I went to the doctor in August for sinus pressure and pressure in ears with some acid reflux and a bit of unsteadiness at times. I was sure it was an ear problem but he said he didn't see anything. He gave me allegra d and protonix samples along with a prescription for nasal steriod, which I didn't fill for three days. Well I started the samples the same day and felt great for the next couple of days. By the fourth day I started getting extreme neck spasms and pressure in throat, especially while in the car. My doctor suggested I go to see an ENT because my sinus ct scan and endoscopy egd came back reasonable clear and he thought it was my eustachian tubes blocked. Well the ENT saw nothing and just gave me additional nasal spray (antihistimine) and an additional decongestant. and upped acid meds. I just kept thinking I didn't feel like this when I originally went and have only gotten worse symptoms and sinus pressure was gone. I started eliminating the three originl prescriptions one by one and figured out that the nasal steriod spray had to be causing some of the neck constriction because it significantly decreased after I didn't use it, and began again after I tried it again in 2 weeks. I still have ear fullness at times and a lump in throat sometimes, and will go back to ENT this week. I hope my problems don't last as long as some of you have had it, I don't think I could take that.
It's very sad that here we are, many of us with mucous problems, posting our problems, and still no posts from anyone with successful medications. Can't believe how rediculous that is. Goes to show just how "great" modern medicine is when they can't make a product that controls your mucous levels in your nose and/or chest. Again, Dr.'s are highly OVERPAID for not being able to recognize a very common condition and come to a consensus that something needs to be done to help people like us. Sure mucinex works, but good luck doing any physical activity without feeling like you'll die from coughing. All I can say is shame on the medical industry altogether. What a joke those overpaid buffoons are. After seeing Dr. after Dr., i've lost all respect i've had for them completely

I am just like the rest of you. But I was wondering does anyone wake up in the morning and sneeze three or four times and then in the shower cough up some mucus and then go through out the day clearing your throat? This is why I was thinking it was alergies. But this is now going on 5 months and it started after I got bronchitis. Sorry about spell check. But I too and annoyed with the constant clearing of the throat and the meds that you take in hopes of getting better. Drugs that I have used are claritin, mucinex and sinus meds to many to name all as well as mis-spell. I will in the middle of the day sneeze about 20+ times. Clearing my throat makes it really dry and sometimes painful. I wish someone can help us all.
I have the same problem with mucus in my throat. I have likewise tried Clariton, zyrtec, Sudafed, nasal sprays to no avail. Within the past month my doctor prescribed a new drug for allergies....."Xyzal" (prescription only) I took it for a couple of weeks with no relief but then my throat started getting better. Now I do not suffer with mucus in my throat. I take a tablet daily along with a Mucinex. I hope this helps someone! I had this problem so severe that I was nauseous most of the time. This is a terrible problem to live with. Xyzal might work.....
I'm 45 yr old white male living in metro Atlanta. I'm 5-9, 175 lbs, I am presently taking Levoxyl 0.112 daily for low thyroid for past 3 years. I also take Cymbalta for past 2 years for mild depression along with Androgel for low testosterone (been taking for past 5 years) and Adderall XR for Adult ADD (also taking for past 5 years). I have also been treating asthma symptoms for past 10 years. I had sinus surgery in '98 to correct a deviated septum, Nissen Fundoplication in 2001, Tongue reduction in '07, UPPP together with Septoplasty in '08 unsuccessfully to treat obstructive sleep apnea.

Also, in early 2004 I had a cosmetic chin implant added to augment my naturally recessed chin. ( I do not recall exactly when these swallowing symptoms started as they came on gradually but they did start not long before, or not long after the chin implant was done.)

My primary complaint surrounding my swallow is that I have residual material remaining in my lower throat after I swallow. I estimate 95 to 98% of whatever I am trying to swallow goes down fine with 2 to 5% remaining somewhere in my lower throat. This residual material can be either solid food particles, incompletely swallowed saliva, or incompletely swallowed liquids. The presence of this residual material makes me short of breath and difficult for me to breathe. I sometimes inhale the residual food particles or residual pooled liquids and cough and choke but more often or not, I sense the residual material and automatically go into a careful shallow breathing mode, during this shallow breathing mode, any physical activity makes me short on breath. Whether this residual material is scattered small solids (like ground beef or chewed nuts), single solid piece (like a pill or small piece of steak) or is simply pooled frothy liquid or saliva/phlegm, repeated dry swallows will not get it down. Similarly, drinking liquids will not wash down the residual material either.

