Strange that Blistex works for some and not others. I guess there are other factors that are blocking Blistex from working in some people.. maybe it's dry, cold weather.. or a mineral deficiency like zinc.. the stress and anxiety caused by the condition probably doesn't help either..

with that said, unrefined shea butter is so far the treatment I've had the best results with.. shea butter is loaded in Vitamin A, E, and K which are all essential for healthy skin, so it makes sense that it would be helpful.. I noticed that it works best during summer, probably due to the heat and humidity.

there are some new lip products out there with potential.. nivea hydrocare (it has jojoba oil, shea butter, and vitamin E; all great for the skin) is one, and there's also Sally Hansen Gentle Peel which apparently takes layers off of your lips, so that would be maybe a good way to get the trapped oil to escape.. i'm going to try these all out in due time.
Jojoba oil is one thing that is gaining prominence these days.. it's an amazing treatment for acne, and it's very likely that it will be an effective treatment for fordyce spots as well.. and here's why:

Your skin is composed of three layers which are the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous tissue. Beneath the epidermis is the dermis, and it is here where you find hair follicles. Surrounding these follicles are sebaceous glands, which secrete sebum, which is responsible for the oily skin that can cause acne and fordyce spots. Sebum is a natural skin lubricant but the most common problem with sebum is overproduction. Overproduction leads to acne and fordyce spots.

So the trick in getting rid of fordyce spots is simple: halt the overproduction of sebum. Now what can do this, safely and effectively? Yes, the answer is jojoba oil.. Jojoba oil suppresses the overproduction of sebum and takes control of the sebaceous glands. It essentially tricks your skin into thinking that you have enough sebum, so your skin won't try to overcompensate by producing excess sebum.

So jojoba oil works from the inside out, rather than the reverse. Most lip balms work from the outside in, which will not tackle these spots. Blistex could help, but it's nowhere near as powerful as jojoba oil. Now you could always do both at the same time, but they may get in the way with one another. Best thing would be to just try using jojoba oil as a lip balm, without anything else, to see how it goes. Not only does it control sebaceous glands, it also has antifungal and antibacterial properties, and is loaded with Vitamin E. You can purchase this in health food stores, or if you're in North America, online at well.ca/products/desert-essence-100-pure-certified_10034.html?cat=549

We have a very powerful weapon here, people. Now let's see if it works.
Please be aware of Blistex!

I was using Blistex Med for 10 days and it made Fordyce spots on my lips WORSE! After using it for 2 days I noticed more spots were appearing on my lower lip. I stopped using it week ago and the new spots remained! But they are less visible now.

And every time I put Blistex on my lips, after few minutes spots started to look worse and more visible. I don't know why?!!!

Maybe these bloody glands absorbed some Blistex stuff and became more visible / bigger.

I went to a doc - he said I have fordyce spots because my lips are bloody dry - no coffee and planty of water, and after 1 month he'll see if there's some improvement or not.
oh, I forgot - doc said to avoid hot drinks - they irritate your lips.
Hello I was trying Blistex and it made them more noticable but then i was just about fed up with it all when i had a awsome idea.. Fordyce is just oil glands or something in your lip . acne is just oil on your face so i thought mabye rubbing acne cream on my lips. and after about 4 or five times doing this every half an hour i accually noticed the difference i am not joking. i was so happy when i did this. i am still only 1 day into this and honestly you can barley see my fordyce anymore. i dont know how long it will last but at least it provides me with short term releif. i think it might work with lots of acne cream but i think you should try a deep clean acne cream. i will tell you the one i am using (no this is not an advertisement i am just telling you this). St. Ives swiss formula Apricot scrub gentle (i dont know if it is an exfoliating cream or a acne cream but i am soo happy. im just putin that out there for all of you.
P.s i rubed the cream on my affected lip area with a little bit of force for about 3 minutes and rinsed it and then put a little tiny coat of it on my lips and left it on.
it's no coincidence that treatment for acne can help with fordyce spots, they're caused by the same mechanism only the location is different.. accutane and tretinoin cream have been proven to be effective, BUT there is a natural treatment that is safe and even more effective.. and it's called Jojoba Oil.. apply it to your lips 3 times a day and it's virtually impossible to get fordyce spots, so it's a brilliant preventive treatment.. it also blocks sebum production and restores your skin so it can get rid of your spots as well.. it's brilliant
Ok now before anyone jumps the gun and says something stupid or ridicules me for this, The treatment my DOC told me works.. I have Been Using Lotramin Antifungal and other Lotramin aTHLETES FOOT STUFF.. i HAVE ONLY USED lOTRAMIN bRAND AND BEEN DOING SO FOR 6 YEARS. i put it on my lip or anywhere Fordyce is, just before bed and once or twice that day and POOF the next day gone and no signs for months.. I know its not for that but The stuff works very well.. told my buddy about it, he uses Lotramin AF now too and it clears his up in a day and a half so results may vary by person.. just dont lick your lips after putting it on after all this will just agitate your lips anyways. Well good luck to all and please try this for it does work.. Email me and let me know.. i am going to do a survey on this treatment..

