you're probably right, i just had a tonsillectomy and my adenoids removed and about 2 weeks after my surgery i started sneezing and a few days later i started smelling the smell when i sneeze, it smells like mucous, like when someone that has an upper respiratory infection coughs... so i'm sure i have some kind of infection in there now thanks to my ent.

its gross and i never realized other people could smell it too!

no ones mentioned it yet because i havent been around people during my recovery...

hopefully i can get this sorted out quick, i cant deal with it for the rest of my life it makes me naseous.

I have a strange smell come out when I sneeze as well, some sort of stale smell, not that nice. I also go through phases of having quite a lot of dried nasal mucus that smells wierd/bad as well. Anybody else with smelly dried nasal mucus?

This is not true...I never had any surgeries or had anything put in my throat by a doctor...but I still have those terrible smelling sneezes...

As mentioned in a post, dairy products might be a cause...I drink lots of milk and eat big amounts of cheese, butter, etc...

im pretty sure your sneeze smelling weird is caused by your spit.

sometimes when i sneeze and it smells weird its cause i know i need to brush my teeth

to test this hypothesis: Fake a sneeze by shooting air through your mouth like a sneeze would, its going to look silly, but if the result smells too then its cause by bad breath prolly.

think about it, bacteria all kinds of stuff thrives in your mouth no matter how much you think its pristine and clean. when u sneeze all that spit and contents get turned into a myst which floats through the air and lands on fabrics like little seeds.

just get some mouthwash of rinse out your mouth with water, or use altoids or other strong mentholated mints

I've suffered with PND (post nasal drip) when I'm laying down at night for my whole life and my allergies have only gotten worse in the last 5-10 years. I take Zyrtec twice a day.

When I sneeze, it smells salty and almost like aerosol. My wife has commented on this many times, and I smell it as well. The doctors have all said there's nothing wrong with me.

Lately, when I sneeze, it smells similar to when you have a respiratory infection, but aside from this, I'm perfectly healthy.

I have had the same problem, I started noticing it about 6 or so years ago. I also had my tonsils out and have bad allergies, which seems to be the general trend. And I'm not giving up milk products just for a funny smell!

I can't describe the smell, but it doesn't happen too frequently, maybe on about 10% of my sneezes. It also doesn't happen when I try to fake a sneeze, so I don't think it's just plain bad breath. But the smell is acidic, it reminds me of an acid I've used (I'm a chemist), almost like vinegar, but not exactly vinegar. It actually smells identical to this stuff they would spray on the grounds of my old college to keep the deer away. If anyone knows what they spray, please tell me, because then I can try to find the chemical and smell it and see if I'm right. I'm worried because I don't know if this means I have some undiagnosed issue (like diabetes or something serious).

My dad and I have the same problem, but we lean more toward a musty smell. I'm not sure if dairy products weigh in to our sneezes, I've had those sneezes on days when I didn't have cheese, milk, or anything. It comes and goes randomly, we stay pretty healthy, including oral hygiene, and don't catch many flus. But I've always been a common cold magnet and he occasionally gets sinus infections, so our sneezes are probably due to strictly sinus problems instead of mouth. Mine developed within the past few years, I haven't really had a lifestyle or diet change, so I just accept it as part of our genetics. =/

it is because you have gunk or know an bad breath on the back of ur toung so when you sneeze air travles out ur mouth so fast that it takes some of that bad breath with it just brush ur tounge really well until u spit some gray really sticky nasty stuff out and use listerine if you want and sneeze away there will be a little smell but not as bad cuz its not possible to get rid of every bad breath molecule

I found this thread because I have the same problem.

Want to know the really weird thing?

I think the sneezes are contagious.

My partner used to complain that his Dad's sneezes stank, and I thought he was just being weird, because everyone knows sneezes are odourless, right? Right? Wrong. A few years later, his sneezes started to smell. You can enter a room, and know whether or not he's sneezed recently. I found a plant the other day that smelt EXACTLY like it - a strong, pollen like aroma with a musky tone.

