I gained 20 pounds on Gabapentin in the first six months I was on so my specialist switched me to Topamax, which I have been on for 4 years. I Dropped back to my normal weight, but found it not nearly effective for pain relief as the Gabapentin was. Recent literature indicates a low incidence of weight gain with Gabapentin; perhaps the result of drowsiness or water retention. Information is so conflicting. Experience seems to contradict the studies. I have decided pain relief trumps weight concerns, and will be back on the Gabapentin soon. I will require time off work as it messes with my brain at first (word selection, writing skills, organization and congnative ability). The side effects resolve completely within a month or so.
Amen. And some just want to check whether others have experienced similar symptoms. Everyone knows to see a doctor for serious medical concerns. Before that, people sometimes choose to check with others who have actual experience with something to help inform their choice whether to see a doctor (especially if they can't afford one, can't access one, or even simply choose not to see one, because that is also their right).

Cymbalta also causes s weight gain. I've gained so much weight on gabbapentin, and the dosage was just upped to 300mgs 3x a day. I lost weight on Cymbalta as it just made me not want to eat & it made me feel like a Zombie. I really wish they could find something that took away the pain w/o weight gain. dammit!
Thank you for sharing your experience. I am loosing weight too. I actualy looked up for gabapentin and weight loss and came accros to opposite comments. I am a banker, I cannot get high at anytime, I need my brains. Only peoblem with Gabapentin is short term memory loss. I am taking notes of my conversations with my customers. I am hopping it will help. So I will look up and remember. I have crps and using 1200 for now. I will go up to 1800. It seems like working for me. I’ve lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks. We will see if it was stress or Gabapentin soon.
I have been on I Gabepentin Lyrica,Cymbalta and Topomax they all have side effects but Lyrica and Cymbalta were the worst for me.Weight gain was a huge problem.I have been taking Topomax and Gabepentin for a while but I am just going to try the Topomax alone

I have been taking 600 mgs a day since 8/2017. In the 10 months I have gained 50 lbs since taking the med.
For GET IT! You cannot lose weight while taking Gabapentin. I just paid $185.00 and after 1 week on (TV Advertised Diet - they send the food) and lost no weight, not a pound. I have never had trouble losing weight when I put any effort in to it at all. Since I started taking it two years ago I have ballooned from 123 to 142 lbs. And I have fought it all of the way. This extra weight has caused me to have even more pain in my back, knees and hips due to serious arthritis. I am going to have to quit taking the gabapentin, even though it will cause me an unbelievable amount of nerve pain (that it has in fact helped with), because I am getting so depressed, in addition to more joint pain. Please tell me that this weight is going to come come more easily after it is out of my system. Does anyone out there know?
