do my job

Sometimes just the thought of something like a nose running or the thought of a bad smell that isnt there can start it off, hurrying round also makes it happen or thinking about going to work(I love my job) can make this come on.

I hope someone out there finds an answer soon - good luck to you all xx

I've had this dry heaving issue for about 6-7 years now. exactly the same symptoms as most. I tend to experience this when I'm nervious, hungry, have to use the bathroom, when its cold, during a workout or any type of physical activities. I think this might be related to the stomach or something in that area. If you experience the dry heaving during the same scenarios as me think about what gets tensed when these events happen? You tend to tense the abdomen area. I'm going to the GI next wed to discuss this.

i have recently been having this problem and i was a heavy marijuana smoker since i was about 13 but have recently quit, i have 1-2 cigarettes a day and sometimes none but i only get these dry heaves whenever i am finished with my cigarette. i am not oblivious to the fact that this problem is smoke related but i am curious as to what it might be. i did do some post reading but i have only had this problem occur in this recent winter so i understand it's mostly lack of oxygen but it's also only when i am outside so i have a strong feeling it is cold related considering i do not get these symptoms when in a car or another warm environment and knowing other people have the same problems occur with different reasons/symptoms is comforting only for the fact that i am not the only one when i thought i was. so if anyone knows if my problem is equivalent or not please tell. thank you :)

SOLUTION!!! Hi. i am a teacher from singapore and have the similar problem as reported. GAGGING IN THE MORNING AND DURING TENSION. I have tried to Google about the problem and thought that I should return and share with everyone the solutions. THE PROBLEM OF GAGGING IS BECAUSE THE MUSCLE OF THE THROAT NEED TO BE STRETCHED. AND YOU HAVE NOT BEEN DOING THAT, THAT'S Y THE BODY TRY TO GAG. DURING GAGGING, THE TOP OF YOUR MOUTH WILL BE LIFT UP, STRETCHING THE MUSCLE THERE. YOU AN TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR TO KNOW WHAT THE BODY IS TRYING TO DO. TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY, YES.. IMMEDIATELY. THE NEXT DAY MONRONG YOU WILL BE OK . LOOKING INTO THE MIRROR WITH MOUTH WIPE OPEN, CAN YOU SEE AN OPENING, THAT IS YOUR THROAT. USUALLY PPL LIKE US CANNOT REALLY SEE IT. SAY OUT LOUD.. AH....... YOU CAN THEN SEE A BIT OF THE THROAT, AS THE TOP OF THE.MOUTH .LIFT UP AND THE TONGUE GO DOWN. TRY DOING THAT, INITIALLY YOU WILL GAG, IS OK. JUST KEEP SAYING AH...... SEE TRY TO SEE THE THROAT. THE NEXT DAY MORNING DO THE SAME THING BEFORE YOU BRUSH YOUR TEETH...YOU WILL BE OK. THANK YOU.

My dry heaves started when I was in college, when i was 20 and I am now 28. They would occur in the morning, cold weather or during morning exercises or when I get somewhat nervous. Very embarassing, I had to excuse myself from job interviews, meetings with clients, social gatherings. I see some people on here talking about gagging and gagging while brushing there teeth. This is not what happens to me. Picture yourself full out vomitting with not vomit. This is what randomly happens to me out of no where. In the past 2 years, I have been put on Protonix twice ( 6 weeks of treatment) and have found it to be successful. My dry heaves were gone for a full year and forgotton about. I got on a spicy food kick and drank high alcohol beer and my dry heaves slowly came back. I went on protonix again for 6 weeks, minimized the spicy food intake and drank no alcohol again for 6 weeks and my dry heaves are once again gone. Right now I have gone about 5 months and I have had only 2 dry heaves in the cold weather. 2 in 5 months is better than multiple ones every day. I still drink beer(because it is awesome) and dont go overboard on spicy/hot food and im doing ok. If anyone wants to email me to talk my email address is

. I know how embarassing it is to be dry heaver and there is no one around me who knows what I went through and may go through again.

