Have any of you heard of Sarcodosis. It is a respiratory illness that can cause coughing. It affects many people differently. It can affect different organs of your body. My mother has this and she coughs often to clear her throat. You may want to ask your doctor about Sarcodosis.
I've read through all these posts, and many other similar posts throughout the web, and I have yet to find any satisfactory solution for my problem.

It seems that the problem varies from person to person, but the common symptoms seem to be coughing after eating or drinking, and especially in the morning. At least, those are my symptoms.

Everyone seems to say it is acid reflux. I have taken so many drugs for acid reflux it isn't funny, and none seem to have any decent effect, other than Gaviscon (only the kind that contains a seaweed extract, and although it helped decrease acid reflux, it did nothing to relieve the exces mucus and subsequent coughing). I did discover that a pressure-point bracelet usually used for nausea has been proven to also be effective against acid reflux. I've been using one for a week now and the acid reflux problem seems to have been improving, however, no change in the mucus production and coughing.

However, even when there are no symptoms of acid reflux, the amount of mucous in the back of my throat and irritating my windpipe is brutal, particularly after eating. It makes me cough and hack, sometimes to the point of gagging and a few times to the point of vomiting. It seems worse in the first few hours of the morning.

I tried the humidifier while I was sleeping, didn't seem to help. Some foods seem to trigger an overproduction of mucuous and coughing, like McDonald's Big Macs and fountain soda. However, I just had a chicken sandwich and automatically i could feel an emormous amount of mucus being created and sitting at the back of my throat. I need to clear my throat for about an hour after eating or else I will choke and cough and gag on the phlegm.

If you've ever swallowed water down your windpipe, and spent half an hour coughing and hacking it back up, you'll know exactly what it feels like to suffer from this.

Why the heck do I, do WE, produce so much mucous and/or phlegm and how do we stop it? I have yet to see a decent answer, anywhere. That is insane!

Someone on here mentioned a need for a better diet, containing more fruits and vegetables. I admit, I do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. Maybe I need to add more to my diet, maybe that will help. Here is something I found:

Quote:

Results show fruits, such as apples and grapes, and other high-fiber foods were associated with a reduced risk of cough with phlegm. Researchers say nutrients known as flavonoids may be responsible for the reduced risk. The trend was observed in both smokers and nonsmokers. However, they say smoking is still the most important factor in determining whether patients will experience the respiratory condition.
From: http://www.bio-medicine.org/medicine-news/Foods-Rich-In-Flavonoids-Effective-In-Prevention-Of-Cough-2857-1/

However, I find that many fruits upset my stomach. I actually took some Vitamin C supplements containing flavonoids, and those upset my stomach.

*Sigh*... this is really annoying. I hate coughing everytime I eat, especially in public, and I hate people questioning me about it. I feel like I have a terminal illness, from the way people look at me. lol.
Just found this posting as I'm recovering from a bad bacterial bronchial infection and am living with constant post nasal drip, coughing stuff up, etc. I go to see a naturapathic doctor who has helped me greatly, after I had bad reactions to antibiotic (Levequin).

There are things we consume that increase production of mucus..like citrus (surprisingly, since mom always told us to drink our oj when we had a cold, but there are many other good vit c sources), tomatoes (avoid really acidic food in general when you have a cold), cheese (particularly aged, like cheddar), milk, most dairy with the possible exception of yogurt, sugar, chicken (but not chicken broth - ancient Chinese medicine suggests chicken broth with no chicken pieces left in it for this reason), and for many people, wheat, which is in so many things! (bread, pasta, cereal, as a filler in many prepared foods.) So what can you eat?!

What helps? Tea made from fresh ginger with a pinch of cayenne. I eat lots of rice and veggies, raw garlic, clear soups, rice noodles, green leafy veggies (also high in calcium), some fresh cheese like chevre (goat's milk cheese), herbal teas, quinoa (a high protein grain), coconut milk (for cooking), nuts, not a lot of fruit but some, no refined sugar or artificial sweeteners..I use agave syrup (from cactus plant..delicious and good for people with blood sugar probs), legumes like chick peas and black beans, sprouts, fresh ginger for teas and cooking, tempeh, a little fresh fish like salmon.

Herbs..I take osha as decongestant and others as needed.

It's a little work, but cheaper than doctors visits/prescription medications and it works better long term as it builds your health to help you not get sick in the future. As far as I'm concerned WORTH IT. Worth a try if you are switching from med to med and not changing your diet. Doctors often do not know a lot about nutrition and can have terrible eating habits themselves. I cooked for a prominent ears/nose/throat doctor who wouldn't take any of the meds he prescibed to patients and used only herbs for his problems.
Hello all, ive been suffering from the same problem as everyone else here, excessive mucus in the back of the throat. It gets worse after i eat, and especially at night when im trying to sleep, its darn near impossible to fall asleep when you clear your throat every 5-10 seconds. I used to take the over the counter version of Prilosec, not very helpful really, i hadnt seen any difference at all with it just by itself. However recently, after reading through this thread, i went out and got some Apple Cider Vinegar pills and have been taking 2 per meal along with prilosec.

