Hi, although this post is old now, I have experienced this from about the age of 37 until now at age 44, and it happens just before ovulation and then again before my period. My left eye gets red, and a quite droopy and lasts about a day and a half. I have always assumed it was hormonal and possibly due to oestrogen dominance. With that thought in mind, I started researching that oestrogen stimulates the production of histamine, and histamine intolerance includes sinus pain, watery eyes, etc. It is worth reading about the connection. I have found taking an antihistamine very useful when the funny eye thing happens and I need to have my public face on. It really helps for me, finally!

Hi ladies, it's really nice to know that I'm not an abnormality. I have also been suffering a while now with red eye syndrome associated with my period. No swelling or and itching, however, the left eye just turns red. Absolutely frustrating & redness disappears in about a week's time. Please Help

I'm so relieved to see I'm not the only one!! I've been suffering from this for about 8 years now, but wasn't until just recently realized it happened right before my cycle!! I've read, with one good eye, every post! And I'm going to try estrogen and see if that helps!! Everyone has asked my haven't I gone to a doctor.. well.. because my eye barely lets my own hand get near it! Couldn't imagine a doctor poking and prodding at it!! Lasts about two days and feels like someone dumped sand in it! Hurts worse at night! Extremely light sensitive! I'm going to try estrogen and I'll check back and let y'all know if it works!

I too started getting this in my mid forties, I am almost 51. I am a total health nut and very fit but this drives me crazy. Right eye everytime. I have noticed a pattern that if I don't guzzle water and avoid salt (esp. restaurant food) before my period, I get this. I have had it a couple of times in the way past during stress (wedding day, lovely and a day of interviews that was intense). I do think waning estrogen may play a role as this started regularly during PMS when other telltale perimenopausal issues started. But hydration and limited salt, lots of veggies works wonders. So glad I'm not alone!!

I've been suffering from this in times of stress or hormone changes for nearly 6 years. I found a great opthamologist who is also an uveitis specialist and diagnosed it as episcleritis/scleritis. I recommend finding an uveitis specialist for info and guidance. Episcleritis/scleritis sometimes occurs because of underlying auto immune diseases. But it can occur without an underlying illness. The tobradex/predforte eye drops seemed to work initially but more recently for me requires prescribed NSAIDs to resolve completely. I have tried turmeric (natural anti inflammatory) and cold compresses which can help with pain but not resolve it completely. Feel better.

I am 33 and going through the same thing. 3 eye Dr's and no answers! I finally saw a specialist andnd he diagnosed me with episclirits. I take aleve constantly and use pain relieving drops daily. Why is this so unknown. I wake up crying in the morning and my husband has to get me ice to put on my lids so I can start my day. Not to mention crushing headaches. Wish I could get some other relief.

Hello all! Very happy to have found this forum. I am 38 years old and have been experiencing this same eye phenomenon since April. I have been tracking it and it seems to show up about 2 weeks before my period. Has anyone made any new discoveries on how to treat it? I was prescribed steroid drops to get me over the hump each month but of course I am cautious of using them too frequently since there are long term effects. Thanks in advance!

Hello. Can you please send me your doctors information. I was diagnosed with hsv1 from a sexual assault case and have recurrent eye redness and eye pain during my menstration. None of my doctors know what to make of it and I have spent so much money going to infectious disease, ophthalmologist, and gynos at BJC it's cost me thousands of dollars with no reassurance of any answers. It would be so appreciated just to get at least some answer. Thanks. And I am sorry you seem to have the same symptoms ❤️ Hope you are well and that you doctor prescribed a good way to manage the pain.

Hi all. Well here's my follow up. I FINALLY was able to go to the eye doctor the DAY I experienced the pain. And when I say the day, I mean, I woke up and could barely open my right eye, drove to the doc, walked in and said, check this right now. I'm so glad I did because they were finally able to diagnose me with a recurrent erosion. Somehow, some way, I had scratched my eye. The pain would only occur during my ovulation time or while I was on my period due to my eyes drying out during that time. They said that my eye would start to heal and then during my cycles, it would dry out so bad that opening my eye after sleeping was like ripping off a scab. The erosion could never heal properly. They couldn't see the erosion during several visits at the doc prior to this because it would heal just enough that the dye wouldn't pick it up and nothing was noticeable when they examined my eye. Flash forward...I had PTK laser surgery performed on my affected eye and it is doing SOOOO much better. I would urge each of you to explore this diagnosis as well. Hope this info helps someone!
