I, too, have only just come down with this affliction in the past month. I live with a housemate in a rented apartment, and I commented on how bad his sneezes smell. He tell sme his sneezes always smell bad. But lately I have noticed that my sneezes are also smelling bad. I'm worried that I may have picked up a bacterial or fungal infection from him. As far as I can remember, my sneezes never did smell at all.
I have had this smell since my mid-twenties. It is musty, not truly offensive, but not pleasant either. I thought I was the only one who could smell it until I sneezed the car and my girlfriend asked what it was.
I have never had my tonsils removed.
I do not have bad allergies.
I do eat very much dairy.
I am unsure how pervasive the smell is after I sneeze. I am sure most people are either too polite to say anything, or maybe they are unsure of what is causing the smell.

AHAHAHAA! I am not ALONE!
I am 29, quit smoking over 5 years ago.
Some time after, I started noticing that if I coughed, or sneezed, that I tasted/smelled this odd (not really foul, just odd) taste/smell. I got all paranoid thinking that I have lung cancer or something, and I was "smelling" the lung cancer.
Now, 5 years later, I Sneezed, and SMELLED IT! Lol. I am so confused. I DO have problems with post nasal drip, I get nosebleeds all the time, and my sense of smell is HORRIBLE.
I dunno, it sounds like I am probably fine, it's just so funny to me that virtually every person that has posted in this thread is as mystified as I am.

I can't offer any solutions. I can only share my experiences. When I launch into a powerful sneeze, the resulting smell is like mildew. Picture a dirty shower curtain. Now, who would want that scenario festering in their head? My wife does NOT smell it however. But then again, she doesn't smell it when I fart either. So I'm left here picturing my sinuses infested with mold and fungus. This cannot be good!
My husband had the same problem when we first started dating ... over the years i started noticing my sneezes smelled the same. So I knew whatever it was I got it from him. Well about a year ago we both went to the dentist and found out that we both had periodontal disease (im not sure about the spelling). We both had to get our gums cleaned really well. And the smell has been gone ever since ... but the dentist told us that we have to keep going back for regular cleanings or it will come back. They didn't say that the smell was linked to the disease or anything ... its just an observation that I noticed after we got the cleanings done. Hope that helps.
:-D This is so weird. I was telling people about how after sneezing I got a whiff of lilies or musky sweetness. This doesn't happen all the time and I wonder why I was having this experience. They had no idea of anyone ever experiencing this so I said I would search the internet and lo and behold here you all are. As the smell is not unpleasant I am not worried. Should I be?
I have too as well as my son and dad smells like a dead rat.
I have had these strange smelling sneezes for some years!
Best way to describe it is like oil seed rape pollen!
I have never had mouth or throat surgery,so it cant be linked with that!
Im physically and medically fit apart from this!
But Im pleased that im not the ONLY one that suffers!

Only started noticing these sneezes within the last couple of months. Don't know where the foul-smelling sneezes came from. No allergies or symptoms of any sort of infection. Caught me completely off guard.
I would definitely describe the sneezes as musty -- like a damp attic.
The only habitual thing that I've changed over the last couple of weeks (and I'm meticulous about my daily routine) is that I began to use matches instead of lighters when smoking weed. Just thought that I would throw that out there in case it helps anyone else.
Then again...could of been the weather change, less stress, or some other incalculable external factor.

I believe what you are all experiencing is caused by TONSILLOLITHS. These are foul smelling lumps of mucous, bacteria, dead cells and so on that become lodged in the tonsils. Since the tonsils are pitted and have narrow crypts in the surface, they offer the "perfect" breeding ground for these awful little lumps of stench!!
When one sneezes, it may force one of the tonsilliliths (tonsil stones) out of its hiding place. You may or may not notice it coming out, but you sure will notice the smell. You may not even "shoot one out", as it were....the mere force of the sneeze rushing past the stone can be enough to pick up the smell and emit it along with the sneeze.
To test if you have these stones, you can run your finger gently over the surface of the tonsil and apply some pressure...you may even be able to extract/pop out the stone. If you can't - smell your finger tip anyway....!! Yuck!! The stones themselves vary in size, but are usually fairy small pea sized, are an off-white/yellowish colour and can vary from rock-hard to softish. They are usually a little lumpy, and if you squueze them and break them open the smell is absolutely disgusting!
Unfortunately, these little pests can also be the cause of bad breath. They can be removed with gentle manipulation but the only 100% way to cure them entirely is having the tonsils removed.

I have this same problem. I have had it ever since I developed seasonal allergies. I have something that works for me, maybe you guys can try it. I discovered it by accident- I also have a eustacian tube that drains poorly, I get fluid buildup in my left ear when I am sick, i have had my ear drums burst on a plane, etc. I was searching for answers there and found a suggestion to try a neti pot. You can get it at cvs- you basically pour water w/ some baking soda in it into your nostril, tilting your head and then it pours out your other nostril. The water goes into your nasal cavity a bit, you see mucus running out, etc. It feels weird at first, and the first few times water will randomly pour out of your nose a couple times after your do it, but WOW! No more allergies, and no more stinky sneezes. And, it helped my eustacian tube issue because i think clearing out the allergens made it less inflamed. Maybe that's not the reason, but now I can get on a plane without wondering whether my ear will feel like i am being stabbed with a knife! I had my adnoids out as a kid, still have my tonsils, so I don't know about that theory. All I know is that I no longer have to take zyrtec or claritin every day. I use the neti pot, and for the next 3-5 days I wake up with no congestion even in the middle of the pollen season. And no stinky sneezes. I thought you guys might want to try it.
History
The odour is also known as the 'shahaan sternutation'...it was discovered in the 19th century by a Philosopher known formally as Daanish Butt.
Shahaan Hussain was actually the man that expelled the sneeze, hence where it get its famous name from; 'shahaan sternutation'.
The smell
It is a smell we have been acquainted with for generations. It smells like Rape fields and Saliva, and inhabits within most human beings. It is a natural smell that occurs when someone sneezes heavily. A scientific report suggested that allergic reactions are bound to cause the sternutation. However, there is nothing wrong with the smell and it is completely natural..infact, in some cases it feels warm and exhilarating.
If you have any queries, do not hesitate to ask me any questions. Thank you :D

It's just caused by a build up of bacteria, it's completely natural just our body stops it from entering anything vital, so it gets stuck with our mucus. However, it can smell worse when you're sick about it. You can't really go anything about it unless you use nasal sprays or snort salt water a certain way to clear your nasal passages.
PS. Snorting water is scary! I'd stick with nasal sprays, they work really well. :-)
Cheers

The cause of Pulmaninges (a smelly sneeze) is caused by several things. Irritation of the lungs, throat, and mouth. Also watch your oral intake. Example foods with a very high amount of acid can cause Pulmaninges (a smelly sneeze). Soda, candy, and so on will cause this. Pulmaninges can also be cured by seeing your doctor and asking about Pulmaninges. your doctor should put you on a small dose of antibiotics.
ME TOO EVERYONE!!! my friends dont believe me but it is soo wild. I am going to see a doctor, i am scared!:-(