And while they havent gotten rid of the problem completely, they have helped greatly in reducing the intensity or frequency of mucus build-up in my throat. So it has made it sooooo much easier to fall asleep at night, and i have very little throat clearing (though still some, but not to the point of annoying people around me) after meals.

For those of you who have sleeping troubles because of this throat problem, go out to a health food store and buy apple cider vinegar pills, they help greatly.

Just some warnings though, these vinegar pills DO reduce your appatite quite a lot. i used to eat 3 full meals + some snacks in between at random intervals, now its not uncommon for me to just have 1-2 small meals per day (more often 1 rather than 2) So it would probably be a good idea to take some vitamins with it.

Secondly, dont sniff the bottle ;p i made this mistake and ye gods... its like smelling salt but 100 times worse lol.

hope this helps some people :-)
I am in the same boat as you guys. It is so annoying I can't stand it. I have been told that I have LPR. Drink plenty of water follow the GERD diet, take prilosec in the morning and zantac at night before I go to bed. Also I have Multiple Sclerosis so of course they want to say everying that happens to me is because of that. I will try what they say for a couple of weeks then if that doesn't work I'll go back to the ENT. I had noticed a fluttering in my ear so I'm wondering if the previous poster could be right about the ear infection. I will be asking about that. I have what feels like a great big lump in my throat also. I've been scoped and they have found nothing. I'm sorry but there has to be something!!! It feels like a great big clump of snot is hanging on the backside of that little thing that hangs down the back of your throat. (Uvula) I do know that mine is very long and hangs down long enought to lay on the back of my tongue. Do you guys like do the snort thing and get mucus from your sinuses but then it hangs up in your throat?
I had same problem for about 8 months, treated for sinus infection, didnt work. I tried everything for GERD thinking that was the problem, didnt work either. Then I read about the cause being allergies and that zyrtec-d would help. Amazingly it seems to be working for me, thank god. The d is for the added decongestant, zyrtec d will slow the amount of mucus that is created, and stop the post nasal drip or at least slow it down. Make sure it has the D if you try it, worked for me. Good luck, hope it works for you all too!
this is EXACTLY what is happening to me.... i have a thick unmovable "glob" of mucus thats in the back of my throat. ITS DRIVING ME INSANE! i feel it effects my tone of voice, everytime i speak i have to clear my throat or else i cant even make out a word! its extremely embarrasing... i used to make people laugh but i cant anymore... i've had this glob in my throat since grade 9 and now im in grade 12 and its really depressing... i dont feel good about myself anymore. i've been to the doctors many times half the time they just shrug it off as its nothing, but ITS NOT! other times the give me sprays and sh*t like that and its doesnt work. not to mention my breath stinks even though i brush my teeth, floss, mouth wash. i've had a few incidents where i started choking and couldnt stop for 15 minutes it was a horrible feeling.

im not sure what the reason behind this is... i have smoked before, very little though, i smoked marijuana often before but i have stopped, not sure if thats the cause. i think it might have to do something with my ears because when i try and clear my nostils my ears "pop". a few weeks ago in the mornings i would cough out a alot of mucus that was clear with chunks or little pieces in the middle, and a few times it was bloody. it feels like the mucus is almost solid and no mater how much i try and hork it out it wont budge and when i eat it builds up. i need to fix this its driving me crazy!
This problem has become progressively worse for me over the past year. I went to the doctor when I knew I had a sinus infection. He put me on an antibiotic and Medrol Dose Pack. The methylprednisolone worked great - the excess mucus was gone. When I finished the pack, the problem resurfaced. After researching the long-term effects of steroids (in Medrol Dose pack), I decided against asking for a prolonged prescription for that. I called the doctor and asked him to call me in something similar. When I got to the pharmacy, the pharmacist told me that my doctor's office called me in Claritin-D, which you don't need a prescription for. Nice, huh? The Claritin helps with my chronic sinusitis but does not help with the excess mucus. I am going to try the Apple Cider Vinegar pills and the sinus irrigation as nothing else on this forum seems to be the "magic" cure. Thanks for all the great posts and info.
did it work? I too all of the sudden after having a respiratory flu have a lump in my throat now that I cant seem to cough up, it is driving me insane!!I almost had a panic attack about it last night, my husband did everything he could to calm me down. Please tell me if it worked, I am going to try everything I have read here.
I've read through all of these posts and I felt that different people had different probs & solutions that I don't think we're talking about the same problem anymore. The one post that came closest to what I'm experiencing was from username "frog".. so I'm just gonna write down my symptoms here. I have this chronic prob for as long as I could remember (i'm 26 now).. it's this constant thin mucus in the back of my throat and it GETS WORSE AFTER DRINKING MILK, and running/exercising. In addition, I have chronic allergies so I think it may be related. Sometimes I feel like I have to suck it out from the top/back of my nose real bad to spit out the mucus. I have to clear my throat a lot and it does get embarrassing and annoying. Sometimes i feel it gets really stuck that i can't breathe and i get really tired from not having enough oxygen and i could feel my heart racing.

