I just went to a dermatologist with the same thing and he said it was acne keloidalis nuchae and that it is common in people of color.
I've had the same exact thing for about a year now and the outbreaks of acne, bumps, itching, redness quickly became horrendous. I also cut my hair once a week myself and the outbreaks are worse the very next day. The one dermatologist said stop cutting my hair short and I thought that was the dumbest help and advise I've heard so far.... I honestly think he had no clue what to do.... but the next dermatologist was a little more helpful.
Both m****s said it should gone with the help of some prescriptions of creams and pills. I've taken two different doxycycline pills (which by the way will make you super nauseated and throw them up if you don't eat something before taking them), triamcinolone acetonide cream (type of steroid cream), a couple different high percentage benzoyl scalp rinses and creams. All of these prescription meds did nothing. I eat healthy and I'm in great shape. There are a million different things that you can do and hope they help out a little bit but you really need to find the big cure to get the job done. That's why I'm on here reading this because I'm desperately looking for answers.
It's funny how I saw someone who wasn't even close to a dermatologist and he was able to diagnose it as keloidalis nuchae and the dermatologists said it's just regular acne and will go away in a few months.... Anyway hope that's what it is because I'm seeing one last derma but this time I'll tell them what it is and what I want to do to fix it.
I just made the last comment and then I decided to read up on it on google and pretty sure I know more than the dermatologists I saw. Best solution I read was growing your hair out!!! You have to grow the hair out for weeks to that the ingrown hair can fall out on its own. If you always keep your hair trimmed up neat, then your only adding to the problem. I was in the military and could never grow my hair. I have been cutting my hair myself for about 8 years now and once a week so my hair never really had a chance to grow. So here I go and I'm starting this test now. I plan to do this for about 8 weeks. Not sure what stage mine is at but I'm hoping it early enough so I don't need extensive medical care...
Solutions without surgery if caught early enough:
- Grow hair out for 2 to 3 months, use moisturizing conditioners/shampoos to prevent dry skin, be careful of what you are wearing on the area that is damaged. I realized that the ingrown hairs are everywhere that I had my helmet pads placed and down my jaw line to my chin which is where my chin strap was for my helmet. I noticed that these areas are the worst.
Hope this helps!!
I had a similiar problem with them at the back of my head. It took a while but I finally found out what was causing them. DO NOT DRINK ENERGY DRINKS for two weeks and see if that solves the problem. I traced my problem back to them when I went from coffee to the energy drinks. When I stopped drinking the "Monster" Energy drink my problems went away within 2 weeks and never came back. Every once and a while I would try to drink the energy drink just to see if they would reappear and immeadeatly the problem came back. I'm not saying this is what is causing your issues, but staying away from the Energy drink most definetly solved mine. Good Luck, because I know how irritating and painful they can be. Let me know how it goes for you.
Hello Stez63. I know exactly what you are going through. I am a 51 year old African American male and have been fighting this type of situation on the back of my head just about the neckline for the last 20 years. I went to a dermatologists about 20 years ago and again about 10 years ago and all they did was spray liquid hydrogen on the area to freeze it and then stick a 27mm needle into the affected areas to inject cortisone. This procedure would hurt like holy hell but I would grit my teeth and bear with the painful sticks of the needle. The bad part about it is that it would only work for about a week and the condition would come right back. I have not been back to a dermatologist since and I have tried every scar ointment and cream known to man. All the these to is improve it a little bit and then just keep the areas from getting worse. Nothing has ever removed this situation completely. Good luck in your search in finding a remedy for this.
Hi stez63,
Can you please update us on whether you ever found a solution to this problem? Thanks.
G'day mate. Great detailed description. I had this problem for years too and it had all the doctors stumped. I have beaten it by about 90%. Keep your finger nails really clean. If you scratch your scalp just a little each night when you sleep you introduce bacteria to your scalp from your finger nails (due to very short hair). Maintaining clean clippers is essential too. Brush an antibacterial lube/wash on and into your clippers after every other use or so. This can be found at the clipper shop. Vigorously wash wash your scalp with anti-bacterial soap straight after each time you clipper your hair. This comes in a soap bar form and can be found at good Pharmacies.I will try your rubbing alcohol remedy to defeat the last 10% of incidences I still get - It'll be cheaper and better than the after shave I've been using. Moisturising your scalp feels nice but makes a nice environment for bacteria to grow so avoid that. Good luck, mate