The above described swallowing problem has existing for past 4 to 5 years and has become progressively worse in spite of Radio Frequency Tongue Reduction surgery in January of '07, Lower Esophageal dilation in 07, upper Esophageal dilation in 08 (it's possible my ENT Dr didn't actually stretch my UES as he's absent minded and may have forgot to do the stretch during the mid '08 Esophagoscopy w/biopsy after he saw the "burned tissue" in my lower throat and esophagus.) The "burned tissue" biopsy turned out fine. I suspect this burned tissue was caused by me habitually drinking large quantities of extra hot liquids which I find works better than anything to wash down the trapped residual material. After being advised on the "burned tissue" I have backed off on the extra hot liquids both in regards to temperature and quantity.

I have had three Modified Barium Swallow studies. The first one (November of '06) revealed extraneous tissue attached to my epiglottis that was further spotted on a subsequent CT scan. However, my ENT could not find any extraneous tissue during a fiber-optic examination of my throat so he dismissed the MBS study and CT scan as being a "fluke."

At this point I went to another practice (Emory Voice at Crawford Long Hospital) who, based on their fiber optic examination of my throat, said it was my lingual tonsil on my tongue base that was the extra material appearing on the first MBS and recommended a Radio Frequency Tongue Reduction along with a trimming of my epiglottis. On the morning of the Jan '07 tongue reduction/epiglottis trim surgery, the Doctor told me decided he didn't want to trim the epiglottis at the same time so only the Tongue reduction was performed. Several months later, I still had residual material in my lower throat so a second MBS was ordered which did reveal some residual liquids or fluids pooling in the vallecular space and pyriform sinus cavities. Based on this the Epiglottis trim was re-recommended but with a warning that it could make things worse and couldn't be reversed if that turned out to be the case. Before agreeing with the epiglottis trim, I asked for a second opinion from the senior Doctor at Emory Voice who after careful review indicated that he believed I was suffering from sensory neuropathy and the epiglottis trim was bad idea and that the previous tongue reduction probably was not of any use. Based on the sensory neuropathy diagnosed, I was prescribed Lyrica for several months which brought no improvement in systems.

After several months of unsuccessful Lyrica pills in conjunction with the fact that no matter ho hard I tried to swallow or wash down the residual material and I was now having to do a nightly 3 to 5 hours session (up from 1 to 2 hours) in a chair facing the tub forcing belches to force up the trapped residual material in my throat that refused to be swallowed so that my airway would be clear enough to allow me to sleep, I decided to give my original ENT another shot. I explained to him I was spending several hours a day burping in order to clear my airway and explained that I was often having to sleep in an upside position so that the residual material wouldn't drip into my airway during sleep. I pleaded for some sort of surgery on my lower throat but the ENT thought with all my belching and upside down sleeping I was half crazy and he refused to proceed with any treatment until I was on anti anxiety medication for at least 3 months. I asked him to write me a prescription and he indicated that treating anxiety is not part of his specialty and he referred me back to my primary care Doctor. Because I am on Adderall XR for adult ADD, I have to see my primary doctor monthly and on my next visit I asked him to put me on anxiety treatment in which he then explained that my antidepressant Cybalta is actually a antidepressant and anti-anxiety combo which I had already been taking for a couple of years.

I then returned to my ENT and explained I have already been doing anti-anxiety meds for 2 years so could we please proceed with the next step to fixing this swallow problem. He then disclosed that he see's nothing wrong with my throat and doesn't know what to else to do. I then told him that I've been told I snore and asked if it is possible I have obstructive sleep apnea of my lower throat which could also be causing these swallowing symptoms. He replied that I should have a sleep study. A sleep study was performed within a week and it revealed I was having between 65 to 200 AHI events per hour with oxygen saturation decreasing down to 83% and overall sleep efficiency of 79%. A couple months later MY ENT ordered a CPAP trial which later lead to me going on BiPAP treatment during sleep. I tried the BiPAP mask for 3 nights but it gave me major chest pains and seemed to want to blow the residual material in my throat down into my airway. I suspect that my shallow breathing brought on by the presence of pooled secretions at the top of my airway was triggering the BiPAP machine's "smart switch" to falsely assume I wasn't wearing the mask and would automatically shut down the machine causing me to re-breathe expelled air lingering in the 6' tube.