If you are of child-bearing age, you had better get one of those instant-pregnancy tests asap! When my wife was preggo, she would gag/dryheave and even vomit at the slightest smell of (even) routine things such as toothpaste, food being cooked, and, of course... bathrooms!.

Also, folks should know that sudden and unexplained nausea and vomiting are often the first symptoms of a heart attack. Now, chronic dry heaves is obviously something else-- but beware it can be indicative of a heart attack coming on very soon. In any case, I believe it is caused by a sudden chemical imbalance your body is experiencing (for whatever reason).

Could be low thyroid? Vitamin deficiencies?low bile production ? An allergic reaction? Do you need to alkalize becaue you body is too acidic ( 2 tablespoons of natural apple cider vinegar from the health store and 1/4 tsp baking soda in 1/2 glass of water) Chonic appendicitis? Ulcer? I went to and ND that helped me realize that my MD saw that I was on the verge of being low thryroid ( hypothryroid ) but it actually wasn't considered medical shcool textbook low...but the ND addressed it because I was having all they symptoms and signs I finally I began to feel better,

Hello All,

I have been experiencing the exact same issues as most of you.

-Random dry heaves throughout the day, Especially when I am cold.

I have personally been diagnosed with Acid Reflux that could have lead to an ulcer if not treated.  My doctor explained that the bile/acid in your stomach gives the illusion of vomitting and eats away at your stomachs lining.

Some of the things that I have been recommended to do:

First and foremost - Drink 8 cups of water a day to stay hydrated and dilute the acid/bile

Stay away from dark drinks - coffee, liquor, and pops.

Don't smoke - I don't s this is not an issue for me.

No spicy food - this one kills me because I love to eat spicy stuff. - even black pepper can contribute to the problems.

Make sure you take care of your teeth. Plaque contains a large amount of acidic bacteria - good oral hygiene isn't just inportant for your gums and pearly whites, but also your health as a whole. By simply breathing you can drive plaque and the bacteria that comes with it into your stomach. I brush 4 times a day and mouth wash twice.

I hope this helps as I know what you guys are going through.   These are all simple and easy steps to give you a healthier lifestyle. Stay discipline and try all of them out for a month, you'll be surprised with the results! :)

This has been happening to me since I was around 13 or 14. I'm now 18. It's gotten to the point where I am gagging several times a day regardless of what I'm doing. It gets worse when I'm cold, nervous, I have to go to the bathroom, or when I exercise. I drink a lot of Mt. Dew, and I'm wondering if caffeine can be a contributing factor. This thing is honestly ruining my life. I've had to quit all the sports I love to do, and can't do some of the things my friends want to go do because I know I'll start gagging. It's really embarrassing, and nobody has any idea what it is. I went to the ENT recently and he said something about how these flaps on my epiglottis are touching the back of my throat. He gave me some exercises to try to see if it made it better, but it didn't. I hate having people stare at me like I'm some kind of freak...if anyone has any idea of what to do it would be greatly appreciated.

I think it may be stress/anxiety related.  I have had the same thing for about 9 months now.  It happened shortly after having problems with seasonal affected disorder and I took prozac.  I don't take it anymore but I still get occasional gagging dry-heaves.  Sometimes even the thought of me gagging makes me gag.  That's why I believe, at least for me, that it's a physical symptom of anxiety/depression.

I'm 30 and I still get that every now and then. My mother use to call it worry stomach. When I was a child I got it every morning. I always had anxiety so I was always nervous. usually if I had a big test to pass or a field trip I was excited about or just worried about who I was going to walk to school with. It was always the nervousness that made me feel like that. Even till this day if Im nervous about a job interview or a road trip it still happeneds to me

I too experience dry heaves in the morning whenever my throat is dry and it feels as though I can't breath. If I drink some water and clear my sinuses then the feeling passes. But if I don't catch the dry mouth in time then I go into convulsions with dry heaves for a couple minutes.