Omqq..
I have da exact same thing.
I wanna get it out!
Didn't know what this was until today. Went to the dermatologist, she used some hot needles to burn the suckers off. I don't know if it will work, but I think that it's the same thing as permanent hair removal, I will post in a couple of days with the result. For the most part they weren't very noticeable except for small part on upper lip, so as long as that one goes away I am happy.
There are a lot of things that need to be done to get these suckers off. First you need to get your skin to stop producing too much sebum (which is what causes fordyce spots in the first place), then you need to bring the fordyce spots closer to the surface, and then you need to exfoliate or peel your lips.

Jojoba oil will halt the overproduction of sebum AND push your spots closer to the surface. I've been using it for almost a week now and the spots are closer to the surface than they've ever been, looks like they're just waiting to come out. So then I exfoliated with St. Ives Gentle Apricob Scrub and a few spots have come out. You need to take the cream and rub your lips with a bit of force to open the skin up, brushing with a toothbrush is an effective way of doing that just don't brush too hard or you'll be bleeding all over the place. And obviously don't try to bite your lips or cut them to open the skin up, gently rubbing or brushing with an exfoliant should do the trick. This takes time, keep in mind.. it should get rid of a few spots a day, so if you have a ton it'll take a couple of weeks.. If the exfoliant doesn't work, you can apply toothpaste to dry up your lips and peeling should occur, and since Jojoba oil will push them to the surface, not much peeling would be needed. Give it a shot! Jojoba Oil's extremely easy to find, as is St. Ives Gentle Apricot Scrub.
thanks for the suggestions ted! i will give that a try. i jus ordered some jojoba oil and its on its way. luckily i already own the st ives. i also found this company that claims that their product gets rid of fordyce spots . Has anyone ever tried them? p.s. i am not promoting them. just throwing this out for people who want to try

tedmosby's suggestions are absolutely brilliant!!!!

I've tried Blistex Lip Medex for MONTHS and other lip products as well with ZERO success! They may work for some people, perhaps for those who no longer are producing too much sebum or who have dry peeling lips. But not for everybody. Jojoba oil on the other hand WILL work for everybody because it attacks the very cause of the fordyce spots and then pushes them to the surface allowing them to be exfoliated off!! It kills two birds with one stone, taking care of the first 2 of the 3 steps that need to be taken to get rid of the spots.

Day three now and about 15-20 spots are gone already! I apply the oil several times a day, and towards the end of the day when the spots are closest to the surface, I exfoliate with a gentle exfoliant cream. A few spots have come off everytime I've done that!!

Thanks Ted!
is it called CuSkin? if so, it has Regu-Seb as the main ingredient, which claims to stop the overproduction of sebum.. but it's very expensive, and hasn't been proven to be effective.. and one thing that product does is it TIGHTENS pores in order to reduce the SIZE of your spots, whereas jojoba oil and exfoliant cream OPEN the pores in order to allow your spots to ESCAPE.. which sounds better? :)

Good luck with the Jojoba oil, remember to be very consistent with it (3-4 times a day on the lips) and then the spots will come closer to the surface (which may be hard to notice, but that doesn't matter), then you can exfoliate gently. Keep at it for a week or so, and if you notice that atleast a couple spots are gone, you're on the right path.
I'm on day 10 and about 10 spots just peeled right off out of nowhere, and I haven't even exfoliated in the past 3 days, I've just been using the jojoba oil a few times a day.. this stuff is amazing.

It's funny, people have spent tons of money on laser surgery, or trying out all sorts of precription medication to fight this problem, all to no avail...If everyone simply applied jojoba oil this wouldn't be a problem for anybody.. not only does it work better than anything else, it's as safe as it gets and easily affordable.

I don't even need to wish anybody good luck when it comes to using Jojoba oil. If it's working for me (someone who has had them for a long time and has tried pretty much everything), it'll work for you.
