Is it possible to have a herpes break out on your thigh or nose? What type would this be? It's not genital and it's not oral, so what else is there? I can feel it coming days before the rash/blisters show on the skin. If I catch it in time, I can usually get OTC topical such as Abreeva that minimizes the pain and discomfort. Any ideas in what else it could be? My Dr says it could be Shingles, Impentago (sp?), Staff infection or herpes. I need some advise... Are there any sure fire ways to tell the difference between any of these suggestions? 8-|

if it is a herpes outbreak, you can have an actual sore cultured to see if it is herpes and also if it is oral or genital herpes. you can have an oral (hsv 1) or genital (hsv 2) lesion anywhere on your body if transmitted from an oral or genital sore to another area of the body. so if you actually have oral or genital herpes or are around someone or something (i.e. towel) exposed to it, that comes into contact with any area on your body, you can get a sore in that area but it is highly unlikely to continuously have outbreaks there unless repeated exposure occurs.
in addition to this, the nose is also a highly common place for someone with oral herpes to have outbreaks.
furthermore, this is just one of the many reasons why it is very important to wash hands very often, especially if you have or are often exposed to the herpes virus.

I contracted herpes 16 years ago. I first got a rash on my inner thigh. I get the outbreak about 5 times a year. The symptoms seem to be getting worse as I age. On my most recent outbreak I was in bed for an entire day with severe muscle weakness and fatigue. The rash on my leg did not ever blister. I felt flu-like symptoms as well. The doctors seem to be perplexed by the severity of my illness. One doctor said it was shingles and another said that the test showed I never have had shingles.
I can really tell if I start taking a new medication or if I am in allergy season. This is when I feel the worst. My whole body shuts down. My digestive system stops working, and I feel constipated. I am tired and have muscle and joint pain. I don't know what to do. I am hesitant to take the antiviral because I don't want to be on medication everyday.

Yes, you definately get herpes on other parts of your body. I have had outbreaks on my left shoulder for 20 years now. I get the outbreak about twice a year. I can feel the outbreak coming on by first itching, then blisters. I went to the doctor, and they said just what I expected, it was herpes. I don't have genital herpes either. I don't know how I contracted it on my shoulder. Be very careful not to scratch these blisters as they could spread to a larger sore or to other areas of your body. I keep mine covered with a bandage, and try not to scratch. :-(

Yes, you can get herpes on other parts of the body, but it is NOT genital herpes (the HSV-2 strand). It is possibly herpes zoster (shingles) which can be present on other parts of the body.

A staff infection is usually very red and sore to the touch.

Herpes you will feel tingling, itching, even pain before any bumps come up. They will eventually ooze and scab over in about a week or two. Although they do not always form blisters and scab.

Impetigo usually effects children. It's similar in appearance to herpes, but usually effects the mouth, nose, hands, and forearms.

And there is a surefire way... a TEST from your doctor. Your doctor can take a culture or blood and find out what it is. Be persistent and ask them to do it.

It will be okay, don't worry. Any of those are manageable.

I am a doctor, and the person who said you can not get herpes type 2 on other parts of the body is incorrect
you can get type I and type II anywhere the virus infects (but is usually genital since mucous membranes are more porous)
it can definitely occur on the eyes and can be very dangerous if it gets in the eye
please see a doctor if you think this may be the case

I have had occasional lip herpes (always in the same place) since I was a child. Recently I had a group of blisters on my thigh looking like herpes blisters and which lasted for several weeks. A few days later I had an eruption on my lip. We were away from home so I was unable to go to the doctor although I have described it to him and he thinks it may have been shingles. To confuse matters I felt a stabbing pain in the area where the rash developed during a picnic and wonder if there are any insect bites which resemble this? I have never had a herpes break out before except when ill or run down. Since all this I have had a flair up of my rheumatoid arthritis and feel very run down. Any suggestions?

I've had herpes simplex 2 since May of last year... I've had 2 major breakouts since i contracted it. As irresponsible as it was... i decided not to take anything. 9 months went by i still had no outbreaks. A few weeks ago i had a blister on my thigh i didnt know what it was an eventually it popped and scabbed over.. i started taking the medication i was taking before but only after getting a few more outbreaks on my thighs and realizing what they were. I was looking at my sons legs... he had some tiny blisters. Now i'm worried that he could have possibly contracted the virus from sitting on my lap. I hope this isn't correct. What should I do?????

Herpes blisters can errupt on other parts of your body. I get an outbreak on my thigh 2 times a year. I find that L-lysine supplements help, and the health food store sells an L-lysine cream for cold sores. This helps clear up the infection really fast and naturally. It works very well for me.

I was having horrible outbreaks for years on end. It seemed as though I was always broken out. It is amazing that the doctors are always so baffled at the extreme symptoms people have. Anyway - I've been taking L-Lysine everyday 6000 mg per day total...each pill is 1000 MG. It seems to have almost completely stopped my outbreaks. I also stopped eating food with Arginine in it. As great as it has been I now have about 4 little bubbly bumps on my thigh were my leg connects to my butt. It's very red but really doesn't itch. I've never had this. I'm wondering if my body is finding some other outlet for the virus??? I do recommend the L-Lysine though. I know they are monster pills but it sure beats a breakout!!!
