I had a complete hysterectomy years ago. Took birth control pills for years to help with hot flashes and other mood problems. After about 3 years went off meds. I find a fan in the bedroom and ac on about 68 helps with the hot flashes. Summer is not a friend to me. Can't stay out in the heat for long. Winter is great time for me as I have very few hot flashes unless someone at the office turns up the heat then here comes the hot flashes. I am 55 now and starting to have other problems like leg cramps and joint pain. Haven't found anything to help with this. I wish everyone luck and if you are married invest in long johns for your spouse and turn down the ac lol. The mood changes only last for a few years but the hot flashes seems to be for the rest of your life. Learn to laugh about it and keep on trucking. Keep your bedroom cold to help with your sleep and tell your hubby to stay on his side of the bed :-D. Don't let any doctor tell you it is in your head. It is very real but you can manage it with just a few changes in your life style. In summer cook outside more and in the winter leave the back door open to cool down the kitchen. If someone in the house says anything dig out the socks with toes in them out of the draw and give it to them :-S

I am one month out from a complete hysterectomy due primarily to a bowling ball sized fibroid tumor which was not cancerous - "Thank You God" - with a little endometriosis as well. I had some minor hot flashes before my surgery over the last few years but they greatly increased after my surgery while still in the hospital. I ask my doctor who is a gynecological oncologist, how long the hot flashes and night sweats would last and his reply was, "there is no answer for that". After a couple of 4:00am showers after a hot flash and waking up soaking wet (Can we say "disgusting"?), I have found that using one less blanket at night helps prevent such extreme night sweats. HTR is not an option as I am simply not taking the chance of cancer as I would prefer to be here to raise my five year old myself, so I am planning to try some of the following which I've found while researching this issue . . .

1. Twenty minutes or more a day of cardiovascular exercise.
2. Herbal remedies such as black cohosh.
3. Soy supplements and products.
4. B vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium and potassium.
5. Lower the intake of caffeine, spicy foods and alcohol.

I had a total hysterectomy 8 weeks ago. I have been having hot flashes since, crying spells (I"m not a cry baby) similar to the day before my period. I love that I have no pain now though.

I am seeing a woman who does balancing hormones using bio-identical hormones. I don't know how that's going to work, but I have had success before when they gave me deeprovera and it caused hot flashes. I took progesterone (bio-identical cream) and it made it better.

You need to have a saliva test to have accurate hormone levels and keep checking until you are balanced. Wish me luck!

I wish I'd told the doc to leave my ovaries, I was feeling very balanced, calm and in control. Now it's like mega PMS! I was tired though due to all the pain meds to fix the pain. NEVER have an abulation, this is what got me into this to begin with, my uterus was terribly scarred and giving me aweful pain. My tubes were filled with fluid (due to laproscopies for endometriosis? and other messing around removing cysts etc?). Next life I come back as a man. :-)

I am 4 yrs out of a hysterectomy. I did take the low dose HRT for the first year, but with the female problems in my family I opted to quit taking them. The hot flash and night sweats were unbearable. I began taking the day/night black cohosh therapy supplements. I found it only worked for the first 6 mo or so, then I must have become immune. I changed brands, and that seemed to help a bit. I did notiice that during the worst hotflash weeks, i would lose handfuls of hair after I washed it, when I was combing it out. When I am "flash free" I keep my locks. For the past year and half I quit taking anything, and decided to endure the agony. It was awful for about 7 months, then they just stopped. I was thrilled. Thought maybe I would be normal again. Well, the little demon is back, and about once an hour I have a sweating episode. My hair is back to handfuls again. The heater I try an keep off. It is on again, off again with the sweaters! As a matter of fact, I am having one right now. Cheeks hot, warmth surging starting from the middle and spreading to my face, hands, legs, feet. Forehead wet! Being a woman is awful these times. Just realize that we are not alone, and there really is not anything you can do to make them stop. Whether artificial hormones, natural replacements, or whatever, they are always lurking. The side affects of the HRT for some women is not worth the suffering. Hang in there girls! %-)

After trying many over the counter things for my horrible hot flashes and night sweats (had partial hysterectomy 10 years ago) - I finally found that black cohosh actually worked! within 2 days - I could just feel the "edge" of them once in a while. My dr. said i should go on estrogen - because the benefits far outweigh the risks - and guess what??? hot flashes again. they gave me a shot today to see if that will alleviate the symptoms. i'm not sure whether i want to get a shot every 3 weeks. or go back on the black cohosh. they tell me there are other options: patches, sprays, etc. not sure what to do.

I am so happy to hear that other women that have had a total hysterectomy still have hot flashes. I had my surgery done about 9 yrs ago. I do agree that stress and certain food and drinks can cause them. I have been lucky, I don't get the night sweats where Ihave to change sheets, I just get really hot and have to cool down.. It sometimes drives my husband nuts. Is there an end in sight?

Shot helped more than pills - but the nausea the first 2 weeks were horrible!
BUT do i really want to get a shot every 3 weeks!!!??
My mother is still on premarin - so if I'm like my mom -- do I want to be doing this for the next 20 years or longer?
I hear some women only get this for a few years. That must be awesome
But I remember very well my grandmother saying you never get over them, you just get use to them.
Must run in the family, I'm guessing.
So... do I go back on the black cohash? They tell me there are options - sprays and patches.
But will I get this horrible nausea - like morning sickness for several weeks to a month - trying each one??

Hi I had my full hyster in Nov 2009. My joints were killing me so I desided to go off the hormone replacement. My joints no longer hurt like they were, but now the hotflashes are out of control. Every ten to fifteen minutes I feel as if I have something crawling all over me then the sweats hit. Night time I literely soak the bed and I wake three to four times at night. I just started takeing Black Cohosh. It seems to releave it some. Ive been on it for two days and only had one mild out break. I stubbled across this site seeking help.

Helenia,

I had them really bad like that too. When they hit there is no concentrating on anything. Just waiting for it to get over!!

give the black cohash some time to get into your system and make sure you are taking the right one. I would have taken the wrong one if I hadn't asked at the health store. One is a whole lot stronger. Make sure to drink plenty of water too. I think u have to take it several times a day - make sure to ask. It really did work for me.

My dr. convinced me I needed the hormones to strengthen my bones, etc. and that I needed to start on it soon. It's imp. not to wait too long.

You probably wouldn't be able to take this - it has hormones, but my dr. recently started me on Evamist. I love it! you spritz it on your arm once a day and done! I still have some "warm" flashes in the evening and wake up some at night - but so much better than it was that I'm not complaining.

Hi Ladies, I also had a total hysterectomy (Endometriosis).  It has been 10 years.  I was on Cenestin (Estrogen) for 9 years and once I got regulated, I never had a hot flash.  I lost my job and insurance and couldn't get my prescription refilled, so I started using Life Flo Progesta Care Complete creme. It has been great, except now I am getting hot flashes.  I have been taking vitamin E.  400 mgs in the morning and 800 mgs an hour before bed.  I have actually been sleeping through the night, and the daytime flashes have been minimal.  I hope this helps someone.

My older sister, had a total hysterectomy (Endo) about 20 years ago.  She told me about the Life Flow and the vitamin E and she swears by it. She has never taken any prescribed meds for hormone replacement.  You can find the Life Flo online or at Health Food stores.