In between the two sleep studies,on one afternoon, earlier in the day than usual, I sensed a large accumulation of residual material in my throat and was able to get in to see my ENT within a couple of hours who looked down my throat with the fiber-optic scope and found "lots of crud" in each of my pyriform sinuses. I explained to him that "crud" was residual material left over from breakfast that I had eaten several hours before. I was so glad I was able to get my ENT to finally see for himself this residual material as he was under the assumption it was either reflux or was imagined.

Regardless of why the BiPAP wasn't working in conjunction with the confirmation of pooled secretions in my pyriforms, my ENT recommended UPPP and septoplasty to eliminate the obstruction causing the sleep apnea. I am now recovering from this combo surgery that was performed two weeks ago. The residual matter in my throat has become worse since the surgery and like I said before, the presence of this residual matter makes it hard for me to breathe which is a frustrating way to live, in that I'm always having to carefully inhale without sucking in the residual material into my windpipe.

I am desperate to resolve this matter. I have hit my maximum annual out of pocket limit on my BCBS insurance and I basically now have 100% insurance with no deductible.

Some additional general bullet point information is also provided below:

1) I have NOT had a Fiber-optic pharyngoscopy done while using continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to find the areas in my airway that collapse during sleep.

2) I have had a CT scan of my neck but not one of my sinuses done.

3) A cephalometric X-ray has not been performed.

4) After swallowing I am more likely to aspirate viscous liquids like water or soup broth than I am to aspirate thicker liquids.

5) I often cough up from my throat items that I have eaten several hours or even the day before.

6) If I eat a colored popcicle, I will for several hours (or even the next morning) be able to spit up or cough up from my throat saliva matching the bright color of the popcicle (even after drinking plenty of liquids and broushing my teeth and garling with mouth wash).

7) My ENT has indicated I do not have a Zincker's pouch.

8) I awake often during the night having to clear un-swallowable saliva and phlegm and spit it out on to the hand towel I sleep with.

9) I often have to burp after drinking or eating in order to "re-set" the top of my esophagus and bottom of my throat in order to be able to receive more liquids or solid foods.

10) After I have already sipped liquid or chewed food and worked the bolus to the back of my tongue, I suddenly realize my esophagus is not going to accept the bolus and I have to spit out whatever is in my mouth, do a "re-set" burp and then re-attempt the swallow.

11) I used to be able to close my mouth and do a downward suction snort to gather the residual material gathered in my throat which I could then spit out or swallow. This maneuver is no longer effective.

12) Chin tuck swallows do not help.

13) Head turned swallows will keep additional food particles from going into one pyriform sinus but does not prevent the other pyriform from retaining the newly swallowed material.

14) I purchased a suction machine off ebay in 2004 in hopes it would suction out the un-swallowable residual material in my lower throat. At first, this machine was useless as I could not get the suction tube low enough in my throat to be of any use. However, in the past year, the machine has become more useful to remove large quantities of frothy liquids in my lower throat but I am not able to get it to "get it all out" with the suction device.

15) I often have trouble swallowing my normal saliva so I have to spit often which is made worse when I experience excessive drooling which occurs when something is "stuck" in my throat.

16 I often feel the need to swallow, I want to swallow whatever's in but regardless of my inability to dislodge and swallow the retained material, I sometimes tongue pump and repeatedly swallow involuntarily.

17) I have not had a FEESST test done.

I am wondering if I might have a cricopharyngeal disorder and wondered if I might benefit from a cricopharyngeal myotomy. I would be coming from Atlanta and due to this disorder, I haven't been able to work for the past 2 years so I have to make the most of the dollars I spend on travel. Any legitimate suggestions can be posted here or emailed to _[removed]_
They are called tonsillar stones and are caused by pieces of food getting stuck in pits/craters in the tonsils. They are usually white but maybe you smoke which is why they would be brown, I think. It's like the plaque that collects around teeth. It can be a sign of dehydration so make sure you drink plenty of water.
Newbie,

I think that you should see a speech therapist for swallowing exercises. It sounds like you have a weak base of tongue, which you need to make pressure during the swallowing process. I'm surprised a chin down position did not help to reduce the residue in the valleculae and pyriforms.