I've found a couple of remedies that temporarily helped me. I found that drinking really concentrated, bitter green tea helped clear that mucus and allow me to swallow it down. The more bitter and concentrated green tea, the better it worked for me. I'm talking about the strong dark tea leaves taht come in a can that u can get at an asian supermarket, not the weak ones that come in little tea bags all ground up. I've never tried it with sugar because i actually like bitter tea.. so i don't know if it will work. I also find that using Saline nasal spray to be helpful. I hope this will help out some of you. But these are only temporary solutions, if any one else has any other remedies, please share.
You need to see a gastroenterologist. I have the same problem. I have GERD and reflux. I also have a cough, asthma, sinus problems, hiatal hernia . I never have heartburn.

But if your symptoms are severe, occur often, or are accompanied by coughing, wheezing, asthma, a sore throat, difficulty swallowing or chest pain, talk to your doctor.
Other nerves that are stimulated do not produce pain. Instead, they stimulate yet other nerves that provoke coughing. In this way, refluxed liquid can cause coughing without ever reaching the throat! In a similar manner, reflux into the lower esophagus can stimulate esophageal nerves that connect to and can stimulate nerves going to the lungs.
GERD is a common cause of unexplained coughing. Although GERD also may be a cause of asthma, it is more likely that it precipitates asthmatic attacks in patients who already have asthma. GERD is a chronic condition. Once it begins, it usually is life-long. If there is injury to the lining of the esophagus (esophagitis), this also is a chronic condition. Moreover, after the esophagus has healed with treatment and treatment is stopped, the injury will return in most patients within a few months. Once treatment for GERD is begun, therefore, it usually will need to be continued indefinitely although it is argued that in some patients with intermittent symptoms and no esophagitis, treatment can be intermittent and done only during symptomatic periods.
As is often the case, the body has ways (mechanisms) to protect itself from the harmful effects of reflux and acid. For example, most reflux occurs during the day when individuals are upright. In the upright position, the refluxed liquid is more likely to flow back down into the stomach due to the effect of gravity. In addition, while individuals are awake, they repeatedly swallow, whether or not there is reflux. Each swallow carries any refluxed liquid back into the stomach. Finally, the salivary glands in the mouth produce saliva, which contains bicarbonate. With each swallow, bicarbonate-containing saliva travels down the esophagus. The bicarbonate neutralizes the small amount of acid that remains in the esophagus after gravity and swallowing have removed most of the liquid.

Gravity, swallowing, and saliva are important protective mechanisms for the esophagus, but they are effective only when individuals are in the upright position. At night during sleep, gravity is not in effect, swallowing stops, and the secretion of saliva is reduced. Certain conditions make a person susceptible to GERD. For example, GERD can be a serious problem during pregnancy.
I too am having this mucous stuck in the throat for quite some time, quite irriating.. i saw some posts indicatin that they had Otitis Externa in the end, can i check do you suffer from ear pain when you the mucous stuck there feeling?

My job require me to listen to headphone for 12 hours throughout, there's a high chance for me to have ear infection but i do not have any ear pain.. Able to advise?? Thanks
I too have been suffering from this for a year now. I recently went to an allergist, and I am taking asthma medicine along with medication for GERD. It seems to be helping. Gerd can trigger asthma or visa versa, but either way it has taken a long time to get any relief. I have had a thick mucus in my throat and always having to spit. It's been hell. Nobody could figure it out, and most doctors have acted like I was making it all up. Anyway, you might want to try an allergist. Believe me I went to the allergist last, thinking there was noway I had an allergy, but ends up I have an allergy to my dogs, and it's bringing all of this on. I'm keeping the dogs, as they are my babies, but have started the medicines for both issues, and it is working a little bit, anything is better than what I've had for the past year. I'll keep trying it and pray it keeps helping me. It's not perfect, but it's better. Try an allergist even if you don't believe you have an allergy, I didn't try it because i didn't think I had one, but this has helped me the most in the past year. Good luck.
I have the same problem all the time, It's GERD. I don't ever have heartburn but have discovered that GERD can happen at night when you are asleep and you don't even know. You wake up with a sore throat and sometimes just a lot of mucous in your throat as well. I hate having this because I have found very little relief with everything I have tried. I don't take the PPIs anymore as I cannot afford them. I also just think it is stupid to take them for the rest of my life. You might just try and figure out what is causing this for you. Unfortunately, for some of us (like me) I don't think there is a specific cause. I have gotten a little better over time but I don't think I will ever kick this for good. Good luck to you.
Ive read this whole thread, and so far, nobody has really posted about what i am most concerned about: the nasty dark brown globs of hardened mucus that accumulates in the folds of the back of my mouth/throat. I have to clear them out periodically by shoving my finger in the back of my mouth and mine them out.

it is so disturbing. they stink and its scary.

where do they come from and why are they accumulating there?

its only started in the last 6 months. the intervals of clearing the chunks are about a month at a time now. they seem to only be occurring on my left side, none so far on my right. i have always had allergies and i use an inhaler from time to time, but why now?

Does anybody else have these symptoms? What to do about it?