And now? Now my sneezes smell too :/ I guess if you inhale it, you carry whatever it is (spore? bacteria?) into your sinuses, and it finds a warm environment to grow. So to the guy that's worried its a sign of diabetes, don't fret.

It's so gross though. I have post nasal drip too, and sometimes when I cough up gunk I can *taste* that smell.

Someone find a cure! It's nasty :-(

Hi all,

Just found this thread and it seems to be full of speculation so I figured I'd present some facts about my own situation in hopes we can collectively figure something out.

My sneezes have smelled on and off for the last 10 years, but the period where they smell never lasts for more than a few weeks, then it goes away for very long periods. I have pretty bad allergies and this is the time of year (late August and Sept) where my ragweed reaction kicks into overdrive. The smelly sneezes just started again last week, so me there is a likely a link between what's going on in my sinuses, nose and throat and the sneezing.

A second theory I have: dehydration. My smelly sneezes usually happen in the morning, after 8-10 hours of not drinking water. The smell could be coming from inside, somewhere deeper like the stomach. I would try drinking lots of water for those having issues and see what happens after a day. Would love to know if this method works for anyone else.

Im 15 years old and its just over the last few weeks ive noticed my sneezes are beginning to smell weird?

if you lick the palm of your hand, then let it dry in, then smell your hand, thats the weird smell it leaves, but its an instant smell, dont have to let it dry in...is it something to do with saliva?

Mine is so bad my 3 year old cries or holds his breath depending on his mood. I hate it. It is only when I sneeze - I can have gum in my mouth or even just used mouthwash and it still smells like mothballs or something. I have never had any kind of mouth surgery though so I can't side one why or the other with that argument. Man I wish there was a cure, it is so nasty. Now I am all paranoid when I sneeze.

I'm sorry to hear that you've gone through that situation but I don't think anyone is going to judge you. I just feel bad that you're self-conscious about it. Thanks for posting on it

I too have some horribly wicked smelling sneezes that I want answers for. After reading all the previous posts, I don't feel alone anymore, thanks fellow nasty sneezers! The bad odor started maybe in my late teens (I'm 36 now). However, since I could remember, at least 5 years old or so, I would cough up these little whitish/yellowish soft retched smelling pieces, almost looked like a piece of the inside of corn. Now this wasn't routine through out the years, mainly when I was young, maybe 3-4 times a year I would cough these up. Well the past 5-7 years have been dreadful. If I'm not coughing them up I am being irritated by the feeling of them on my tonsils. They are known as Tonsil Stones. I fond this out a few years ago, on the internet, after my VA (Veterans Administration) doctor had no idea what I was talking about and just wanted to change the subject. I asked to have my tonsils removed, without hesitation the doctor said no. Without debate they shot me down. It's hard for me to complain about my taxpayer funded health care, but let it be known, government run health care really is not the answer.

I see others here describing similar situations. The only resolution for the Tonsil Stones is to have your tonsils removed. As mentioned earlier, I do think diets heavy in dairy contribute to our problems, but that's simply my opinion. I think these tonsil stones are the culprit for the odor after sneezing. And let me tell you, you cough up one of these Tonsil Stones, squeeze it (looks and feels like cauliflower) and the smell is one of THE most vile odors you have ever experienced.

Anyway, I too was here looking for answers, didn't find any but I thought I could share what I know, hope it helps.

I've been having this problem for years. About 10 years ago, I went to an ENT about it. He acted like it was completely weird and like he had never heard of such a thing before. He did a CAT scan of my head, put a scope up my nose, etc. He tried a few treatments, but nothing worked. Finally, he gave up, scratching his head. I've had the problem off and on ever since.

It seems to get worse in the fall, maybe. Also, I seem to notice it more after drinking coffee, but I'm not sure about that.

Lately, I've been doing a nasal rinse with an over-the-counter product called Alkalol. It's an old-time remedy that's supposed to create an alkaline environment in the nasal passages that makes an unhospitable environment for micro-organisms. It seems to help if I do it on a daily basis. You can buy it in the drug store and it has a pleasant menthol odor.

Anyway, I'm interested to find out that so many people are having the same problem. I'm amazed that my ENT didn't know anything about it!