Aspiration is very dangerous. If you are aspirating thin liquids and none of the compensatory strategies are working then you should thicken up your liquids. Aspiration can cause aspiration pneumonia.

Hope this helps,
Nikki
I had mucus problem for many years at leat 10 years. It all begin with my gum bleeding , my mouth smell terrible and at that time I also start to grow my wisdum teeth. I went to the dentist to check out why I have gum problem, my mouth smell bad and my gum bleed all the time even just smilling or talk. He exam my teeth he say that I do not flose my teeth well enough my gum start to get bacteria infection. He say that I must get my wisdum teeth poll also. If not it can't be flose enough to get clean. And get teeth clean once a year with the dentist. So I did exactly what he recommand. I did a deep clean and pull my teeth from then on my month had no more strong smell. But if I dont get my teeth deep clean ever six months then my month start to smell again.

After this stage, I start to have hard mucus like cook grain of rice except its kinda round lumpy and yellowes. I was yarning one day and suddenly I get chook and hack out many balls of that mucus like rice its smell badly on my hands as I catch it. Then from then on I keep have it here and there like in the morning when I brush my tongue its come out and or when I eatting. Usually its uncomefortable like chooking feeling then its role out its self with no force. I went to my family practice doctor and describ it one day I even keep some of it for them to see. But by the day of the appointment its dry up had no more smell and that piece of rice mucus had harding up like sand or candy. They I no clue of what the simptom is and don't even care or know who to referr. Its was like if there no one in the world had this problem and had come to them. I'm very dissapointing, not able to get it treat. now 10yrs later still no one can help. But the mucus that come out like rice had slow down, doest come out as often anymore.

I have a different problem, I had a wet mucus out of my throut in the morning when I brush my teeth and its come with a dark red and bright red mix in color its blood. I don' t know what to do at this time. I lost hope of all the doctor around here. I don't knnow if anyone else out there had some problem and able to find help. So over the year one things after another develop in my throught.

People said once the mouth had bacteria make your mouth smell then its will lead to lungs and stomach ulcer, must get treat soon.
I am going to a gastroenterologist next week to see if balloon dilation of my esophagus might help... I've always felt like things aren't draining efficiently, the mucus clogs me up, and there's always been a bit of a tight feeling in my throat. I can totally relate to all these posts! To top it off, I sing, and this mucus, which leads to chronic throat infections/sore throats, has been frustrating and disheartening. I often get hoarse after singing a short while, and my voice ends up with a "tinny" sound. Have been to MANY ENTs... apparently I have NO allergies... Anyway, does this gastro path make sense??
hi goldie locks- I have read about 2 types of acid reflux- GERD and LPR. GERD is usually associated with heartburn and mainly after you eat. LPR sufferers don't necessarily have heartburn, and unfortunately, the acid is also 24-7. I have acid reflux, LPR- although doctors just write GERD on my chart. Medicine does not help- I have thick mucus and have to clear my throat all the time- it's especially horrible because I sing and I always "trip" on my mucus in the middle of a phrase. It doesn't matter what I eat- everything creates mucus. It also doesn't matter if I don't eat at all either- my body will just decide it's time for more mucus out of nowhere for no apparent reason. It's especially bad in the first few hours in the am and for some reason, also after the sun goes down- it seems to act up again. High fiber and avoiding dairy is supposed to help- tried that but probably not long enough bc it didn't help much at all. Something I have come across in reading about this issue is the possibility of having a parasite - yes, OK- it sounds sort of far fetched or hokey (also...gross!) , but everyone has them in some amount, like it or not. You can have an "overgrowth" of them though. Because nothing else has helped, I am trying a parasite cleanse (Paragone, abount $30 or so at a healthfood store) to see if that does anything.) I think I notice a little difference, but I have had acid reflux for a few years- maybe I need to keep on with avoiding dairy and processed foods. It's really challenging, but I want to be cured so badly too- I am on this program now since Nov 13th- no dairy, also no pork. I am eating lots of fresh raw fruits and veggies everyday too. I actually read on www.voiceteacher.com an article about alternative medicine which addressed parasites and throat issues- maybe that's something to research. I have read somewhere that people who have mucus that is brought up from their stomach also generally have mucus issues in the nose too....hmmm. Although my symptoms really indicate acid reflux, I am thinking now that parasites may also have a role. Something to check out I guess. Good luck- hope you find an answer. If you do, I am dying to know too. Please do share.
I read from someone on this site named sally 74-newbie, that she had Otis Externa which caused her mucus build up.

Was Otis Externa painful? Did you ever realise you had an ear infection whatsoever.

I have had mucous in my throat for 18 months and like everyone else, have tried everything including a very painful nose operation, which scraped all the lining out of my nose. This did not work either.

If ears do not hurt, is it worth having a second opinion with another ENT specialist?

Please answer.
After reading that you managed to get rid of your excess mucous, you said that it was your ears after all.

Did you have any pain with Otitus Externa or did you not realise at all that you had an ear infection.

i'm a Doctor of Osteopathic medicine (D.O.), and have had all my life mucus problems. But 2 years ago, I HAVE FINALLY FOUND THE SOLLUTION!!! (sorry for mistakes in english, i'm french educated, so my english is not so perfect...)

After many years, and after having tried everything that could possibly exist to cure this annoying condition, I can say that i finally found a cure that worked, and completely reversed my condition. I was sooooo frustrated that conventionnal medicine couldn't help me...that's why i searched a natural solution.

If you do exactly what i say you WILL gave amazing results!!
First, the cause of the excess mucus is 100% diet and hygiene related (unless you have a severe allergy to a specific material...)
the mucus protects tissues from external aggression (irritant), they get trapped in the mucus so they dont affect the tissue...
Unless you work in a mine or exposed to extreme pollution, you have little chance to be chronically exposed to external irritant (although such condition exists...)

What if the irritation comes from within?
our diet creates more toxins than can be eliminated (especially by kidneys). the blood and all extra-cellular fluid becomes loaded with toxic chemicals. These chemical irritates our tissues (in this case its the upper respiratory tissues) from within, the body creates mucus to get rid of the irritation (by dissoliving it in the mucus).
But because we are in the same time extremely dehydrated, the mucus formed is very dried (the body prefers this option to acute dehydration which is fatal).

OK now enough theory... There a 2 rules to follow to get cured. It takes between 2-4 weeks to be completely cured, but improvements shows quickly within the first week :

1) Yes you know this, and you have already heard this 1000 of times, but chances are that you aren't following this advice : YOU MUST DRINK 3-4 Litters of water (nothing else) a day!! YOU MUST DO IT. PERIOD.
just by doing this, the kiddney will beginn to eliminate excess toxins, so overall irritation off the tissues diminishes => less mucus production, and and only after 3-4 days you'll notice that mucus in throat and in sinus is less dry, and more liquid, and much more easier to caugh.

2) you must eat a Low fat vegan diet (whole foods, no white flour/rice). That means : fruits/veggies/whole grains and legumes. little oils/nuts.
If you cannot stick 100% with this diet, it's ok to eat once or maximum twice a week animal products in moderation.
it's better not to eat solid food at the breakfast (tea, orange juice, juicy fruits, a lot of water). Do NOT eat more than twice a days : that is lunch and dinner.

I know for most people, i can be hard to follow because they're addicted to junk and proccessed food. But finally....we harvest what we sow...So if you're not able to follow a strict and healthy lifestyle, don't blame anyone but yourself.

After following this lifestyle, my sinus completly cleared after 3 weeks, my voice is at its best (i'm a singer...and lost my voice because of mucus), no more caughin, no more sinusitis headache, need 6-7 hours maximum of sleep instead of 9-10 and tired..... better mood...etc....

despite my heavy schedule during the week at the clinic, i like to help people free of charge by giving advice on the internet, when i have free time left.

if you have any question, don't hesitate to write on : _[removed]_

you'll have an answer within maximum a week.
peace be with you
Elie
What you have is tonsil stones... not serious just annoying. Try taking Chuan Xin Lian (Chinese Herb). Take as directed and also drink lots of fluids to thin mucus in your throat.
